The Secret Service is investigating after an effigy of President Barack Obama with a rope around his neck was hung in Plains, Georgia, in front of a sign honoring the town as the home of President Carter.

Hard to pinpoint whether or not racism plays a factor, here. It is in Georgia, after all, and knowing their history of race-relations, well, makes me wonder. So does the fact that this black president has had more death threats already than any other president in history.

Knowing these facts yet still immediately brushing off incidences like these as non-racist; well, that makes me wonder, too.

I don't think its a stretch considering regarding race either. In our county in NC there were MANY such lynching's and subsequently setting the body on fire all black people. Of course this happened 50 years ago, but could easily happen again given the mindset of the locals.

Whether something is racist or not can be in the eye of the beholder, in Obama's case it is even harder to judge since the POTUS, is always subject to both praise and ridicule. Of course any image of a black man hanging in the deep South is going to be racist because of the historical connotation. Exactly the same way as a Nazi graffiti on a synagogue is taken to be antisemitic.
Whether racist or not is this not ultimately free speech under the 1st Amendment, especially since it does deal with the president?
Personally I'm more concerned that the secret service is investigating the act rather than the act itself.

My first thought was that it was just plain wrong. I probably would have thought it was race related a couple of years ago. But Palin, McCain, and Bush effigys were hung all over the nation by Obama supporters during the election. And those effigys were actually defended as "free expression" by the same people who are denouncing it when it's done to a guy with a little darker skin. The bottom line is that there are racists and race baiters on both sides. For every so called "Klansman" out there, there are 100 deciples of Farakhan and Sharpton who's livlihoods depend on racial tensions existing. Personally, I don't agree with the apparent message being sent. But, I do think that they should have the right to send it.

Since people are missing it, I highlighted the part which leads some to conclude there was an element of racism here.

If you click the link, it doesn't even look like Obama. It's a black stick-figure-ish form with an Obama sign pinned to it. I wouldn't even really call it an effigy.

Considering the location of the hanged doll, by the Carter sign, surrounded by American flags, the political implications are hard to miss. (Unless you are really intent on missing them, then apparently it's easy.)

All the people I know who don't like him (including my mega melanin friends) feel that way because he came outta nowhere, has socialist politics and viewpoints and keeps apologizing for past comments and kissing ass to his global peers.

A lot of the dislike for this president comes from his politics and background; not from his race.

I've never seen Condi Rice or Colin Powell strung up in effigy. When Sarah Palin was hung in effigy was it considered racist? Nope.

I know it is. That doesn't mean that everything is race related. Hanging politicians or controversial figures in effigy has been going on for centuries. That one of them happens to be black doesn't automatically make it a race issue.
