Only Failed Detonator Saved Detroit Flight

Officials now say tragedy was only averted on Northwest flight 253 because a makeshift detonator failed to work properly. Bomb experts say there was more than enough explosive to bring down the Northwest jet, which had nearly 300 people aboard, had the detonator not failed.

Come on, Nanc. You can do better than that. Have you really met anyone who points out that maybe Muslims have a reason to be upset, or who asserts that not all Muslims are terrorists, and who asserts that the attacks of 9/11 were not terrorist acts? If so, please point your finger only at those few people. I know a lot of activists, and a lot of people who believe that Muslims are not all of a single stripe, and not one of them has asserted what you appear to be playing on. (I do know a few people who believe that 9/11 was not the doings of foreign terrorists, but that's independent of any feelings about Muslims.)

There are a LOT of unanswered questions about this incident. Was this an unsuccessful bombing, like the attempted "shoe bombing"? Was the device actually more powerful than the explosion that actually happened (which was described as like a "balloon popping"?)

Or, was this just a completely inept incident, by someone with al-Qaida sympathies but no actual affiliation? Was the bomb in actuality a little one, like a cherry bomb or very large firecracker?

If this was al-Qaida, it was their most inept operation ever.

Something about this is confusing me...read a story here that had a bit of detail:

These are the parts, taken as a whole, I dont get. Can anyone explain? Other than it's retarded.

1. It is understood that the suspect had been on an intelligence database of suspected extremists in the United States, but he was not on the "no-fly list", meaning he was known to the authorities but not considered high risk.

2. Abdulmutallab had flown on a KLM flight from Lagos to Schiphol airport, Amsterdam, before boarding the flight to the US. The suspect had been granted a visa to travel to the US in June 2008 valid until June 2010 after claiming that he planned to attend a religious ceremony.

Not sure which is worse, if the airline knew he was on the list of suspected extreemists and did nothing, or they dont have access to information one would expect they'd have access to.

My biggest issue with this is the ability of this guy, who, regardless of being on that list, was able to get a 2 year visa to attend a "religious event"?

I'm ignorant of most religions (especially my own), but the only religious event I can think of that would take multiple years is a jihad (or another religions equivalent to "kill em all, let god sort em out" type activities).

Could it be possible that the government and media are jumping to an embarrassing conclusion, along with potential racial profiling here? I am an electrical engineer by profession for over 30 years, and the description of the explosion sounds just like a faulty battery on a personal electronic device (PED). If the plane was just starting it's descent, it could be he was stowing his device at the time of the explosion (turning it on/off, cabin pressure fluctuations, etc.), a more likely time for the battery to explode if it were faulty. These PED battery explosions are typically "small" and limited in area, consistent with the reported events.

I ask for them. I don't trust anyone other than myself to get those emergency exit doors open in case of a disaster. If you don't want to sit there, tell a flight attendant that you are not comfortable operating the emergency exit doors. They are required by law to move you .

Terrorist attacks by organized groups in the US is exceedingly rare. Ever since 9/11, the feds have brought the heat on actual terror organizations. While groups of people have a tendency to leave a trail and raise red flags, it's harder to guard against a lone, determined lunatic. The lone individual is the sort that everyone looks at in the aftermath and thinks, "yeah, it was coming." They are undone by friends, family, or their own amateurism, not government dragnets or drone strikes.

You shouldn't confuse the terrifying acts of these sorts of people with genuine terrorism, which is a tool employed by groups of people with political agendas.

It's easy to get that seat. My company makes my travel arrangements and I go online right after they do and choose my seat. I get the exit row 95% of the time.

Not only do I distrust everyone else when it comes to operating the emergency exit, I am 6'4" and the extra leg room is nice.

I can do that too, but could this guy pick his own seat from Nigeria? If so he should have gone first class and used the shitter behind the cockpit to increase the chances of his weak bomb actually damaging something.

I think that is the big question. Unless he's capable of manufacturing his own PETN he obviously had help. Obviously had had some kind of agenda or he wouldn't have done it.

Israel has it right. Show up 3-4 hours before the flight. Sit in a room and sweat it out while they watch the whole group of passengers. If they don't like how you look or act, they pull you for full search. They can simply say "sorry you look too dark/ Muslim/ skinhead/ crazy/ smelly/ insane/ sketchy/ toussled/ terroristic for this flight. Sorry you're not flying today". End of story.

See how many hippies need to die in explosions before the ACLU is calling for full body cavity searches of the darkies at the gates. My guess is 3.

She did? What system was she talking about? They have a system for random passengers to take action on their own? Who would have thought, I was just being sarcastic.

The Dutch system didn't work. They said that secondary screening (wipe test) would have picked up the explosive, which is probably true.

They also said they do secondary screening on passengers from Nigeria, but there is no evidence that they did.
