Teens Hold 'Kick a Jew Day' in Florida

Ten middle school students in Naples, Florida, were suspended last week after district officials said they participated in "kick a Jew day." "I haven't seen anything like it in my 17 years in Naples. No child deserves this kind of treatment," said Rabbi James Perman of the incident at North Naples Middle School Thursday.

There's an undercurrent of racism underlying the tone of criticism directed toward the President, as well as Muslims and Middle Easterners which is being defended as free speech and given a sheen of acceptability and even intellectualism.

This is exacerbated by the impotence felt by the general poulation faced firstly with economic uncertainty, and secondly with thier superiority as Americans shaken by not being able to beat the Taliban/Al Queda compounded by Americas apparent inablity to unilaterally control nations as they did in the past. What's left is to lash out at minorities on a minor scale.

It happened in Germany, but it also happened before and occurs all the time now too. When kids act out like this, it's a telling sign of what's happening at home. The students just haven't learned the art of subtle racism: say you're doing it because they did it to you (see the comments under the Michelle Obama Monkey story).

When the second dip on the way to economic recovery takes place I expect to see more of this.

This is sort of an echo of Spud's post, but from what I know of Naples, it's not the safest place to have "Kick a Jew Day", as Jews may very well make up the majority in Naples. It'd be like having "Kick a Polock Day" in Chicago, or "Kick a Mick Day" in Boston.

For those who ever ask why these things happen, there are these explanations that are bourne out over and over again by history. Nazis happened, but are not the be all and end all of racism and cultural hate. In fact, the events surrounding the rise of the Nazi party are often misused to spur hate as seen in the teabagger movement, which is why I chose to avoid the antagonism. You obviously do not see the point. There have been multiple genocides since the Nazis took thier turn, and there were multiple before.

There was a similiar story a few years ago about a "Slap a Jew Day" where the kids were really just high-fiving or slapping Jewish kids on the back and it was blow completely out of proportion. This one sounds pretty bad but I wouldn't be surprised if there were more to the story. When I was in High School I had jewish friends and we often played sports or drinking games that were "jews vs. gentiles" and it was always the jewish kids' idea.
