but in every job you have at least 5% of people who are absolutely horrible, and they ruin the reputation for 95% of other people, unfortunately.

Misleading oversimplification. The worst of the worst are in the 5%, then there is a whole lot of degrees of bad till you get to the top 5% who are the most awesome cops ever.
Sometimes a disproportionate number of the lower half of bad cops end up in one big pile, and bad things happen. Further sometimes there is legitimate stress going on.
Cops are people too, and my problem with cops is they are given a bit too much preference. They have to get in people's face everyday and I'm willing to cut them some slack there. But the job they do is an extremely important one to let so many fucks up do the job. But lets face it, most of us don't grow up being urged to be cops. In fact quit the opposite.
What you end up with is counties looking to pay anybody that can meet the basic fitness and mental reqs. high-school education only, give them a badge, gun, and a decent salary. For most cops this was not their desired profession, but what was available to them that payed decent. For many its just a job, not a "calling".
The true few are the ones that signed up because they were sincere about helping they're community and don't care what it payed. But its like I said, lots of shades of grey in between the worst and the best. Based on my own experience I'd call it 50/50. That 5% that end up on the news, most of them eventually get cut loose free as a bird by the DA's.
