Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

A reputed Mexican drug lord with a $5 million reward on his head has been named to Forbes magazine's list of the most powerful people in the world. Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, who authorities say heads the powerful Sinaloa Cartel, is believed to have shipped $6 billion to $19 billion in cocaine to the United States over the past eight years, Forbes says in the listing. The magazine ranks him No. 41, ahead of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev (No. 43), Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (46), French President Nicolas Sarkozy (56) and Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez (67).

Legalize weed and half the Mexicans in Cali will make the list.

Legalize. The coke too. Tax the fuck out of it. We need the money.

People manufacturing nuclear weapons are legitimate possibilities for Forbes list, people who outsource millions of jobs are on the list, people who make billions from the Iraq war are on the list, drug lords are no better and no worse than some of the other scum bags on that list. They are probably not even responsible for more deaths than some of the "legitimate" folks on the list.

While I generally agree that drugs should be legalized, it's silly to think that budgetary woes would be solved by doing so. The federal government spends over 3 Trillion dollars every single year and cannot make ends meet. Does anyone think for a second that the revenue from a marijuana tax wouldn't be spent on new programs? Every time Congress gets more money, they spend more money. Even if a measure was passed where these funds went only to the deficit, it'd be repealed in no time.

Joe, don't you believe this headline?

I don't either.

You're probably right about that. But you can't just think about the money we could collect from taxes. Just think about all the money we would STOP spending on enforcement of ludicrous drug laws.

This has gotta bum Karsick out.

He's a criminal. He shouldn't be noted for being anything other than that.

Nothing wrong with Mexicans getting rich in the U.S., Lee. It's the American dream. Legalize weed and the serious cultivators (of any ethnicity) will have to go legit (and pay taxes). Jim Beam doesn't have any thugs or gunmen on its payroll.

UPL8 - If criminals were excluded from the list, it would either be empty or full of people who are not powerful.

The 'burrowing' must stop. Goddamn gophers. ;)

You said it, Danni!

Yeah, making the forbes list is like being named "man of the year". It's not necessarily a badge of honor.

In this case, it's an acknowledgment of a narcotics-fueled insurgency in a country right next to ours. Our government could deal them a crippling blow by legalizing recreational drugs and increasing security along the southern border.
Neither legalization nor border security are popular enough to be politically attractive causes for someone to spearhead.

Big deal. Old Joe Kennedy ( and others)made his money dealing illegal substances and working with the mob and Irish terrorists. How many of those mobsters or their offspring now rub shoulders with politicians and almost heads of the DHS?
