Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

A power failure blacked out large swaths of Brazil and Paraguay for more than two hours late Tuesday, cutting off an estimated 60 million people. The failure of three transmission lines at Itaipu, the world's largest operating hydroelectric plant, created a domino effect that cut energy to 18 of 26 states in Brazil, including the country's two largest cities, So Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

Might want to get that fixed before the Olympics.

Oh there is going to be a lot of fucking going on in Rio tonight.

Good news - they had plenty of wax for candles.

Makes me wonder how our own power grid infrastructure is holding up.

Wouldn't take much to bring it all down.

The only difference between the "civilized" us and the "savage" them is electricity.

We have seen the results of short-term blackouts in major urban areas. The cream of humanity immediately churns to the top.

Widespread, long-term disruption of the electrical power grid would be death for millions.

Interesting speculation of what would happen if electricity (among other power sources) was permanently removed is in S. M. Stirling's series starting with Dies the Fire. Welcome back to the past.

"an unexplained atmospheric event"

In other words, they've got no fucking clue.

Sao Paulo can be pretty scary at night.

Tip of the hat to the lineman that brought it back on line in two hours.

Aren't all of these power outages the results of hackers attacking the infrastructure. I know I saw a story on multiple blackouts in brazil due to cyber terrorism and they specifically talked about the vulnerability of hydroelectric grid tie ins.

What's that ol crash overide line: Hack the Planet!!

Makes me wish I knew more about computers......

Blackout Affects 60 Million in Brazil

I read the headline as "blackout effects 60 Muslims in Brazil"... and I thought to myself what a stroke of evil genius...America found a way to make blackouts for Muslims in another hemisphere! Those would be uber-cool hacking skillz!

Then read the headline again.

Oh....

That's the problem with these mega grids. One grenade takes out half the country. Too big to fail.

Did the power shut down on GWB's 100,000 acre ranch?

GWB's 100,000 acre ranch

Sorry... what???

He has property there?

He has property there?

News to me.

America found a way to make blackouts for Muslims in another hemisphere!

Watch out, tosser. They'll be turning out your lights next!

Those would be uber-cool hacking skillz!

Ugh... sad thing is that it's probably not that difficult for someone who knows what they're doing to inflict this sort of damage remotely. Every non-shitty country is making extensive preparations for conflict in cyberspace and the power grids are a juicy target.

In a sense, the conflict is already out in the open. The US, for example, has apparently been doing some very shady shit to the Chinese of late. The favor is returned in full, of course. All of this cyberwarfare shit seems to be fairly restrained now. Countries could do a lot more damage to one another if they wanted to.

Let's hope that heads cooler than the chickenhawks and more mature than 13-year-old script fanatics have the last say in this issue.

They can only do 60 Muslims at a time.
