Hate Church Protests at Obama Girls' School

Westboro Baptist Church, the fringe-of-the-fringe anti-gay group famous for protesting at military funerals and claiming that God is punishing the country for its tolerance of homosexuality, was spotted this morning protesting outside Sidwell Friends, the school attended by Sasha and Malia Obama.

Actually, manypaths, they should be kept away from anything highschool or below. There's no reason for them to be there anyway. The only reason Westboro is doing this is to make a scene.

If Westboro wants to protest at a college, let them go ahead. Colleges are all about freedom of expression, and it would be fun to see them get pelted with piss-filled beer bottles.

Sometime good protestors can have a positive impact on school kids. Say, civil rights protestors. I would even say the Phelps are probably doing these kids some good by turning them off to this brand of religion. You know most of the kids are just going to point and laugh.

I'm holding out for time and education to remove Phelp's type. Or an escaped zoo animal.

I'd have to know a lot more about how the Phelpsers promulgate their message and what that message actually is. As an ACLU red-hot, I fear that the First Amendment actually extends to this Westboro "church."

The First Amendment is the single most important principle of this country.
I would still have great difficulty in restraining myself from taking a baseball bat to these lunatics.
Their actions bring nothing but pain to hundreds of people on a daily basis.
I am afraid that my philosophical beliefs would be submerged by my anger and indignation.

They have a right to believe anything they wish to believe and the right to state these beliefs. I wish that they possessed a shred of decency. Attacking children or the mourning friends and relatives of fallen military personnel is beyond the pale.

The First Amendment is indeed the single most important principle of this country. But it is not absolute, and I'm sure my beloved ACLU would agree that it should not be. It is limited by laws on libel and slander, laws against inciting to riot (even against one's self), laws against poorly defined obscenity that should include not only graphic depictions of people screwing but the gross, doctored nine-foot bloody fetus photos that yahoos wave outside clinics.
