Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

Realising they sounded average at best, Macca wasn't surprised in 1962 when record label Decca refused to sign the band - who went on to become the biggest of all time.

In an interview with Xfm's IAN CAMFIELD, he said: "We obviously weren't that good. We were formulating it all.

They would've been better without McCartney.....

......and Yoko

McCartney, isn't he that guy from Wings?

You're crazy if you think the Beatles would have been better without McCartney.

Paul's compositions under Lennon/McCartney. Still think they would have been better sans Macca?

I can't believe someone is defending McCartney got a monetary stake in his music or something?

The best musician and song writer who played with the Beatles was George Harrison.

The Beatles were a step in the evolution of music.

If it weren't for the Beatles, the Rolling Stones would have been the most overrated band of all time.

KANSAS FAN

I'd sooner pull my own head off than listen to "Dust in the Wind" one more time.

McCartney: Beatles Weren't That Good
You got that right. Glad to see he agrees with me. Though I'd take it a step further and say they really fucking sucked. What was that obnoxious song? Give Peace a Chance? or some shit? Musically boring, and lame. Call them the "2 note wonders." Fuck them.

The Beatles weren't that good in 1962 when Decca refused to sign them?

Before Ringo Starr joined up?

Before they went to Hamberg and honed their craft?

Before they went on to become one of the most popular, innovative, pivotal, generational touchstone bands of all time?

Yeah, Spud can buy that.

Spud luffs the Beatles.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeaaaaaaaah!

After playing their last live gig on the roof of their recording studio John Lennon famously quipped...

"I'd like to say 'thank you' on behalf of the group and ourselves, and I hope we passed the audition!"

Spud would also like to say TY and yes, you all passed the audition.

Be Well.

What was that obnoxious song? Give Peace a Chance? or some shit?

Actually, that was Lennon with the Plastic Ono Band not with the Beatles.

Peace = Boring?

How would you know?

This planet's never really known peace.

Sorry, the song's boring you say?

Well, maybe Toby Keith will do a countrified remake and then you can dig on that.

An MC Rove rap version?

Accappella Ashcroft?

Is it the song or is it the sentiment you find so unappealing?

Be Well.

The beatles were an exceptionally good band. One of the best. John Lennon was the best songwriter of popular music ever. McCartney was good too. Plus they had that kind of thing where the whole was larger than the sum of it's parts.

Overall, though, for me, I would have to say Pink Floyd was the best band ever. The irony is that they only had a few 'hit' songs, but have 2 albums in the top ten of all time.

Lennon and McCartney wrote so many great songs it is amazing. I can't think of anyone else even close to them in the quality or the quantity of great pop songs. Music though is not a competitive sport and I hate saying one group or performer is the best or the worst.

MTV had the Beatles Anthology on--last month?

It was just great.

And Spud is correct about changing out the drummer for Ringo. They took off after that.

The great part of the Beatles is that their music changed--grew--adding instrumentals.

You could still pick it was the Beatles, but they brought different sounds.

-------

Unlike today--blah--all rap sounds the same. You can't tell (very few) one rapper from another.

I just picked up a guitar at a yard sale for $30 made by Harmony, and started playing again after a few years. I re-learned I Will and Rocky Racoon, and started re-listening to the Beatles. I don't know how anyone could say that they didn't write some of the best songs of this era, especially McCartney. For No One still brings sweet melancholy everytime I hear it.

The wrong two beatles died first.

Riight.

Anyone who actually experienced those days knows the Beatles were much more than a band.

They were almost God-like and spoke to/for a generation.

Well...a generation that was in a drug induced state...but still...God-like all the same.

Just think of all the weed that's ever been smoked listening to Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

".a generation that was in a drug induced state."

And lead the fight for civil rights and against the Indochina war. If you use the right drugs, it's easy to chew bubblegum and walk at the same time.

Live,

"Give Peace a Chance" was not released by The Beatles.

That was John Lennon Plastic Ono Band.

In my opinion, overall, none of the former Beatles were quite as good as their group effort.

Some obvious exceptions include:

John Lennon
Imagine (single)
Mind Games (single)
Walls and Bridges (entire album)

Paul McCartney
Maybe I'm Amazed (single)
Wild Life (entire album)
My Love
Band on the Run (album was commercial success but still sucked)
The Paul fans will have to fill in the rest...the guy just kept putting out crap....I mean albums....I'm sure there's some good stuff in there...Venus and Mars worked if you smoked enough grass.

George Harrsion
All Things Must Pass (entire album)

Ringo Starr
Photograph (single)
It Don't Come Easy (single)

In my opinion....

My favorite was always Elanor (sp?) Rigby.

And I hope you'll pardon my disagreeing, but: Yes. The Beatles were indeed that good.

Letus,

If we started typing our favorite Beatles tunes, this thread would grow.

The majority of their songs from all their released albums were...well...good.

A few duds....

Ringo singing Act Naturally comes to mind.

I re-learned I Will and Rocky Racoon, and started re-listening to the Beatles. I don't know how anyone could say that they didn't write some of the best songs of this era, especially McCartney. For No One still brings sweet melancholy everytime I hear it.

I will and RR are two of the first songs I learned to play by the Beatles. Never go too long without playing Blackbird to myself.

I can't stand the Beatles.

Thanks to my aunt who played Sgt. Peppers Lonely Heart Club Band album nonstop one summer.

You should reserve those feelings for your aunt and leave the beatles out of it.

*picks up guitar and strums....

Lisa,

It might have helped if you had....ummm...enjoyed whatever your aunt was smoking.

In your defense, SPLHCB was definitely a highly saturated album. Very commercial.

But...how can someone not like Abbey Road or Revolver or Help (album) or....?

Must be generational.

My kids love...awwww...Kenya West. I can't stand him.

Anyone heard the "Let It Be" Naked album? They stripped out all the strings and George Martin's other production tricks. Get Back, Across the Universe, and The Long and Winding Road sound completely different...and better.

They stripped out all the strings and George Martin's other production tricks.

I have both albums,The first was produced by Phil Spector

Having been raised a Beatle fan....now they sound like shi*...I mean, Shinto. They were a teen band like Menudo (BARF!) and made their money.
Dave Clark Five were better.

I don't personally get their appeal. They are blah to Me.
