France's Sarkozy launches controversial national identity debate

www.csmonitor.com

President Nicolas Sarkozy's government started a 'what is French?' website today. Critics say the national identity debate is intended to stir up anti-immigrant sentiment ahead of national elections in the spring.

What does it mean to be French? Let's help Sarzkoy out:

1. Not taking showers
2. Eating stinky cheese
3. Watching crappy boring movies
4. Being rude to tourists, especially American ones
5. Being envious of America and opposing America in everything and anything
6. Taking too much vacation time

Toyota pulls out of Formula One

Toyota has pulled out of Formula One motor racing in a move that deals yet another blow to the scandal-hit sport and leaves it entirely without participation by Japanese automakers, tyremakers or big corporate sponsors.

Fiorina expected to announce US Senate plans

www.google.com

SACRAMENTO, Calif. After months of speculation but few public appearances, former Hewlett-Packard chief executive Carly Fiorina was expected to announce her plans Wednesday for the U.S. Senate seat held by liberal stalwart Barbara Boxer of California.

Detroit elected Mayor Bing to a full four year term, thus ending the shameful Kilpatrick era once and for all. Of the two major candidates running (there was a crazy lady running a write-in campaign) Bing seemed the more conservative. In fact, Barrow at one time claimed that Bing must be a Republican, thinking this would scare Detroiters into not voting for him. While Barrow seemed to believe that money grows on trees and that the city's problem could be fixed with wishful thinking, Bing is a business owner who understands that sometimes tough and unpopular decision have to be made.

The Republican-controled Senate in Michigan has one more Republican. Last year Democrat Mark Shower was elected to the House of Representatives and as a result a special election was held yesterday to fill the seat for the reaming 1 year (when the whole senate is up for re election). The Michigan Senate has been holding a tought line against Governor Granholm as it relates to taxes and yesterday they were rewarded for their efforts. When Republicans act like Republicans, they win elections, go figure. But when they act like cheap Democrats, they lose. There is a lesson to be learned here.

Voters in Ohio approved casinos in their state. The Detroit media has been having their panties in a bunch for the past couple of weeks over this issue because it will affect business in Detroit casinos. I don't go to casinos, but I would rather go to the Windsor casinos (accross the river in Canada) than the Detroit ones because in Windsor there is no smoking. In fact, the reason we don't have a state-wide smoking ban is due to fucking Democrats who represent the districts were the casinos are, they want an exception which is completely unacceptable. It could be possible that next year there will be a ballot question regarding smoking in Michigan. If Ohio casinos have no-smoking, I would rather go there than Canada, otherwise, Ceaser's Windsor it it, all of the fun, non of the stink.

6. Taking too much vacation time

There is no such thing as too much vacation time. It's insane to think a person should enjoy spending a large portion of their lives being a wage slave until they reach the point where they're just waiting to die.

The media is constatly making the point today that there was lower turn out in these elections, especially from young and black voters. Why would black voters not bother to show up in Virginia and New Jersey? Maybe because the people running don't look like them? They only vote for black candidates? I smell bigotry here. In Atlanta there were six black candidates running for mayor and a white candidate. Someone in Atlanta, a black person, made the suggestion that blacks should get behind the most electable black candidate or else there would be a run-off and, gasp, a white woman could be elected mayor, we can't have that, can't we?

If the Afghans and Pakistanis want us out of there, just give us Bin Laden, dead or alive, we don't care. That's what we should tell them, and then carry it through if they give us Bin Laden.

I am sure that everyone on their deathbed has declared "I should have spent more time at the office."

Member, are you filling in for BL2?

He isn't BL2/Babbler but he plays one on the nooner.

New Jersey, little ouch

Virginia, big ass ouch

It's insane to think a person should enjoy spending a large portion of their lives being a wage slave until they reach the point where they're just waiting to die.

That is rightwingding nirvana.

Taxman, I can write coherenlty, even though I may make spelling mistakes. Comparing me with BL2 is crazy. I love BL2, I agree with some of what he writes, but the way he writes, geeeeeeez, give me a break!

Today's nooner is gonna blow. I just wanted to make sure of that.

You certainly did.

OH, I forgot, GM won't be selling Opel and Chrysler is going down the tubes.

It used to be a few years back that Ford really sucked and Chrysler was somewhat decent, now it's the other way around, Ford is apparently imporving in quality (jury still out as far as I'm concernd) and Chrysler's quality isn't worrth shit.

Oh Taxman you are such a funngy guy, lol!

How the Right's Point Man Went Down

Sarah Palin and the Tea Party crowd drove the moderate from the race, but Doug Hoffman still lost the New York House seat. Max Blumenthal on what the GOP's embarrassing stumble means for 2010.

Who has seniority number #2 on this site (assuming RCade is #1)?

Corky I think that setting your sight on Hoffman does your party a disservice...it would behoove you to analyze what happened in Virginia and NJ instead of declaring victory and ignoring those losses.

Republicans are certainly going to do the same, and some have already come to the conclusion that we need a primary to get behind our candidate in congressional races.

Just some friendly advice.

Who has seniority number #2 on this site (assuming RCade is #1)?

There are many number 2's here in the DR. Unfortunately too many number 2's.

I would start a list, but that would not be in good taste to do that.

"With their great crusade in New York's 23rd extinguished, conservatives have shifted their focus to the good news in New Jersey and Virginia, where, following historical trends, Republican gubernatorial candidates trounced their Democratic rivals. Hoffman, once the conservative movement's white knight, has been tossed down the Orwellian memory hole.

But the right-wing's impulse purge has not ended there are still moderate Republicans to be crushed. Florida Governor Charlie Crist may be next on the hit list. As 2010 approaches, the movement is seeking its next "great win."

From the link.

VA has elected the opposite party rep as Gov each time it occurred in an off-year election since 1977. The Dem candidate ran away from the public option, and Obama, until the end.

And NJ was an incumbent Wall Streeter who represented the bad economy.

Just a little friendly advice.

Oh well nothing to worry about here. Whistling past the graveyard of majorities lost.

I see on Drudge that Pelosi declared victory for last night.

If it aint broke, don't fix it Corky. Good luck to the Dems in 2010!

If there had been a primary in the 23rd, neither Scozzafava or Hoffman would have been the candidate and the Republicans would have won. The party leadership did this to themselves with their backroom deals and I'm glad to see the voters didn't let them get away with it.

Holy cow! We are back on EST!

Holy cow! We are back on EST!

But the nooner still started at 1:00. WTF!

Good luck to the Dems in 2010!

That means good luck to Americans in 2010, because as the economy grows, so will the Dems chances of small losses in Congress in an off year.

Unemplyment will be a problem for Dems. That is why we get articles about wonderful it is to be unemployed. The Obamamite media is trying to help out, but I don't think it will work.

Member, 10% unemployment is the new 5%, you didn't get the memo?

Yep, I got the moemo alright. I just don't pay attention to it, lol!

1. Bathing regularly. (Every French person I've ever met was better groomed than a great many Americans I knew or worked near.)

2. That's a bad thing?

3. You mean watching artistically advanced, trendsetting films that influenced the art of cinema for decades? Oh, and naming America's greatest film genre (film noir)?

4. Have you been to France? I haven't, so I can't speak to this one.

5. Envious? Link?

6. As others have said, what's too much vacation time? Maybe if Americans got more vacation time, we'd be more productive and happier. (And those longer vacations are available in most of Europe...)

Being French

7. Being confortable with Nuclear Energy

How about that you Libs? If the French are something to emulate, how about Nuclear Power? Nuclear Power can't be all that bad if the French rely it on so much.

5. Being envious of America and opposing America in everything and anything

Still waiting for Bill O to declare victory in his boycott of France.

Now there is some REAL envy.

Nuclear Power can't be all that bad

It depends if you have 1) high quality standards in the construction vs the get r done quick and cheap mentality and 2) a good plan for disposal of the waste.

Well, if Liberals know so much about construction and waste disposal, why not propose more Nuclear Power plants? I am sure Al Gore can invest in them since they would reduce carbon emissions.

726 - throw it in the mountains in Nevada

It depends if you have 1) high quality standards in the construction vs the get r done quick and cheap mentality and 2) a good plan for disposal of the waste.

Nuke plants in Western Europe are built according to the same standards set by the NRC for plants in the US and their reactors are leased from the same companies. And what exactly is their plan for disposal of the waste? I'd suggest we just do the same thing.

We need to get Reid out of the Senate. Otherwise it won't happen. Fucking Reid.

The Dow is up 100+ points. I guess they liked the results of last night's elections, lol!

Just answered my own question. Sounds like the same thing we do here.

www.ocrwm.doe.gov

Nuclear very closely matches carbon in terms of output value.

If CO2 emmissions are SO bad, nuclear should be the stop-gap toward a viable green, renewable option.

As it stands right now, ethanol, wind and solar are criminally inferior - in the order stated.

"I guess they liked the results of last night's elections"

In the one election with Congressional implications, the House added a Democrat.

Great. Tighties praying for high unemployment.

"As it stands right now, ethanol, wind and solar are criminally inferior - in the order stated."

#45 | Posted by JeffJ at 2009-11-04 02:09 PM | Reply | Flag: wrong

Solar is 70 percent efficient, wind better than 50, and ethanol about 1 percent.

Dan, the California 10th also had a Dem win, so Hoffman's blaze of glory was not the only election with Congressional implications.

Still, I think Dems should look at the Governor elections and see what they could improve.

I am not praying for high unemployment you dumbass! I am just saying that the problem of unemployment will hurt Dems. Even as the economy is supposedly out of recession, corporations announce layoffs. Like it or not, unemployment is a lagging indicator, which if of cold confort to people trying to find new work.

Everyone got their eye soap handy?

www.youtube.com

Corky, who is praying for high unemployment? If you are going to say that a prediction of high unemployment that will topple Dems is praying for unemployment (you will) you would be wrong. It is a prediction that unemployment was not capped at 8% as promised and this will continue, which would hurt the party in power.

When Bush was in office, the economy was continuously talked down, and in this case, it actually IS down.

"Steele Rebukes Palin, Pawlenty

Rogue warfare, perhaps?

RNC Chairman Michael Steele issued a stern rebuke to conservatives like Sarah Palin and Tim Pawlenty, who immersed themselves in Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman's losing House campaign.

"If you don't live in the district, you don't vote there, your opinion doesn't matter very much," Steele said. "It serves as an important lesson on how we manage an opportunity to win a seat. And how not to mismanage by putting in a botched process."

Steele went on, "I don't see a victory in losing seats. I'm in the business of multiplication and addition. I want more Republicans. I don't buy that we somehow find victory in defeat."

www.thedailybeast.com

Great. Tighties praying for high unemployment.

I love it when can't find the facts they need to put into the preconceived molds their tiny little minds have fabricated, so they make 'em up.

Desperation is an ugly thing, but in the proper venue (here e.g.) by the right person (corky e.g.) it is head-spinningly hilarious.

See, what Steele is doing is learning from defeats, Corky.

That's wishful Repube thinking.

Jobs are a lagging indicator, but the market is a predictive one. Based on that performance, we should see hiring starting in the new year and continuing throughout the year.

Which will be good for everyone except the 23 percenters.

Steele is a party boss he has a job to do. He has to say what he is saying. This is a war between the rank and file and the elite and it's happening in both parties as evidenced by the lack of enthusiasm for the VA gov candidate (not Liberal enought for some constituencies).

Steele is learning what a Poli Sci 101 grad could teach him?

Well, that does sound about right.

So the market counts now? Bush should have been installed as king when we had a 14000 Dow

-And how not to mismanage by putting in a botched process."

That would make Sarah P a real, "botch", eh?

Andy, don't you understand that the market is inflatied when Repubs are in office, but a fair indicator when Dems are in office?

Steele went on, ".... I want more Republicans. I don't buy that we somehow find victory in defeat."

I want more Libertarians. In fact, I'd be happy to see one. But that doesn't mean I'd vote for a socialist with an (L) after their name just because some party leaders picked them.

Exactly, Zat.

Ethanol is the biggest scam, followed by wind, followed by solar.

Apologies if my wording was vague.

Andy, don't you understand that the market is inflatied when Repubs are in office, but a fair indicator when Dems are in office?

That depends on what the market is doing. When it was 14k, the left said it was not an indicator of anything. But after it crashed (and Bush was still in office) it meant the world.

Bub, but, but, Jeff, don't you know that governor Graholm says wind is great and will create lots of jobs?! C'mon, get with the program, lol!

OK, this Nooner is great. My job is done. GTG.

Bush, Clinton Debate At Radio City In February

Former presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush will go head to head in a debate at Radio City Music Hall next February, as part of a series pairing liberal and conservative thinkers called "Minds That Move The World."

The event takes place on February 25, 2010 -- anyone can suggest a question here.

The debate "will be formatted to allow for President Clinton and President Bush to each present their thoughts on a wide range of important current events and national issues through a moderated question and answer period during which the moderator can elicit information and insights into particularly pertinent topics of the day," according to a press release.

Tickets, which go on sale Sunday, range from $60 to $1,250.

Corky, click your link, they've cancelled it because of the way the promoter was promoting it as a "death match." Too bad, it would have been great.

"Unemplyment will be a problem for Dems."

Perhaps but blocking unemployment benefits will hurt Republicans worse. Most Americans know why there is high unemployment and though they may be impatient with Obama they aren't dumb enough to think bringing back Republicans who caused their unemployment in the first place with result in new jobs. FDR was reelected and unemployment was double what it is right now. Ronald Reagan had higher unemployment than we have right now.

If the Afghans and Pakistanis want us out of there,

"Obama Watched HBO Special About Himself Instead of Election Results"

newsbusters.org

JPMorgan Chase & Co. has agreed to a settlement worth more than $700 million over federal regulators' charges that it made unlawful payments to friends of public officials to win municipal bond business in Jefferson County, Ala.

The scandal over the county's $3.9 billion debt has pushed it to the brink of filing what would be the biggest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. The SEC announced the settlement with JPMorgan, which canceled interest-rate swap contracts with the county worth $700 million in March.

The Wall Street bank did not admit or deny the SEC allegations in agreeing to pay a $25 million civil fine and a $50 million payment to the county, and to forfeit $647 million in termination fees it claims the county owes from the canceled swap agreements.

How about three strikes and you're dissolved for Corporations? Oh, I almost forgot they only pay paltry fines, which never discourage further wrongdoing. It takes twenty years to get a conviction that will hold in Federal Court, so Prosecutors settle. Not so with human beings that haven't got twenty years and millions to spare, when they become targets they just pile on the charges until they get a plea deal.

MORE INDOCTRINATION OF OUR SCHOOL CHILDREN COURTESY THE 20%ER LIBERALS

bighollywood.breitbart.com

The above links contian the 11 videos and transcripts of what the children sing.

People ought to be more scared that their children will be indoctrinated to worship Obama than their children getting H1N1. There is a lower chance of your kid getting H1N1 at school than your children being indoctrinated. No wonder Liberals have such a disdain for people who homeschool their children, no wonder they oppose vouchers, these options would prevent them miseducating the children.

"People ought to be more scared that their children will be indoctrinated to worship Obama than their children getting H1N1."

Hilarious.
Are you kidding or are you really that paranoid?

Member - Parents do a better job of indoctrinating kids than schools do, my dad driving me around with Rush on the radio was definitely more of an influence than my dumbass teachers.

It wasn't until I was 12 that I learned that people actually considered themselves liberal, I thought it was a horrible smear word.

Parents do a better job of indoctrinating kids than schools do

Oh the horror! Parents actually attempting to rear their children in accordance with their own ideals.

These kids should just be confiscated at birth by the state so they are raised proper - right?

Jeff - You've got me all misunderstood. Schools shouldn't (and aren't) able to indoctrinate kids if they get their values from their parents.

I know because I remain a Conservative after 15 years of school (almost graduated).

What? The whole purpose of public education is to indoctrinate/socialize/
enculturate children to become good little submissive, patriotic conformist drones who will happy to toil endlessly their whole lives as little wage-slaves and consumers.

Jury came about an hour ago. Split verdict. Instead of Life Without Parole (if special circumstances had been found true) or 75 years to life(if separate special allegations had been found true), the jury split the proverbial baby so that he now only gets 25 to life. Still a shitload of time. But he is currently only 25 years old so has some hope of getting out someday.

Yeah, I'd like to know what he was expecting to get (you mentioned 75+ years). It would have something to look forward to but just think of your prime years being wasted away, and theres nothing (short of going all Shawshank) you can do about it.

Ahhhhhh geez Moder8 He confessed repeatedly?? Then He should be damned glad He got 25 Years instead of Life W/O Parole. 25 is a LONGGGGG time. 6 Months seemed like a lifetime. I can't imagine 25 Years. But hell at least it's better than the alternative.

Who here has an entomology background?

Some, jak. Found a bug you can't identify?

Side note: I found an "endangered" moth the other day. Catocala amestris. See if you can google it and tell me why it's near dead.

Hint: When it's wings are spread, the lower wings are dayglo striped orange, making it easy prey to see.

Its a a caterpillar.

Its green.

Its 4 inches long.

It's diameter is 1.5 inches.

Its fucking huge.

Its segmented---like a green Michelin Man.

It has small but distinct yellow dots on its lateral---one on each segment.

Its got yellow "horns", and what looks like a fucking beak.

Rhagastis lambertoni?

They're beautiful caterpillars, but ugly as shit with wings. Most moths are like that, most butterflys are the opposite.

The same pattern, but the segments are more distinct and the insect is much bigger.

I'm taking this fucker to the extension agent tomorrow.

It's a caterpillar of some kind of luna moth, undoubtedly.

Its very similar to Actias Luna---but without the lateral line.

I'll see what the county agent says.

This time next year, it might be Actias Maoii

Having a species named after you would be great. Unless it kills people.

I'm trying to figure out where to report spotting the rare moth (Catocala amestris) I did. I'm not surprised it's endangered, though. Not only is it dayglow orange under the wings, but it tried to commit suicide to my orb weavers several times a night.

It's too bad I didn't catch the guy when he was a caterpillar. They look science fiction esque. Long white/yellow ooze with black vertical stripes and bright yellow splotches.
