Afghan Runoff Challenger Quits

Afghan presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah withdrew from the upcoming runoff election on Sunday, saying he believes the second round would be as fraudulent as the first. "I want this to be an example for the future so that no one again tries to use fraud to abuse the rights of the Afghan people," Abdullah said at a news conference.

I agree. How stupid is that.

The guy is not very bright. He said he would not participate in the election unless certain conditions were met. Obviously the current president made sure those conditions were not met so he had to pull out of the election.

The guy runs against the incumbent, loses, yells "fraud," galvanizes the world press, gets the unheard-of result of being granted a runoff, and then says "oh, never mind."

If you believe what Mr. Abdullah is saying, then the situation hasn't changed and likely the runoff election would also be a fraud. As such, he does not want to 'legitimize' the runoff election by participating. It appears, for now, that Mr. Abdullah is content to politically handicap the Karzai government by casting some doubt on its legitimacy. In general, it's always easier to be "a spoiler" than to lead/engage.

Meanwhile, to more accurately be considered "A Palin", Mr. Abdullah would have to win the runoff, serve for "a while" and then resign.

It probably means, no more troops.

We can't depend on Karzai to do the job. I think everyone in America now realizes nothing's going our way as long as Karzai is in charge. He will just get us wasted for nothing.

Breaking news:

Next Saturday's Afghan presidential election run-off has been cancelled by the independent election commission, officials say.

The decision comes a day after sole challenger Abdullah Abdullah pulled out, leaving only President Hamid Karzai in the race.

Dr Abdullah, who had demanded key poll officials quit, said he was quitting as he did not think it would be fair.

The first round of the vote in August was marred by mass electoral fraud.

The BBC's Andrew North in Kabul says a key reason for holding a run-off was to try to restore some legitimacy to the election after the discredited first round.

He says the cancellation of the vote seems the most unsatisfactory outcome to the whole process.

Finally Obama's excuses are finished, and he has to make a decision. New troops for Afghanistan, or just more pissing on the soldiers already there? Perhaps the first real decision of his presidency. Color swatches don't count. Will he grow a spine? Does he still have his stones, or do Hillary and Michelle own them? The world awaits...
