Will the country wake up before it's too late?

By Thomas Sowell

Just one year ago, would you have believed that an unelected government official, not even a cabinet member confirmed by the Senate but simply one of the many "czars" appointed by the president, could arbitrarily cut the pay of executives in private businesses by 50 percent or 90 percent?

Did you think that another "czar" would be talking about restricting talk radio? That there would be plans afloat to subsidize newspapers that is, to create a situation where some newspapers' survival would depend on the government's liking what they publish?

Barack Obama has not only said that he is out to "change the United States of America," the people he has been associated with for years have expressed in words and deeds their hostility to the values, the principles, and the people of this country.

Pretty well sums it up.

Barack Obama has not only said that he is out to "change the United States of America....

You know 100% that isn't what Obama meant, A1. Come on now.

"Did you imagine that anyone would even be talking about having a panel of so-called "experts" deciding who could and could not get life-saving medical treatments? "

I fully expected the Republicans to come up with this idea, yes.

Naah...he didn't mean that at all, did he?

Hey, Dumbaxe, you know somethin'? You're kinda cute when you get all pussy-faced like that...

The only ones I see trying to dismantle American are Rioght Wnged Fucktards pissed because a Black and a Democrat is President. They are doing their level bests to see Him Fail because if He succeeded that would make them look stupider than they already are. Yes I know stupider isn't a word.

No it doesn't. In fact it intentionally left out large parts of the equation that might of led to a more nuanced view and a better understanding.

But that was not the point of this article.

ram two bills through Congress in his first year each bill more than a thousand pages long too fast for either of them to be read, much less discussed.

Am1st,

While I generally agree with the principles raised, you lose credibility to place full blame on this administration.

You quickly forget that Bush's legislation was at least as devastating. This also including ramming the tyrannical Patriot Act through Congress with no reading and minimal debate. No, it was not warranted by the well-timed Anthrax attacks (strain only available at Level 4 Military Installation). Also, The Military Commissions Act of 2006 effectively suspended habeas corpus and freed up the executive branch to designate any American citizen an "enemy combatant" forfeiting all privileges accorded under the Bill of Rights. Bush was the one to authorize in 2002, the funding for the U.S. Northern Command, or NORTHCOM and allowed Foreign Troop training and the trend toward global police force. Bush just wasn't up-front about these things. In fact, if you recall, he basically labelled himself a dictator.

You also lose a ton of credibility to place FoxNews in your argument, which only propagates the same brainless left-only to blame babble.

Much of the rhetoric similar in theme to 'Dismantling America' was facilitated by Bush and earlier administrations.

And what about Asst Atty Gen James Comey. That whole debacle is still not completely understood. As acting AG, Comey was so uncomfortable with the legality he refused to sign off on "an operation so clandestine he wasn't allowed to name it or even describe what it did" domestic spying program. So what happened? Bush made it an executive order.

The Last RoundUp

If you truly want to find the source of 'Dismantling America', you have to take a much broader look. Of course, FoxNews would never give you this information so you could get it right.

.....yeah but its only for 'private businesses' that have turned communist by accepting public money to bail them out........

.......they stopped being 'private' when they stuck out their hands for a 'public' handout..........

That wasn't one of the conditions in accepting the bail out. This may be a constitutional problem.

The Magic Christian, right? Peter Sellers was great. Too bad he died so young.

"Peter Sellers was great. Too bad he died so young."

Finally you've said something intelligent, Goatman. From Clouseau to Chauncey Gardiner to Dr. Strangelove, Sellers was a comic genius.

Sellers was awesome.

I've always felt Cluseau was his best character, but he really showed his versatility in Strangelove.

Dr Strangelove was his best, but his last movie (I think) 'Being There' was absolute genius as well.

Pink Panther was a little too slapstick for my taste, but I still enjoyed the movies.

Name the movie, Null:

"I'm supposed to drive you to Wichita to catch a train?"

"Yeah, we'd appreciate it."

"Train don't run out of Wichita, lessen you're a hog or a cattle...People train runs out of Stubville."

"That's fine" *The 2 guys grab a huge trunk and prepare to load it into the back of a pickup truck, where they will be riding*

"Leave it be. Get yer lazy behind out here and put that trunk up in the back!" *addressing his wife who is sitting in the truck*

"Oh no, we've got it - it's very heavy."

"She don't mind. She's short and skinny, but she's strong. Her first baby come out sideways, she didn't scream or nothing."

"Isn't that something? You're a real trooper. We've got it already - it's done"

I agree - the exception being "The Pink Panther Strikes Again".

All sorts of subtle humor in that one.

"Name the movie, Null"

Sorry, Jeff, we leftist intellectuals only watch movies directed by guys with names like Fellini, Bergman, Kurosawa, etc. :)

Cop out!

You perfectly quoted Aliens as the McCain campaign was entering its final stages of implosion.

Now, Aliens is a vastly under-rated flick because it's sci-fi, but still....

The movie I was quoting was Planes Trains and Automobiles.

That's it man, game over man, game over! What the fuck are we gonna do now? What are we gonna do?

--Rtards in late October, 2008

I don't know if Aliens is under-rated or not but it's one of the greatest kick-ass sci-fi/horror flicks ever made. The original was better, though, in a different sort of way.

I tried watching the original, but I was bored to tears.

What I like about the second movie is that much of its greatness went beyond special effects and action. It was the character interaction, the overall plot and some pretty good acting.

I loved that Bill Paxton's character (whom you quoted), Hudson, was pretty much a coward; but when it was ALL on the line, he became a soldier.

Lots of good sub-plots contained within as well.

Seriously good flick and your quote when applied to McCain's campaign was great.

Having said all of that, it was a little over-done at the end.

Nully, too, can do the broken clock thing.

Aliens was by far the best of the series, though Alien was such a different flick for the sci/fi horror genre when it came out, it is hard to say it isn't as good as its successor.

I just watched Alien a couple of nights ago AAMOF. The scene at the end in the pod when Sigourney is "getting ready for bed" with scanty panties -- hot!

I like it when the tough-assed Hispanic chick bitch slaps Hudson:

Hudson: Hey Vasquez, have you ever been mistaken for a man?

Vasquez: No. Have you?

"I tried watching the original, but I was bored to tears."

Figures. Typical Hollywood fan preferring a lot of special effects and guns blazing. The original was creepier, a classic haunted house flick with one killer in the house/mansion/spaceship.

"Sellers was a comic genius."

The "Magic Christian" was a riot, but "Dr Strangelove" was his best; He was pure genius there.

Perhaps I didn't give it enough time.

I DVR'd it, watched the first hour and fell asleep.

Absolutely.

His ability to morph from one character to the next was incredible.

I DVR'd it, watched the first hour and fell asleep.

If you've never seen it, you have to see the end just to catch Sigourney Weaver in her itty bitty scanty panties.

Or watch Half Moon Street for a full frontal. LOL

This is a fucking hot pic of Sigourney. It is one of my favorites

Ripley: Mother! I've turned the cooling unit back on. Mother!
Mother: The ship will automatically destruct in "T" minus five minutes.
Ripley: You... BITCH!

Have you ever wondered why it is on these sci-fi flicks that whenever a self-destruct mechanism is activated, every pipe in the joint starts spraying steam? Also, at the end of Alien and she is escaping in the pod, how is it the Nostromo had three different explosions? It seems the first one would have destoyed (or ignited) any subsequent bombs. And what is a mining vessel doing with a self-destruct mechanism anyway?

You don't know about the self-destruct on the rig?

Nice pic, Goat!

I am going to tread lightly here, but she bears a resemblance (at least in the face) to your late wife; based upon the picture you posted of her.

That's a great pic.

I am going to tread lightly here, but she bears a resemblance (at least in the face) to your late wife;

Jeff, my wife looked almost exactly like her. This picture, especially (maybe that's why I like it so much, but truth be told, I cut it out of a magazine before I met my wife) Everyone said that. Like Sigourney, she was tall, too. Sigourney is 6'1", my wife was 6' even. She had been asked for her autograph in airports before from people who thought she was Sigourney.

No need to lightly tread -- I'm honored you noticed the resemblance!

That's a great pic.

It looks like something out of a Tennessee Williams play, doesn't it?

What Null said.

and way better than a certain picture of a middle age dude on the beach

"It looks like something out of a Tennessee Williams play, doesn't it?"

Stella!!!

I also love that picture from an artistic standpoint -- the lighting, the clouds, the ciagarette, the B&W medium goes perfectly with the moodiness in Sigourney's face.

That's a great pic.

#39 | Posted by nullifidian

Yes, it is. She had a sultry look about her that transcended the manufactured 'beauty' that we see today from borderline-anorexic super-models.

She had been asked for her autograph in airports before from people who thought she was Sigourney.

That's really cool.

For what it's worth - my dad has been falsely ragarded as both Lee Iacoca and Don Shula. He totally played a cab driver who 'thought' he recognized him, but couldn't quite put a finger on who he was. When he said, "I am Don Shula." the cab-driver got SO excited! Pretty hilarious.

And that is NOTHING when compared with one of my bro's best-friend's dad - the guy is a spitting image of Bo Schembeckler - I kid you not. They HAD to be twins seperated at birth. I am DEAD serious.

I have a buddy in Georgia who is a spitting image of Al Gore. Here are a couple of shots of him:

Isn't someone going to mention that Sigourney, in that pic, with her short hair and all, looks like one super hot lesbo that could, and in a just and fair world, would, fuck your brains out?

For what it's worth, My Mother-in-law resembles Digit from Gorillas in the Mist.

"She had been asked for her autograph in airports before from people who thought she was Sigourney."

Man...all I've been asked for is to get them another drink

I am not turned on by the chick-on-chick thing, but this pic may be the exception.

She looks SO hot, I could understand Danni becoming a bit damp - and I would encourage her to do so.

GREAT pic!

The Obama Erection

Population of counties won by:
Democrats: 127 million
Republicans: 143 million
Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by:
Democrats: 13.2
Republicans: 2.1

The map of the territory Republicans won was mostly the land owned by the taxpaying citizens of the country.

Democrat territory mostly encompassed those citizens living in low income tenements and living off various forms of government welfare.

Does he really believe this?

"I don't know if Aliens is under-rated or not but it's one of the greatest kick-ass sci-fi/horror flicks ever made. The original was better, though, in a different sort of way."

You mean the first, not the original. : ) "Original" would imply that Aliens is a remake.

But yeah, two very different movies. The first is really a haunted house movie in outer space--fuckin' brilliant. The second is pretty much pure action, with big-ass bugs.

+++++

But back on topic, more fucking alarmist language from fearmongers. Dismantling America! GASP! No, having a vision different from yours does not mean destroying. And the examples the author uses are right out of the talking-points guidebook. Brownshirts, death panels, blah blah fucking blah. Bush did some insane shit (in my eyes), or less alarmingly things that horrified me (constitutionally and morally), but I would never put forth the argument that he was willfully "dismantling America."

Wouldn't it be amazing if public political discourse were presented in rational terms instead of rhetorical flourishes? If we took the time to read stuff and understand nuance rather than fly off the handle every chance we get.

Blah. Feh.

It's only going to get worse. The Dems appear close to going-it-alone on healthcare. In the process, we have an even more clear battleground divide on how we view the government's role in our lives. What this means is that in 2010 and 2012, the GOP won't have to articulate a thoughtful vision - they merely have to, in a simplistic way, adopt a small-government-limited taxes stance and demonize their opposition as big-government socialists. By the same token, the DNC appears to believe that the public will still be so disgusted by GOP governance from 2000-2006 that blaming their predecessors in a simplistic and exaggerated fashion will be sufficient in order to maintain power.

Mark my words - the mud-slinging will intensify over the next 2 cycles.

I agree with you, Jeff. And it makes me very sad.

- going-it-alone on healthcare

As the other side has no Bill to offer, and have strategerized that helping Obama and America fail helps them win, it was not a Dem decision to go it alone.

But the GOP has cut off it's nose to spite it's face, and is currently a horrible looking alternative to most of America.
