Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

New Yorkers are fleeing the state and city in alarming numbers -- and costing a fortune in lost tax dollars, a new study shows.

More than 1.5 million state residents left for other parts of the United States from 2000 to 2008, according to the report from the Empire Center for New York State Policy. It was the biggest out-of-state migration in the country.

The vast majority of the migrants, 1.1 million, were former residents of New York City -- meaning one out of seven city taxpayers moved out.

"The Empire State is being drained of an invaluable resource -- people," the report said.

Good. Maybe that way NY will have less seats in the House, meaning, less Liberals in power.

Nanc, it seems that even NPR listeners support Fox, incredible!

They are tired of being taxed into the oblivion.

The Yankees are about to get their asses kicked.

#3 - well FOX DOES support some of their commentators - it's only fitting!

#5 | Posted by cookfish - huh? Has another civil war begun and I've been uninformed?

And most of them come to Florida for some reason. The jerk factor is rising by the month.

Corkles and Danny are enough for an entire state.

The Chumple came to Florida for the sunshine and the wife swapping..... he's getting plenty of sun.

#9 - decipher please.

Because NY sucks, that's why. Anyone who's not dependent on the city for graft can decamp across one of the rivers, be in a relative utopia, and visit the city anytime he likes with tens of thousands of dollars to spare for whatever else.

Deciphered: Corkles being the jerk he is.

Shit, I wonder if this is going to end up cuting into all the Federal Dollars that get sent from NY to the South to support those poor, uneducated states in the biblebelt.

We'll have to wait and see I guess.

Lessee, The Chumple starts a thread dissing me, and I'm the jerk?

Frak off.

Because New Jersey looks so beautiful across the river?

We dumbasses in the poor, uneducated states just sent those blue-blood Ivy League hedge fund managers and investment bankers $1.4 trillion. Harvard's endowment is down 45%, dabbling in stuff they thought they understood, but didn't.

How 'bout we shut off all kinds of welfare, period? That sounds it would make everyone happy. You can know your tax dollars aren't going to knuckle-dragging hicks living in trailers, and we can know our tax dollars aren't going to Wharton grads with a beach house in the Hamptons.

After living in Florida more many years and having never been to New York I came to think that New York must be a wonderfull place to live. They apprently send all their assholes to Florida.

What manyputz fails to realize is that it was the poor who had no trouble making it through the depression past - families banded together - church folk took care of one another and the downtrodden. When one has no material goods to lose, they're less likely to hurl themselves from skyscrapers and the like. Poor people will make it just fine in the next wave - they know how to make do.

Poor folks will not seek out the rich if their riches are gone. The rich will seek out the poor to learn their ways. Believe me, the poor have been preparing for this - I asked a lady just the other day what she thought about this economy - she stated that she and hers were preparing for the worst and stocking up on barterable goods - food, ammunition, deer jerky - all the money in the world cannot buy a stick of common sense.

What state are you in RisR? I am willing to bet you and the people in that state didn't spend a fucking dime on that bailout. I bet your state gets more from the Feds then it sends to the Feds.

So, where you live?

Poopr people are stupid people. That's why they are poor.

Nice friends there nanc. Peas in a Pod.

My friends are buying houses and stocks you poor bitch.

Probably no greater place on Earth to be young, unmarried, and with some money in your pocket than NYC. Heck, even without money there is so much going on all the time that it still is a great place to be.
Problem is, when you marry and settle down, who wants to live in Queens, Brookly or Long Island? To move to any of the decent places in Westchester costs more money than most people can afford.

There are people who really don't know why others would be leaving New York during a recession?

New York is atronomically expensive, that's why.

Now let's start a thread trying to figure out why animals flea the forest in droves when there is a fire.....

A flea and a fly in a flue
Were imprisioned -- what could they do?
Said the fly, "Let us flee".
Said the flea, "Let us fly".
So together they flew through a flaw in the flue

NY politics is more complicated than that. Remember NYC currently has a Republican mayor, and the governor's seat changes parties pretty regularly.

I heard a rumor about the oil fields in Colorado. The new middle east....ironic.....Ellis Wyatt would understand.

People with money are sick of getting it stolen from them with no benefit. People hate paying taxes and if they can get away from it, they will...

The premise of the book is that profit motive and government getting out of the way is what leads to innovation and prosperity for all.

The villains of the book were the corporate CEO's who were in bed with government and used government's coersive power to create advantage for themselves.

Yes,but you actually have to be able to read an 800+ page book to find that out.

Because they suddenly realized that they were in fact, IN New York.

#33 | Posted by JeffJ

I've read the book. Several times. I know what it says. Thanks for your spin, though.

I have never had a desire to go to NY.

I love small little townships.

You may have read it, but you clearly didn't comprehend its message.

Nice spin though.

BTW - you just exceeded your 2-sentence limit. :-)

I'm with you. I stay out of the cities if possible.

#21 | Posted by Manypaths - Most of our friends are land and cattle barons and have businesses of their own and we're not afraid as we're preparing for our other friends and family for when the bottom falls out. As for us, we have several pieces of property and two homes you numbskull. Do you honestly believe when the bottom falls out, ANYBODY is going to seek out a CEO or banker if they're hungry and homeless? No, they will seek out people who can and will help them.

"You may have read it, but you clearly didn't comprehend its message."

You're full of shit. I'm not going to waste time deconstructing that idiotic book again. Been there, done that.

BTW - you just exceeded your 2-sentence limit. :-)

Yeah, but they were really short sentences, so I thought I could go up to 4 without selling out my principles.

You're full of shit

No I am not.

You previously stated that the book glorified CEO's to the point of being heroic. However, I called you on that shit when I asked how James Taggert or Orren Boyle were painted as heroic.

You had no reply.

Your 'deconstruction' of the book is disingenuous. It's almost as if you are an apostate, given your deep-seated hatred for it as well as the slanted way in which you portray its message.

Yeah, but they were really short sentences, so I thought I could go up to 4 without selling out my principles.

Good point - they were very short sentences. I'll cede that one to you.

Anyways, you are ultimately correct.

We've had this discussion too many times before.

Re-cycling the same arguments is a waste of time.

Can I call the storage shed I rent my second apt?

Is it nicer than the Plymouth you live out of?

What a crock, if the bottom truly fell out and poor people came seeking a cup of water, you and ours would shoot them down before they got up the drive.

You're free to drink from the hand pump near the head of the drive. That's what it's there for.

I believe I would leave town too if my state had a woman with big balls as a Senator (Hillary) and a blind man as Governor.

I know Hillary is not there now but it's unlikely anything has changed except Spitzer stopped paying for sex.

You mean he is getting it for free?

Doubtful--not from his wife.

She canceled him due to him being a pre-existing condition screwing with whores.

Have to wait 3 years until he checks negative for HIV AIDS.

Atlas was a great book.

Null--there wasn't one business CEO guy with any redeeming qualities --only the people who left--forced out really by the gov't and the henchmen who were controlling everything.

Can't wait for the movie.

New Yorkers are leaving NYC because of one word...

Sincerly,

Yeah, if you like cartoon characters with the "bad statists" looking like Snidely Whiplash. And the glorious uber-capitalists all have square jaws and steely blue eyes. LOL. Trashy book, trashy philosophy, trashy writing.

It gets so annoying around here dealing with senior citizens who have lost their memories.

I loved The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged when I first read them, Ray. I've said so a number of times. I was a typical selfish teenager who really liked hearing about the "virtue of selfishness".

p.s. I'm planning to read it again as soon as I find my misplaced copy of it. It's really a hoot laughing at Rand's execrable writing.

Reading Atlas Shrugged is like watching Plan 9 From Outer Space. It's so bad, it's good.

You would love the Bible.

I have never had a desire to go to NY.

Then stay away from NYC. Don't, however, stay away from upstate NY. Lots of beautiful country and small towns to see there.

Just got back from Lake George in the Adirondacks. Thankfully there was still some color left to see.

A continuation of the Snake "I heard you were dead" Plisskin running gag FTW!

droves eh?

manhattan still seems packed to me.

i have to walk through the pedestrian traffic every day..

sit in a subway at rush hour and tell me you notice the missing people.

One New Yorker on TV last said it best, I can stay and pay beach house in taxes or go down south and keep the beach house.

#74 | Posted by klifferd - did you not read the article? It's people with money - those who probably have "drivers" or take taxis - who are leaving.

New Yorkers moving to Florida, big deal, it has been happening for decades. If you still work for a living, get ready for a big pay cut when you get here though.

"those who probably have "drivers" or take taxis "

nanc, trust me, the people with money also take the subways.

i mean unless you are talking about the ceo level money.

cause EVERYONE in manhattan has money.

if the ceo's are leaving, then its not in droves as they are a minority to begin with.

MOST of NYC is brooklyn and queens, bronx and staten island... those people aren't leaving..

newyorkers for life.

danni you are right.

new yorkers get paid double what they make in florida.

They HAVE to be paid double.

I lived in NY/CT for three years making a nice sum and STILL lost money and forced the company to get me out of there.

Not enough pay to go back there.

It is ridic.

new yorkers get paid double what they make in florida.
#79 | Posted by klifferd

If our expenses were only double that of Florida, it would be no big deal, a wash. But they're more than double that.

That's the price we pay to send all our tax money to the red states I guess.

hc

thats cause we have mayor chargeberg.

he uses the bloomberg company model to run the city.

which means tax every little thing

fine those things you can't outright charge

and nanny the hell out of the citizens.

he needs to go.
why do ny's keep voting for him.

he'll get the 3rd term and ban fun, or at least tax it.

Did you watch the debate last night, Kliff?

I don't know a lot about Bill Thompson, but after last night, I feel a little better about giving him my vote.

I can't vote for Big Mike since he overturned the will of the people to circumvent term limits.

Bill Thompson will be Dinkins 2.0.
The only difference when Al sharpton comes to City Hall he will be 50 lbs. lighter

Bill Thompson will be Dinkins 2.0....

Nothing if not consistent, timbci.

Good to read you.

Hc i did not see the debate.

i was at work until 9... at that point my mind was mush.

technically i'm a connecticut resident anyways.

even though i have an apt in the city.

so i can't really vote in nyc.

i'll check out Bill Thompson though.

I would actually enjoy seeing Thompson get elected and screw up the charter schools. It would be fun to watch Thompson squirm. For the same reason I wanted Freddy Ferrer to win. Neither are ready for prime time

Why Are New Yorkers Fleeing in Droves?

'send me to Hell or New York City, it would about the same to me'

'send me to Hell or New York City, it would about the same to me'

I was in NYC last weekend. Depending on your income, it's either the best, or the worst, city in the world in which to live.

At one point, I was in the middle of Times Square, in the pouring rain. At that moment, I couldn't think of one place in the world I would have rather been.

A few minutes later, on a crosstown bus, I could think of many places I would have rather been.

Depending on your income

How does a cabinet maker fair in NYC? Do those people still like wood or is it all that 'progressive' look.

"How does a cabinet maker fair in NYC?"

I have no idea. I would imagine it's tough to live in The City, but more realistic to live in one of the boroughs.

"Do those people still like wood or is it all that 'progressive' look."

If you want to try it, try it. Anyone moving to NYC is taking a big chance; the margin for error is slim, since the cost of living is so high in comparison.

BTW, I should have termed that "disposable income".

If you have a rent-controlled apartment, the bottom-line numbers are different. Back when the average NYC rent was $900/mo, a friend of mine had a RC apartment for $225.

Yeah...I know...$900...a long time ago. For today, double or triple that.

A few minutes later, on a crosstown bus, I could think of many places I would have rather been.
#90 | Posted by Danforth

cross town busses are the worst.

I usually walk, even if its raining, and get across town before the next bus passes me by.

Yeah...I know...$900...a long time ago. For today, double or triple that.
#93 | Posted by Danforth

In Manhattan, you might, might be able to rent a room somewhere for $900. For $1800 you're talking about a tiny one bedroom, tiny bath, probably no closets, and cockroaches. Once you get past rent stabilization (breaks at $2000), you might lose the cockroaches first, then gain the closet space (barely), then maybe get a shower, then maybe fit a queen size bed in your room.

"Once you get past rent stabilization (breaks at $2000), you might lose the cockroaches"

Yet in the top-30 market I live in, it gets you 2500+ sq ft...cockroaches optional.

"cross town busses are the worst."

Good Godddd!

Friday, I took a crosstown taxi; seven bucks later, I was two blocks further, and realized I could walk faster than ride. And WTF??? It was 3:30pm. I was crossing 50th. Was it schools letting out?!?

Yet in the top-30 market I live in, it gets you 2500+ sq ft...cockroaches optional.
