Clauses that could force health insurers to pay for religious and spiritual healing have slipped into at least two of the healthcare reform bills currently making their way through Congress.

Maybe this is just a sop to the fundie preachifiers. If they can make a buck at it, they'll worship Obamacare like the Second Coming.

This is one of the reasons healthcare is so expensive--- mandated benefits. Real healthcare reform would include competition across state lines and that would get rid of a lot of mandated benefits which most folks have no use and need for.

I know that some on this site want to claim that "faith healing" is something that only Fundamentalist Christians do, and the article focuses on Christian Scientists. But I would think that Herbalists and Native Americans probably fall under this provision too.

No Eb, I'm not against people making a living from producing and selling supplies. Tell me though, is it okay with you that a hospital marks up a Tylenol 300%, or charges $200.00 every time they change the sheets? Why should it cost several times more per night to stay in a hospital than is does to stay at a high-end luxury resort? It doesn't seem to me like the so called 'free market' is working so well if healthcare is costing much more in the U.S. then it does in other countries, for the same or worse results.

certainly not. it is absurd. and my point is that many of the items like I mentioned are already marked up through the roof from the supplier to the hospital. And of course, the hospital marks it up again at a horrible rate.

You had just commented that profits had no business in health.

I think Larry means hospitals should be non profit. Hospitals should put profits back into the hospital not in shareholders hands.

If most people don't have need for a certain kind of care, they won't go GET said care, so it won't add to the cost. People who do need a certain kind of care can get it.

That said, I could see how thinks like counseling with some spiritual basis should be covered. I'm not sure why faith healing would cost anything.

are you referring to what casket distributors charge versus the cost in a funeral home?

be careful......compare apples to apples.

funeral directors have much more overhead. the facilities, autos (a new Limo or Coach costs $75K), etc....

They do okay financially but it isn't THAT much Larry.

Oh, and I can tell you that they WILL negotiate.

Also, funerals are for the living (in reality).

I mean people stand around and say "this is very nice, it is what he/she would have wanted., etc...."

it is just a way to justify decisions they made on the deceased behalf.

And yes, funeral directors make a profit off of that. I couldn't do that for a living.

I have actually been to a funeral directors convention.

Pretty eery when you stand in front of a casket made for a child or at a booth for the products used to put someone back together if they have been mangled in a car wreck or something. they even have "before" and "after" photos.

Yeah, government funding for faith healing. Beliefs that had absolutely no benefit for children like Kara Neumann, Ava Worthington and Kent Schaible; all children who doctors say would have lived if medical care had been provided. The GOVERNMENT will be funding RELIGIOUS faith healing practices and services? Anyone see a constitutional issue with this?
