Taser Maker Admits Cardiac Risk

The maker of Taser stun guns is advising police officers to avoid shooting suspects in the chest with the 50,000-volt weapon, saying that it could pose an extremely low risk of an "adverse cardiac event." The Oct. 12 advisory is the first time that Taser International has suggested there is any risk of a cardiac arrest related to the discharge of its stun gun.

I think a real question that has to be addressed is:

Can the police use pain to enforce compliance? If so, when? What are the guidelines or limitations on the use of pain to enforce compliance?

Taser is today's version of the choke hold.

Cops should use the taser as last resort. Some cops have become taser happy.

If i were to be causing such a scene that the police felt that i needed to be taken down, id still take my chances with a taser over a 9mm. or a Night stick, Or a Choke hold, or Shot gun, Or Police Dog, Or .306 rifle round, or a bean bag out of a shotgun, or a rubber bullet.

Its a toss up with the pepper spray.

I have been stun gunned. (my buddy's girlfriend got one for her graduation present for when she was in college, we had to try it out =P )
I have not been sprayed..

The stun gun took about an hour and a half for all residual effects to go away. Though i was sore the next day.

dont know if a taser is different, but the voltage was similar.

As a practical joke my buddy was stunned on his dick with stun baton. He collapsed and screamed for a long time. I hAve always wanted to mace somebody and tase them when they cannot see.

Cops kill folks with these supposedly non lethal weapons all the time. Cops need to be seriously regulated as to where and how these things are to be used.

Too many lazy, useless, sadistic fuckhead cops out there abusing the shiat out of these things.

Worse than regular criminals sez Spud.

Taser, definitely.

Part of a force continuum for police. Words, batons, pepper spray, taser, hand gun, long gun/shot gun.

Misused, a problem. Properly used, no problem.

Given what the vast majority of our police have to deal with every day, especially with so many people NOT willing to defend themselves, this becomes a non-issue. Just an additional piece of information.

i think the taser is used too much and a lot of times unneccesarily. grandmas have been tased. children under 12 have ben tased. fat out of shape people who can't really resist much have been tased. the tasing cops never get in any trouble. are there any specific guidelines on when to use a taser? doesn't seem like it.

Tasers have their roll as a tool of deterance and compliance as part of the officers tool set.

I would imagine that a fair portion of taser use does not meet the "equal force" use clause.

I would also imagine the psychological impact of the potential use of the taser on the perp is one notch below that of the "shick-shick" sound a shotgun makes when a round is chambered!

The taser surpasses run-of-the-mill police brutality. If the officer is justified to use deadly force, aka being attacked, then taser or pistol is appropriate. But tasing a drunk person for merely mouthing off, etc. is attemped murder.

I'm sure others have said this but if you look at how tasers are used, this is bullshit.

Cops use deadly force when their lives are in danger. In what situation have you heard of a cop using a taser when someone is posing an immediate, credible threat to his life? NEVER.

Pull a gun on a cop or run at one with a knife and you're getting shot. Tasers are used when cops get frustrated because someone isn't listening to them.

What planet are you from. No one has ever been shot with a taser when a gun was an option. The only reason a cop will use a taser is when they can't use their gun. When a cop does use a gun they don't shoot to incapacitate their mark, they unload the gun after the guy is down, just to avoid a lawsuit.
