Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

TROY, N.Y. An Eagle Scout who kept a 2-inch pocketknife in his car has been suspended from his upstate New York high school for bringing the weapon onto school grounds. Now he is concerned about his chances of getting accepted to West Point.

Matthew Whalen was suspended for 20 days for violating the Lansingburgh Central School District's zero-tolerance policy. The 17-year-old senior says he gave the knife to an administrator last month after another student told officials about it.

Details in the story are sketchy. But as much as I detest the zero tolerance mentality, the kid should've known better. If he insisted on breaking rules, he should've done a better job of keeping it to himself, i.e., locked in a utility case in the trunk, not tell anyone, etc.

Stupidity is what got him.

This is just as dumb as the 1st grader getting suspended. A pocket knife is not a weapon so let's all just stop calling them one. It is a tool. Would they suspend him if he had a pair of pliers in his car?

You could do a lot more damage with a large screwdriver than with a pocket knife.

Serves the kids' parents right for living in the bluest of the blue states. Looks like CCNY for him.

Another victory of the bluest blue state. Can't have the kid going to a military academy anyway--don't they have guns there?

Yes, because we all know that no red state school system has any such zero tolerance policy.

"N.Y. superintendent who upheld suspension of Eagle Scout for pocketknife in car won't budge but nowhere in school district's rule book is 'zero tolerance' mentioned."

They don't need one.

I highly recommend watching Rambo again, sir. The knife is not just a tool, but it can sometimes take out a helicopter, repair said damaged helicopter, scare away a fleet of officers with guns and I've heard that some even have optional heat and massage.

This was probably just one of those Mormon Eagle Scouts who get their badges handed over on a timeline. Any real scout should have known better.

Foux bigotry aside, I honestly hope this doesn't negatively impact his chances for West Point. He's on the right path and hopefully administration will take that into account.

Ignorant post flag.

What would happen if a kid was walking to school and glanced down and picked up an arrowhead? Those can be sharp.
