Medea Benjamin and Code Pink are not the spokespersons for the antiwar movement - only one faction of it. Many of us in the movement are dismayed by her wavering stance about troop withdrawal from Afghanistan and distance ourselves from her new stance.
Just as all conservatives or Libertarians are not lock-step in line across all issues, liberals may share general agreement about some things but can differ radically in the details. As long as we - all of us - see only in black and white and categorize each other so starkly, we will remain a divided nation - to the ultimate detriment of us all.
As to Obama and the peace movement: many have stepped back from the fray, believing Obama will magically transform into who he presented himself as being in his campaign and still refuse to see he's continuing his predecessors' wars while initiating his own. Many others are disappointed but seeing the truth now. And others of us paid attention to the words behind his words while he campaigned, did not vote for him and oppose his wars as vehemently as we did when they were Bush's.
I think, if you look deeper, you will find that Medea is not a faun of Obama. She has and, I assume, will continue to oppose his policies if they are in opposition to her beliefs in what is right and just.
Just as I am sure those of you who lean in a different political direction hope that we on the left recognize the subtle and larger differences between individuals on "your side", I would hope you recognize that there is no homogenized "peace movement" or "liberal agenda" and that no one individual represents in totality who we each are - even if there are areas where we strongly do agree.
I admire and agree with much of what Medea and Code Pink do but, in this case, I (and I know of many others also) do not.
