Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

Amy Goodman: A social worker from New York City was arrested last week while in Pittsburgh to participate in the G-20 protests, then subjected to an FBI raid this week at his home -- all for using Twitter. Elliot Madison faces charges of hindering apprehension or prosecution, criminal use of a communication facility and possession of instruments of crime. He was posting to a Twitter feed ... publicly available information about police activities around the G-20 protests, including information about where police had been ordered to disperse protesters.

Creepy.

The G20 protesters are a little nutty, but I hope the judiciary sides with them in this case.

what this person did is NO DIFFERENT than using the Speed Trap APP on an iPHONE.

This is an area of law that needs some definition.. tweeting is not exactly private, anymore than facebook is.. you're essentially posting information publicly..

But on the other hand.. I don't like the govt arresting people for giving out information.. that seems like a very slippery slope to be standing on..

slope my ass. its a 90 degree angle. If the FBI can get away with with this its NOT out of the realm of possibility to have them Demand the bills/contracts/APPS downloaded history for ALL iPHONE users to screen for the Speed Trap APP. We either have a free press and Speech or we don't.

The cops where I grew up used to set speed traps and then give tickets to people who flashed their headlights at oncoming traffic.

Then, when you went to the HQ to pay the ticket, they gave you a dirty look and a receipt for half the amount you paid.

Cops are crooks.

They are never your friends.

Even as they save your life, they are busy thinking of something to charge you with.

re: Cops are crooks.

I've known several cops who were my friends, and not crooks. But then I've only known a few, and you seem to have an omniscient pedestal with which to amplify your anecdotal tale to universal proportion.

So what do I know?

The cops where I grew up used to set speed traps and then give tickets to people who flashed their headlights at oncoming traffic.

I remember a case like this went to the USSC several years ago. The USSC ruled that flashing headlights is a form of free speech. They wrote that someone could not be cited for verbally relaying the information about a speed trap and could therefore not be cited for relaying the same information with flashing headlights.

I'll bet the cops in that town don't do that anymore.

So what do I know?

Wisgod-
You must realize that your personal dislike of me has overwhelmed your sense. I was criticizing this post:

Cops are crooks.

They are never your friends.

Perhaps you should take a little breather.

St Louis County has over 100 municipalities and they all have a traffic court and they all plea down to a parking ticket ($$$). I'm surprised the insurance companies don't oppose it. I do. Guilty or Not. Points on your license or not.

My speedometer reads fast so I get the same sensation of exceeding the limit without doing so. But I've also moved away from the craziness. What's a couple of minutes, really?

What's a couple of minutes, really?

My sentiment exactly

Perhaps you should take a little breather.

I was kidding. Perhaps you should get a skin graft. Something thicker than what you currently have.

Wisgod-
I understand. The actual intellectual content of a thread is beyond your scope. You stick to the personal snipe as your only area of competent expertise.

And you do that very well, so my apologies.

This one is kind of gray actually.

He was posting to a Twitter feed (or tweeting, as it is called) publicly available information about police activities around the G-20 protests, including information about where police had been ordered to disperse protesters.

I don't know about that one as the G20 is international and an terrorist target, so paranoia is going to be extra high and he was posting real time information on security movements.

And you do that very well, so my apologies.

Beween the tears from you and Woke, you could extinguish those wild fires out in Cali.

But then I've only known a few, and you seem to have an omniscient pedestal with which to amplify your anecdotal tale to universal proportion.

Of course there are good cops. I was being way over the top and probably should not have posted that comment.

I base my expectations of police officers on working with them many years ago as an EMT.

I found the young officers who had crim degrees were usually pretty good and you could rely on them in a pinch.

The older veteran beat cops were another story. They would sometimes escalate situations intentionally to be able to administer a legal beat down on some 'perp' or maybe just some crazy homeless guy they didn't like. We would get the call after it went down and transport the unfortunate pile of human hamburger to the hospital for a few bandages before he went to the pokey. I also saw cops steal property and drugs from suspects and lie on police reports. If you have to ask why I kept my mouth shut about it, you really do have a fairy tale view of street work.

My favorite cop was a 6'5" black officer whose particular talent was clearing yards of vicious dogs so that we could gain entry to houses from which cardiac emergencies had been called in.

His technique involved fearless physical intimidation and the occasional boff on the nose of the obstreperous canine.

The State Troopers (this was in FL) were the worst. All they cared about was getting the wrecks cleared so they could get back to their radar traps.

A trooper arrested one of our EMTs once for not getting a woman out of a car quickly enough. The EMT extricated her correctly on a spine board, but the trooper wanted "his" highway cleared and arrested our guy for disobeying his order to yank the lady out of the car.

So, I have had a little experience, but I will apologize to any straight up cops out there for my previous comment.

Amy Goodman is as liberal as a person can be. She is a perfect example of a wingbat. She is, however, criminally harmless. I can't see her breaking any law and she wouldn't hurt anyone. She just distributes her rhetoric and 'information'. The Feds harassing her is only helping her cause and giving her more creditability.

I don't like Goodman but I hope she keeps on keeping on. Go Goodman.

Also, the headline should identify the fact that this is Amy Goodman. She's not just any 'G-20 protester'.

twitter smitter

Sorry. The word "Twitter" just sounds swishy and stupid. But maybe that's just me.

I agree 100%. I don't know how a grown man could say that he "twitters".

I had a dishwasher installed once. The installer was a big burly looking guy. After he installed it he was telling me how quiet that model was. He said when the water was running it sounding like someone was "tinkling". I had to stifle a laugh.

Now come on -- why didn't he just say, "Taking a leak"? My grandmother used to say "tinkle"

I don't twitter. I don't like even typing it.

You "tweet" on Twitter.

I definitely don't tweet on twitter.

You "tweet" on Twitter.

Thank you. I think you're tweet too, tweety. Let'th go to a bar.

Why has it been predominantly conservatives who have created a constant tension and legal battle against those Americans who strive to maintain civil rights, state's rights, freedom of speech, and right to bear arms?

When did this over zealousness against the public become a way of life for conservatives?

I think maybe you were taking him a little to literally.

I don't twitter. I don't like even typing it.

I refuse to be a part of any of that shit. Facebook and all.

Which sort of sucks since a local microbrewery has started advertising their pub crawls exclusively on twitter.

Needless to say, I'm torn.

When did this over zealousness against the public become a way of life for conservatives?

Maybe when the public became a bunch of amoral heathens hell bent on destroying this country with their immoral ways?s

It's a good thing conservatives hate big government.

My grandmother used to say "tinkle"

My mother did too. If we were out shopping she'd say she needed to go find a ladies room because she "had to tinkle." She was the only one I ever knew who used that word. Can't remember if my grandmother did or not, though. Guess we can now add your grandmother to the list of "ladies who tinkle." LOL Kind of sweet, though, the way they were often "so proper."

Prosecution of the totally innocent in this country is an industry in its own right. It is built around the plea bargain. Pile on ludicrous interpretations of old law until the defendant faces 30 years for minding his own business. Another form of Facism.

My apologies to the members of the female gland.

I haven't even posted on this thread. Looks like GoatbOoB is getting in some last-minute stalking before killfiles arrive.

I haven't even posted on this thread.

duh. Until the first post, that's always true.

You sound like the people on this rig (and other places I've worked -- and I know other techies know this attitude) who say, "It worked an hour ago". No shit. Everything works until it breaks. Likewise, you haven't posted on a thread until your first post.

You're brilliant, dull.

I like twat. If it was called 'twatting' I'd probably do it.

A man has to have principles.

You could call it twatter and when you send a message its called a 'queef'.

it's the new America where you are arrested for trying to help people follow a cop's directions - - where people were told to disperse to.

I wonder if there will ever be an investigation to the illegal police brutality, activity and use of sound weapons, crackdown on lawful assembly at the G20, the illegal curfew enforcement crackdown in the city of Oakland and raid on UPitt and use of tear gas trapping innocent bystanders between floors.

the headline should identify the fact that this is Amy Goodman. She's not just any 'G-20 protester'.

Sure, they investigate it, the city pays a few millions, but it seldom makes the national news.

Not surprisingly, our police operating as jack-booted thugs is more "newsworthy" than our taxes paying to clean up the mess after our police act like jack-booted thugs.

nlgseattle.org
Seattle paid $1M to settle 1999 WTO police misconduct claims
LA paid $4M to settle 2000 DNC police misconduct claims
Not sure about more recent cases, they may still be pending.

So what do I know?

It's been demonstrated on several occasions that you don't know anything.

I haven't even posted on this thread. Looks like GoatbOoB is getting in some last-minute stalking before killfiles arrive.

what are you going to do after the killfiles?

with goatman invisible to you, who will you aimlessly follow around hoping to get some pitty abuse out of?

what will you do with the 6 hours of the day you're not sleeping or eating?

The local traffic radio station relays information about HOV lane checks and speed traps all the time.

That aint illegal.

Wot this protester did should also not be illegal.

Good eye, Amy.

Be Well.

speaking truth or in this case reporting it is fast becoming a no-no in this country...well unless you're speaking it about this admin's adversaries.

I'll bet the cops in that town don't do that anymore.

#7 | Posted by goatman at 2009-10-07 03:17 PM

I bet they still do. Since when are cops concerned with the law?

Why has it been predominantly conservatives who have created a constant tension and legal battle against those Americans who strive to maintain civil rights, state's rights, freedom of speech, and right to bear arms?

What planet have you been living on? Conservatives are in favor of States rights, freedom of speech and the right to bear arms. It is organizations (on the left) like the ACLU that try to tear down crosses (freedom of speach, and religion) and want no-one to be able to own a gun.
The left calls anything from the right "hate Speech" and then dumps vitriol and hatred over those who do not agree with them.

The left calls anything from the right "hate Speech" and then dumps vitriol and hatred over those who do not agree with them.

That's an unfair assessment.

there are millions of reasonable lefties.

there are also millions of people like montebore, dullifidian, drunk sarvis and dummi who can't see the fucking forest for the trees.

label these people properly and don't be guilty of the same ignorance as they (and their republican counterparts) are.

"there are also millions of people like montebore, dullifidian, drunk sarvis and dummi..."

4 outstanding lefties indeed.

People that use twitter are like people who use face book. They stick their shit out there then wonder what the hell went wrong when somebody they didn't want to notice did.

The real truth is that if you stick your head up like that, you risk the possibility that someone might chop it off.
