A video posted to YouTube a few weeks ago shows Fox News Channel host Glenn Beck having Vicks applied under his eyes in order to cry on cue for a photo shoot.

Really, there is nothing new about stagging sets for photo shoots.

You should see what thye put on the Bunnies to make them, uh, wel, drip from certain spots.

I can see pointing out the fakeness of his show or sincerity as a whole, but for a photo shoot?

What did you expect? For him to sit there and think about Rush ass pounding him for 20 minutes in order to conjure up a tear or 2 for a planned photo?

I think Beck is a cancer to society, but come on. This is done all the time.

It IS a story when a publication alters someone to make them more menacing looking (or otherwise flagrantly unflattering) to create an effect the subject wouldn't want. I think Condie Rice had that done to her - and IIRC it wasn't a staged shoot like with Beck here.

The desired effect for both Beck and those involved in the shoot was to portray tears. The shot was 'over the top' as is most of Beck's personna... a drama queen sort. It was not a "candid" shot of Beck caught in the moment.

I dislike beck very much. But to say he is an idiot or is retarded, while fun, is not very accurate, and it let's him off the hook too easy.

The problem is that he is not an idiot! He appears to know exactly what he's doing and is being handsomely compensated for it. So you say, well ok, he's not stupid but he is an evil opportunist. True. I agree with that one.

And Americans, most of whom are not idiots either, continue to have a hard time dealing with moral abstractions, so they get sucked in, looking for some moral purity that doesn't exist. Good catch. I had that in mind as well.

We also see it in so many celebrity shots... everything from air brushing out zits & wrinkles to whitening teeth to actually thinning the person. I think Katie Couric was 'thinned' in the past when she was readying for her CBS debut.

As to whether one believes Beck to be a fraud, that's another issue. I think at least they'd have sufficient intellectual integrity to see this photo shoot for what it is.

You said it was used to keep fruits and other foods looking especially tasty for a photo shoot. Remember? Photo shoots require all sorts of props to achieve the desired result.

Beck's image is one of being 'over the top.' That's exactly what this photo shoot was out to capture. Whether it took Vicks or any of the other 'creative' methods other DR folks offered... they needed to achieve that certain look.

How hard is that to fathom?

If you want to debate his actual views, fine. But this is a photo shoot and these sorts of things are routinely done to achieve the desired outcome.

Welcome to the world of commercial photography.

I've got a great shot of myself in mid-air, in the middle of a parachute jump. Of the hundreds of shoots I've done, it was doubtless one of the most memorable.

For the shoot, I spent about an hour and forty-five minutes upside down on a specially constructed pommel horse with 3 jump experts coaching me. In a studio.

On topic...if I needed to cry, the technique is easy: don't blink. Beck is obviously an amateur.

I doubt seriously he is an amateur--how would he look on camera as he tried to cry without blinking? He knew exactly what to do, and how to do it---he is a practiced professional. If his tears on his shows were real, all he would have to do is recall one of the tearful episodes and the tears would come naturally. All of his tears have been fake. All who believe his tears are real have been duped.

Last week my sister told me that her daugher had a first date and the guy sat in front of the house and called her on the cell phone to let her know he was there! I couldn't believe it. My brother-in-law saw what was going on. He took my niece's cell phone and called him back. The guy answered the phone and my bil told him if he wanted to date his daughter, he needed to come to the door and inside the house to get her. I wish I could have seen the look on his face.

I have raised 5, who are now grown......and now have 7 grandchildren, ages 1-18, and we are raising our nearly 4 year old granddaughter, whom I spend nearly every retired hour with.

And if by some chance they ever end up getting married a few years down the road, I'm sure this story will be retold many times at the dinner table whenever the family gets together for the holidays.
