Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

A motorcyclist has been banned from the roads after being caught doing what is thought to be the fastest speed ever recorded on a Scottish road. Hairdresser Neil Purves was detected by police as he travelled at 166mph on a 60mph stretch of the A702 near West Linton in the Scottish Borders. His guilty plea meant he topped the previous Scottish record held by car dealer Jason McAllister, who was jailed for five months in 2003 at Forfar Sheriff Court for driving his BMW M3 at 156.7 mph. The British record was set by Tim Brady for 172mph in a 3.6-litre Porsche 911 Turbo.

My top speed was just a little over 120 mph on my son's FZ1. 90 mph is the fastest I have had my Venture going, that of course was while riding alone. Anything over 80 or so earns a helmet slap if my wife is aboard.

In '74-I had a '72 Plymouth Roadrunner-
Big block-a 383 with a 4-speed/w slapstick shifter-and 3-2 barrel carbs.
The speedo went up to 150MPH-"pegged" at about 180-I broke the needle on it 3 times by going far enough past 180 to break off the needle.

My favorite game with the car-every time someone got in the car that didn't know how fast it was-I'd get it up 80 on the center carb-down shift to 3rd-pop the clutch-and open up all 3 carbs wide.
Quite a few people had to clean out their drawers when they rode with me.
You wouldn't know it now, though-I drive a '97 Buick Park Avenue-rather mildly.....

105 on a Honda Magna. Ran out of straight-away. I think it'll go faster. I'll have to wait until I get new tires though.

Record speed huh? Explains the sudden rise in vinyl sales. I WAS happy about it, but if they are making meth out of it I hardly approve.

I used to drive a 1991 Yamaha FZR 600. I had that thing up to 125mph for about 10 seconds before my nerve ran out.

I hit 170+ in a Mits 3000VR4 in Kansas on I35 and at that speed scared the crap out of me. Not sure what the fine for that would have been.

Bullshit alert! Watch where you step!

"1972 Plymouth Road Runner

As with all other car companies, the 1972 model year was a vast change from previous years. The exterior of the 1972 Plymouth Road Runner looked virtually the same as the 1971 production save for a new grill and optional fender tape stripes. However, it was under the hood where the major changes were taking place. Gone were the high compression big bore motors. Instead were more emissions friendly and gas conservative drivetrains. The Hemi and Six Pack were now extinct as were aggressive gear rations.

The Road Runner base model included a bored out 383 which netted a 400 cid motor. Running 8.2 compression this motor was rated at 255hp (NET). However, a low compression 440 was available if you ordered the "GTX" package. This package included special badges on the side of the car and on the trunk lid. "

And unless that Road Chicken was fitted with wings, not a chance you kept the rear on the pavement above 150. See the reasons for the creation of the Super Bird with its pointy snout and the ungainly wing.

Zot, you forgot to mention that the 383 was not available in '72 it had been changed to the 400 and that the six pack was a 440 option not a 383 nor was a 4 speed available with the 383.

re: #5...Schmanch...my moment of vehicular stupidity was 115+ mph on a tubby '91 Honda CBR1000F on PCH north of Santa Barbara. I backed off when I started feeling oscillation in the frame. I imagine high-siding around 115mph will harsh your buzz.

Too Old to Rock 'n' Roll: Too Young to Die

The old Rocker wore his hair too long,
wore his trouser cuffs too tight.
Unfashionable to the end --- drank his ale too light.
Death's head belt buckle --- yesterday's dreams ---
the transport caf' prophet of doom.
Ringing no change in his double-sewn seams
in his post-war-babe gloom.

Now he's too old to Rock'n'Roll but he's too young to die.

He once owned a Harley Davidson and a Triumph Bonneville.
Counted his friends in burned-out spark plugs
and prays that he always will.
But he's the last of the blue blood greaser boys
all of his mates are doing time:
married with three kids up by the ring road
sold their souls straight down the line.
And some of them own little sports cars
and meet at the tennis club do's.
For drinks on a Sunday --- work on Monday.
They've thrown away their blue suede shoes.

Now they're too old to Rock'n'Roll and they're too young to die.

So the old Rocker gets out his bike
to make a ton before he takes his leave.
Up on the A1 by Scotch Corner
just like it used to be.
And as he flies --- tears in his eyes ---
his wind-whipped words echo the final take
and he hits the trunk road doing around 120
with no room left to brake.

And he was too old to Rock'n'Roll but he was too young to die.
No, you're never too old to Rock'n'Roll if you're too young to die.

The best part about going 166 mph down the highway is that if you plow into something big....you won't feel a thing!!!

He may have had transplanted the mill.

You are right though. The 383 was never available with the 'six-pack' option of 3 two-barrel carbs. They made a 440 sixpack option and they made a 340 six-pack option but not 383. Not saying they couldn't be added afterward though.

I'm a huge Mopar fan (67-71) I had my first RoadRunner in high school (1988). It was a 69. Originally a 383 car (4-spd) and somewhere along the way someone put a 440 in it.

As for the 1972 hitting 180 with a 383, I just can't see that. It just doesn't create the horsepower needed.

Sorry frank. I'm not calling you a liar but that doesn't compute.

Nanc? Look, I'm pretty mean, but even I don't call Nanc "the old Duster."

You asshole. You owe me one mouthfull of beer.

I once go my 1973 Saab 96 with four on the tree (V4 ford engine) up to 70 till the hood blew off and looked like a piece of paper blowing in the wind in my rear view...i grew up into a 10 cyl M5 and drive slower..the four door M5 can make your whole fam soil themselves but I dont do that to them anymore..

Never heard of a speedo that would do this. Is there a mechanical link (as opposed to magnetic) between the cable and the needle in this particular speedometer?

Larry

You got me.

Toys to scale Larry...are they really a "Auto sport"?
I'm going to stay with Drag racing and my M5...

They actually put a 426 HEMI in the Darts and Dusters for 1969. They weren't for the street, but they could be ordered by anyone. They were 10 second monsters!

As for the Duster (and the Dart), I believe the biggest mill was the 340 in 1970-1972.

The Speed Trials on the Salt Flats would be my guess.

My Puch Moped once hit 35 mph when I was 14.

What was the biggest they ever put in the old Duster?

Almost forgot, they went to the 360 sometime in 73 or 74. By then the smog equipment had all but killed the performance.

UPDATE: Scratch that about the Hemi Duster. It was the HEMI 'Barracuda' and Dart (69).

360 is my final answer, although I'm not sure of the specs on any Mopar after 1972.

A friend of mine bought a '70 Roadrunner back in the eighties. He didn't want his parents to know that he bought it so he stored it at my house. In exchange, I got to drive it whenever I wanted to. I loved that car.
Fuel efficiency thrills me more than horsepower these days though.
Did about 120 mph once and the thing was just purring along real smooth. It had a 383, 4 barrel, 4 speed pistol grip.

...and the US record of 230 mph was set by Chico Fernandez in a 75 Chevette delivering Domino's Pizza.

And Oorah, that's one of the greatest songs ever.

Will Ninkasi Tricerehops do, or do I have to start a new batch?

my yamaha maxim (82)did 130,The cops called it felony flight with reckless endangerment(2 yrs min),I didn't even know they were chasing me.Pleaded to resisting arrest, got off fairly easy all things considered

I had a 1986 Isuzu Impulse Turbo, rear wheel drive. Bought it new. The car was crap, all in all, and was HORRIBLE in the snow, but the son of a bitch would move. Spedometer went to 140, I believe. I had it up to 115 on a quiet stretch of highway and it had plenty of power left. Started thinking about death, so I slowed down.

Although the car was rumored to go up to 950 mph (hey, that's what Joe Isuzu said!), I never really tested it. www.carlustblog.com

Fastest I ever went on the ground was in a French TGV train.
My GPS said 178 mph.
Very smoooooooooooth ride.

Drudge sure is full of badasses. We've got a guy who must have taken the speed limiter out of his VR4 and drove 170MPH, we've got Frank2.5 with the RoadRunner that never existed, and another guy who drives an M5. I don't know about you, but I'm impressed.

I've done 152 in my 2002 WRX, and 130 on my 2008 Suzuki SV-650.

I did 53.75 in my electric death box. Until my last steak dinner made me too big to fit in it.

Any one else happen to notice that when you hit the speed of light everything gets real dim?

Speeding police officer fired
Trooper who rode alongside at 147 mph suspended 5 days
Tuesday, August 25, 2009 3:08 AM
BY JOHN FUTTY AND ELIZABETH GIBSON
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
A Gahanna police officer was fired yesterday for riding a motorcycle at 149 mph while off duty, but a state trooper who was riding with him at 147 mph will keep his job.
Both men entered guilty pleas in Licking County Municipal Court early this month to speeding on I-70 and received identical sentences.

But the similarities end with how their employers disciplined them.

Officer Christopher Thomas, 33, received a letter yesterday from the Gahanna safety director telling him that his "intentional violation of the law and disregard for public safety is evidence that you are not suited to be a police officer."

Meanwhile, Trooper Jason E. Highsmith, 35, learned that he will receive a five-day unpaid suspension and be reassigned by the patrol.

"Termination was recommended, but we came to an agreement with the union," said Lt. Tony Bradshaw, a patrol spokesman.

The patrol's internal investigation suggested firing the trooper for "conduct unbecoming" an officer, but the Ohio State Troopers Association negotiated for Highsmith to be reassigned outside the Columbus district instead, Bradshaw said.

Poor Bastard must have just finished a plate of HAGAS, an was trying to get to a Restroom.............

Celery,
Do you know the difference between "an" and "and", stupid?
Was you a childrens left behinds?

#41 - Yeah, Smeg, the dimness was weird, but even weirder was that, when I stopped, all my gray hair was gone and my pants were too loose and I had to take a final that I hadn't studied for.

We had a guy in the OR once that was clocked by the cops at 135 on I-35 south of KC and dropped his bike at 110 while being pursued. He lived and didn't break anything, amazingly. He was, however, nicknamed 'the human road rash". Spent about 6 hours picking gravel out of his dumb ass.

My duster came with a 340 cubic inch marine race motor from the factory. All aluminum, save the heads and bore sleeves, 12.5-1 compression. About 500 were built. I beleive a 383 was available that year.
Off the line, it destroyed hemi's, big block vettes, and everything other than the fastest of bikes. The speedo stopped at 160.
My chevelle/malibu, only built in '70, had the first generation lt1 vette motor(ob-1967), with .5 higher compression.
You dont turn the wheel at 150mph. And in the duster, dont hit the rocks on the pavement, you'll get air real quick. Under 2500lb with the motor, no back seat, no spare, door panels, etc.

Couple lawmen just lost their jobs here for running 152mph on their bikes not too long ago. One a state trooper.

I've seen videos of cops in pursuit of (and I use that word very loosely) Hyabusa's doing north of 200 mph. One cop sitting in the right seat took a picture of the radar unit showing 197mph. I'll admit the videos showing the incredible speed are something else, but I'll stick to watching it on a screen.

Note in this video that the rider wheelies ... until he hits 140mph!

101CHAIRBORNE......The difference between AN/AND is as far I am concerned is a Fucking "D"...If that is all you can complain about sorry, English is not my favorite language. What I am good at is educating you Assholes about your Racist Republican Party an to remind the people that appear on this site that your crap will not go unchallenged. I don't every remember you challenging any FACTS that I have presented just your need to play the Language Police.....Well Dick Tracy "FUCK YOU" Look it up, its in the dictionary!!!

I've taken my Mustang to 131mph.

"Your Honor, I was simply testing a new super-strong-hold hairspray on behalf of my clients."

Hope he tucked in his kilt.

140 on a country road with little whoops in a porsche carrera, that was way too fast.

I think we were really stupid and the only reason we didn't come off the road cause it had that large whale fin on the back which we thought was only for looks, but I guess it worked (I was NOT diving, I was in the back seat and two guys in the front screaming. If his dad knew we would never be allowed to drive it again. This was 1975-76. The car cost 24,000 back then.

#48 That video is a fake
