U.S. May Ban Insurers of Iran's Cargo

The Obama administration is working up new ways to disrupt the Iranian economy to dissuade the country from its nuclear program. One would blacklist global insurance companies and freeze their U.S. assets if they cover cargo headed for Iran.

My only question: Will the right wing support a repeal of the Bush tax cuts to pay for it? This is national security after all.

Iran is pretty much bitching US as a Country. Supplying weapons and fighters to kill our soldiers in Iraq. Trying to create nuclear weapons, secret nuke facilities. If you think Iran "is not a threat" like Joe Biden then your fucking nuts.

This idea is essentially a blockade without it actually being a blockade. That is a dangerous area and no international shipping company is going to want to enter those waters without insurance.

Which is why it won't happen. Oil is involved with virtually every sector of the economy, from industry, to transport, and even production of plastics and a ton of other things. I'd bet that even a bunch of the materials that the environuts use for their "green initiatives" have some parts or components somewhere that are made from oil or oil based products.

I'm not saying it shouldn't happen. We need to take a stand somewhere and not allow Iran to go further, because the alternative quite likely is all of Israel's major cities basking in the warm glow of mushroom clouds. I just don't think that the people of the world, much less the United States, are willing to endure over $5/gallon gas prices. We didn't get to that last year and look at all the Hell that raised...

Unlike Israel and the United States, Iran hasn't attacked anyone in the last 200 years and is unlikely to do so. We gave Saddam Hussein chemical weapons technology in support of his attacks on Iran, which were not going very well. Iran is rightly afraid of us and planning for the worst. A reasonable outcome would be for them to give up their weapons programs when Israel gives up theirs. Israel is busy attacking and taking land from Arabs. Iran may talk tough, but they haven't engaged in similar aggressive behavior.

Such a ban would be interesting, to say the least. Right now China is probably (IIRC) the biggest importer or Iranian oil. Until they build a land pipeline from Iran to China, they need to use shipping. Guess they will have to start doing the insuring. And how would that ripple through their economy?

But I think it is a good idea. China is dead set against any action(s) toward Iran primarily because of economic reasons. If we want to change that, we need to impact China economically. But we can't do it in any obvious manner - or risk a trade war. So oblique actions like this sound good.
