Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

Longtime political analyst and democratic strategist James Carville says that after years of consulting, he has found the political office that he wants: mayor of New Orleans. The only thing standing in his way is the City Charter, which stipulates that a candidate must reside in the city for at least five years.

I'd hate to run against him. Carville is one of the most dogged and intelligent campaigners I've ever witnessed. A brilliant man in that respect.

He would have to run against Brad Pitt.

Beauty vs the Beast

I have no skin in the game really as we live in Jefferson Parish and are about to move to Baton Rouge, but Carville would be awesome. Of course anything would be better than Nagin, he has gone crazy. We own two boat houses on the lake where we have to lease the rights of the space over the water from the city. Essentially you lease the space for 30 years and the immovables (ie the buildings) are yours. Thus, you can sell the immovable and transfer the lease to the purchaser who steps in your shoes. Since Katrina the leases have expired, but we have completely renovated the structures and kept on paying property taxes. Nagin has refused to sign the leases as he feels that it isn't fair that a certain demographic (i.e., upper-crust whites) tend to own these boat houses. He has set up a commission to look into what the city can do to make sure people of all classes can enjoy the properties. He has gone completely crazy. I am willing to sell the houses to any person of any race as long as they have the cash whenever he signs the lease, it has nothing to do with race.

I cook a turkducken every Easter for my family, taxman. LOVE cajun cooking.

We love it in Louisiana Diablo. Every time I tell someone here that I am from Dallas they ask why I chose to remain in Louisiana instead of moving back to Texas. The answer is simple: there is actually culture in Louisiana, the people are nicer, the cooking, and the laid back lifestyle. No one here is trying to be something they are not, very different from Dallas which is the home of the $30,000 millionare.

Will he continue to make it a chocolate city if he wins?

Will he continue to make it a chocolate city if he wins?

Sure, just with a fresh sprinkling of nuts on the top.

"Chocolate cities and vanilla suburbs."

- George Clinton

hed be the ugliest mayor of any city. haha

I think Carville is brilliant, albeit probably a little nuts..

New Orleans would be as much or even more of a challenge than Rudy faced in New York. Rudy changed the face of a city when everyone else said it was impossible.. Rudy is also brilliant and probably a little nuts..

I actually think Carville may be the type of guy to get er done down there. I say this despite the fact that there's almost nothing politically that I agree with Carville on.. but the real problems facing New Orleans really supersede politics. I used to live in NOLA.. its a pathetic city.

Carville would do an excellent job... he would be back at home and with his far reaching connections, he could rebuild this city from within and bring it back even stronger... a 'no nonsense' approach is needed without the typical political strings and I think that he could pull it off.. they should step up to the plate and waive the '5 year' rule.. hey, if Massachusettes can make it a rubbery proposition rule, why not NO..
they really need someone like Carville..
where can we write and petition?????

The City Council will have none of it, Carville is a threat to all of them.

NMG NO - I appreciate your perspective on most issues, even if we're at different points on the political spectrum. Yep, Carville is a little nuts, but you're right, he's also brilliant. I even tend to agree with you about Giuliani's time in New York.

And you're for sure right that the problems in NOLA supercede politics. A good friend lived in or near there for many years, and I visited a couple of times. So troubled, so many deep-seated problems, yet it's one of the most amazing cities in the world. The music, the food, the architecture, the history, the crazy patchwork of cultures, the bon-temps-roulez outlook on life, the freakin' drive-thru daiquiri stands (please don't drink and drive!) - it's just an incredible place and well worth the effort to save it. I wept when I saw what Katrina had done to it.

Strong leadership is needed to nurse the city back to health, and Carville strikes me as someone who can cut through the bullshit and get things done.

"Drag $100 bills through trailer parks, there's no telling what you'll find."

Sure sounds like a guy with respect for hard-working, downtrodden and struggling people.

The thing is Carville would probably win considering NOLA has a history of voting for crazy bald dudes (see Ray Nagin).

^.^

The answer to Carville's problem is simple ... wait the five years that the law requires, then run for the damn office. Basically what this comes down to is a person whining that he can't break the law and go after something he wants.

All of that aside, I think Carville could do some good in New Orleans. He's got to be a lot better than the current crop of public officials, who along with people up through and including the FEMA director, totally bungled the response to Katrina. And then after that, Nagin's "chocolate city" reference ... yeah, New Orleans needs a new
mayor, and a better man in that post, and Carville would be it, despite the fact that I disagree with his politics.

That being said, his politics wouldn't change much, because Nagin is already a Liberalista, so you'd be replacing one Liberalista with another.

The difference would be that Carville is actually respectable, while Nagin is laughable.

go right ahead cobra head...

you couldnt do any worse than the joke thats been there for awhile..

and if you dont watch carvile and his wife on cnn on sunday morning I believe every other sunday you are really missing something.
its maybe the most entertaining news shit on the air.
when he talks mary will stare a hole through his cromedome and when she talks he lowers his head like a little puppy.
I highly recommend and since its on cnn you KNOW it has to be good..

I think Carville should fight Elliott Spitzer in naked bunjee paintball to see who would be Mayor. May the Handsomest Man win!

If Carville's so brilliant what happened to Gore and Kerry? Not that anyone except SCOTUS could stop the Feeney/Bush vote tampering in Florida.

ACORN was helping Bush/Cheney campaign?

Why not?

If you are from Arkansas you can run for Senator in New York.

If you are from NYC you can run for Senator in Minnesota.

It isn't where you are from, but where you are. Hillary moved to New York. Al moved to Minnesota.

so you agree they are both carpetbaggers?

I could be wrong but I don't think Carville was involved with the Gore and Kerry campaigns. He is a Clintonista.

Gore had Donna Brazille as CM. Kerry had Mary Beth Cahill.

so you agree they are both carpetbaggers?

Most certainly.

If the levees let go again, he can stick his big squash of a head in the hole and save the city.

The only wonderfully good thing to see James Carvell and his pal Bill Clinton...running for.. is...their lives!!!

Carville just needs to move his happy ass to NO and he too can be Mayor. Certainly, can't be any worse than the idiot that is currently residing in the Chocolate City chair.

Carville just needs to move his happy ass to NO and he too can be Mayor.

He moved to New Orleans a while ago. He is a professor at Tulane now.
