Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

Researchers from the University of Birmingham say they have succeeded in splitting electrons, despite assumptions the procedure could never be done.

Electrons are not fundamental particles.

It's turtles all the way down.

Perhaps it is also turtles all the way up.

The universe is a component of something even larger, which is part of something even larger. . .

They showed a photo of one of the electrons out on a date with a proton to the other electron.

But is it stable? If not, I fail to understand what the point of it is. The forum is open.

So says the grendel from our corner of the multiverse...

Can they get my sister in law to split? She's driving me crazy.

But is it stable?

Of course not! It's as "stable" as the "birthers" & "tea baggers"

I remember this from back in early 2009 when it first came out. The electron was not "split" in quite the same way a composite particle like a proton can be "split" into quarks (bound into jets of other composite particles). Under extreme conditions, the charge and angular momentum of an electron become separated and behave as if they are two distinct "quasiparticles". The electron hasn't really been split in two, though, since the quasiparticle pair is a bound state.

No but they can stick her in a box and make her both alive and dead at the same time (as long as you don't look at her).

Incredible! Can I call 'em or what? Perfect timing frank -- just perfect! Thanks!

LOL

Is there a commercial or military application of this? Or is thie jsut academic?

Can we count on NOTHING anymore?

Honestly, zat -- if typos upset you so much that you are banging your head on the desk, you need to take a break. Ordinary people post here, not the perfect divine entities whose level of intelligence only you have obtained.

Oh -- and while you are taking that sabbatical from us mere mortals, maybe you can learn to spell without a spellchecker yourself. Start with "goatman". It's easier if you break it down into two words: goat and man.

Good luck with that!

was it a banana electron?

So this is some form of linear interferometery? Seems very similar to the interpolated resonance experiment you posted yesterday.

I'm trying to find that old data on photon collection outside of fiber - the quantum lattice appears to be predictable at any temperature using any material.

Oh, wait.. the spacial and spectral modes are not predictable. Perhaps phase conjoining would solve that? So, conditioning the photon into pairs makes easier encryption?

Redlight, do you just spew technobabble for fun? You've done it a few times now.

Of course not! It's as "stable" as the "birthers" & "tea baggers"

It is difficult to get all of the subtleties educated folk display. But do I understand when I'm being spoken down to.

Photon pairing for quantum entanglement requires a number of modalities to be qualified. I'm not sure how to explain phase conjoining - basically, it's when one atom corresponds to the next, which "encourages" a stable pattern of orbits and phase-corrected similar atoms. When I mentioned fabrication regarding encryption on the prior Zatoichi thread there apparently are materials which naturally "encourage" conjoining, thus a COMPUTER. When I state that the "form" of atomic displacement is directly related to the entanglement (such as the resonance inference imaging), it's mostly to show that I won't help you to encrypt. Goatman displays interest in lightspeed, so there is someone who can.

If imagination is too "babblesque" then I'm sorry for that. My education is nil and I don't really read much on quantum whatnot, but I'm always open to what people are sharing. Otherwise, I'll leave this thread to you smart guys and go back to scrubbing the carpet (which a hot & wet Roomba should be doing).

but I'm always open to what people are sharing.

Right. As long as you agree with it. If you don't, the person who shared is a stupid hick etc. You said so yourself.

So I guess this has no practical application then.

Sharing is caring.. but theoretical physics seems to be verboten for the lesser-involved.

You know I'm not that much of a dick, and just as much of a stupid hick as the next guy.

You hurt me, goat. Look, I'm getting some greenery tonight - maybe I'll actually get too stoned to care?

Spent Saturday at Argonne National Laboratory's open house.

Got a behind the scenes tour of the ATLAS linear accelerator.

They don't split electrons, they do collisions that make new nuclides.

Their doing beam runs now to make Nickle isotopes.

The Advanced Photon Source is amazing.

And I thought NOBODY watched Boxing Helena.

well, someone got noble for taking the electron out of gold & turning it into lead...

Talk about a top secret weapon that will get Ray's hoard....
