CDC: Infant Circumcision Fights HIV

Public health officials are considering promoting routine circumcision for all baby boys born in the United States to reduce the spread of H.I.V., the virus that causes AIDS. "We have a significant HIV epidemic in this country," said Dr. Peter Kilmarx, CDC epidemiologist. "What we've heard from our consultants is that there would be a benefit for infants from infant circumcision, and that the benefits outweigh the risks."

The artical states it will only recommend circumcision as a benefit down the road for males.

They aren't suggesting mandating it.

It's nothing more than a public health announcement.

yes, i realize the health benefits of circumcision and have to wonder why THE PUBLIC HEALTH officials have to promote something most pediatricians will tell you. if you're going to get aids or hiv, there is no amount of foreskin you can remove to change that fact - why don't they promote using condoms instead?

Condoms are not a panacea. They can be breached or slip off or be chewed off prior because they can be so damn tasty.

Of course, the only sure method is not to scrump at all. I don't see you promoting that.

If this is to protect them later in life, then let THEM decide to do it when they're old enough to be doing the sexy.

Infants don't generally have a lot of sex, so leave their parts intact!

Actually, murphy, there have been several studies over the past year that have shown a decrease in HIV transmission in circumsized males. I believe there was even a thread on one of them here on the DR.

They have been. For decades.

It's funny, many are acting as if this is the first and only anti-HIV measure the CDC has implemented.

Circumcision is mutilation. Leave it up to the individual to decide if they want to be circumcised. No one has the right to circumcise anyone else.

I was traumatized when the ritual of circumcision
was performed on me - I still cannot forgive my
parents for allowing this barbaric ritual to take place.

It's one of the sad realities of HIV-its transmission is exclusively through a low number of specific activities that ALL have ways of preventing transmission. And yet, we can't even slow the thing down.

I seem to remember seeing an episode of Penn & Teller: Bullshit in which one of the interviewees reversed his circumcision.

It had something to do with taping (or otherwise affixing) specialized weights to the soon-to-be foreskin (basically whatever's currently available to roll over the fireman's helmet) and keeping it on for several hours each day.

...IIRC. No shit. Not a book, though, and wouldn't be entirely cost-free...although certainly not $12k.

The episode is available online if you're familiar with the freeloading aspects of das internets (*hackhack* pirate bay *cough*), although *I* certainly don't make that recommendation...

The vast majority of humans dying from hiv/aids are heterosexual. The largest group of new cases is reported in the middle aged (42-60) hetero population, with women having the largest spike of 65%. Followed by hetero teens.

What is funny is that the majority of homosexuals I know are far more monogamous than the hetero couples I know. Far more hetero pedophiles as well.

We as a species are compelled to sexual activity, just as every other animal. It shall remain that way untill humans evolve beyond the pleasure factor.
