vMISSING MICHIGAN GIRL

Tangena Hussain's dad: This case doesn't make sense

I don't think this case has made the national news like the case of the missing Florida girl, which is too bad really, considering that if she is not already dead, she might have been taken across state lines.

Bob Barr comments on the presidential debates

www.huffingtonpost.com

The presidential and vice-presidential "debates" are awful. The bloviating is excessive; the substance is minimal; and the moderating is bush league.

Virtually no one has been satisfied with the debates so far -- except perhaps Barack Obama's campaign staff. The less substantive and contentious the debate is, and the less interesting the discussion -- the better it is for the political front-runner, but not for the American people.

[MY COMMENT: I am sure SNL is also happy with the debates.]

Obviously, part of the problem is procedural. We have moderators who seem more interested in squelching than in promoting real disagreement. We have formats that rule out the genuine give-and-take of an organic debate.

Imagine, for instance, how Sarah Palin would have performed if she had been called for ignoring questions and challenged for her repetitive canned generalities. Or, imagine if the presidential candidates each had 15 minutes to make their respective cases, followed by five-minute rebuttals and a question and answer period in which both could respond to each other. We might actually learn something about the candidates, other than their skill at dodging controversy. Rather than seeing these prospective presidents be forced to operate outside their own comfort zones, all the voters see are candidates doing their best to stay within their debate preparations -- hardly "presidential!"

However, the biggest failing of the three contests so far is substantive. For all of the noise and fury of the campaign, Senators Barack Obama and John McCain agree more than they disagree. [...] Even their differences are distressingly small.

Wall Street Benefits Twice from Bailouts
by Bob Barr

townhall.com

Senator John McCain attempted to disguise reality by calling the $700 billion Wall Street bailout a "rescue," but it's obvious that the only people he and his colleagues were rescuing were the executives who had made bad investment decisions, as well as the politicians who had pushed increased mortgage lending, irrespective of cost, triggering today's crisis. Now it turns out that the companies getting bailed out will benefit twice.

Most everyone has seen the story of how executives at AIG partied at a resort after the taxpayers were stuck with the bill for an $85 billion bailoutnow being supplemented with another Federal Reserve loan of $37.8 billion. But what's $440,000, including more than $23,380 for spa services, among friends when the taxpayers are paying?

Normally politicians wouldn't have any business complaining about the cost of a corporate retreat, but what might be unexceptional for high-flying companies in a booming economy becomes outrageous when taxpayers are getting stuck with the bill. In this case they are paying twice, with the company collecting a new loan because its bottom line is even worse than originally thought.

Loan-two to AIG is small change compared to the extra benefits that Wall Street will receive. Many of the largest firms will be going to the spa, figuratively, at least. You see, someone has to manage all of the securities and other assets that the government plans on buying with taxpayer funds. And who better to manage them than the very companies that bought the bad paper in the first place!

The Treasury Department has requested proposals for asset managers, and according to the Wall Street Journal, the government "wants large, established firms with significant assets to work for the government's program." That means managing at least $25 billion, and in some cases at least $100 billion, in private assets. There will be a lot of money in feestypically 1 percent of the assets managed, which could come to as much as $7 billion a year or more if government purchases go past $700 billion, as is widely expected.

[...]

Indeed, politics are starting even before the president's signature on the bill is dry. One analyst predicts that the Treasury Department will focus bailout funds on regional banks and thrifts, thereby providing "critical political support for Treasury's efforts." After all, "Congressmen who had to swallow hard to vote for this think will feel a lot better about it if they see the impact in their local communities." Which is just another name for pork, like the spending programs and tax preferences loaded into the $700 billion bailout bill to win votes for passage.

One might, however, easily imagine a 2000 point drop had nothing passed Congress.

Treasury let Congress know on Friday their right to divert funds from the 'bailout' (or now, 'rescue package') to shore up banks instead of buy up bad mortgage paper was buried somewhere in the 400 pages.

I can't decide which is worse, the squib kick or leaving a receiver free on the outside when they have 6 seconds to work with. Either way, he's an idiot.

"How bout Lovie Smith, and the squib kick?"

OMG...I couldn't believe that game!

That bears game was one of the most depressing sporting events I've ever watched. You can blame the short kick but ultimately the defense gave up the big throw afterwards. Earlier they had 2 chances at the goal line and couldn't score. They didn't deserve to win.

But how 'bout them Packers?!!!

I'd say that could have been a likely event.

As a fiscal conservative (I vote Democrat now - they're the only one's who seem to possess any fiscal responsibility nowadays) I'm not keen on spending hundreds of billions, but this was a necessary step to prevent a meltdown as much as people want to whine about it.

I'll keep repeating that thanks to W and the GOP's utter lack of fiscal responsibility we paid nearly $500,000,000,000 (billion) just last year to service the national debt. Pray interest rates don't rise or we'll be paying more than that.

For some reason I read "Tony Roma" and had a laugh.

I know nothing about football.

How bout those Cards

Romo, knocked down 19 times, is out for 3-4 weeks with a broken pinkie. Jessica is reportedly happy it was a small finger.

The 'Boys O-line "talent" seems to think some one else is going to block for Romo.

And giving up 2 special teams touchdowns, including the first ever team record opening kick-off returned for a TD, and the first ever NFL record punt block for a win in OT is a really "special" way to set records.

THe whole game looked like Halloween in Arizona, spooky.

A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel and were standing in the lobby discussing their recent tournament victories. After about an hour, the manager came out of the office and asked them to disperse. "But why?" they asked, as they moved off. Plot for a porno?

I think that one's been made already.

Sparks will fly on the last debate. McCain is alreaqy being criticed for stating that he is going to whip Obama's "butt." I am being diplomatic since he actually used the other word, a!!. So pretty soon members of the Latrine News Service Society will start to brand McCain again a racist.
However, a little history here for members of the L.N.S.S. When he was running for reelection for the nomination for his second term, Pres. Jimmy Carter had some competion. Remember, amnesia sufferers, what Pres. Carter said towards his competition: "I'll whip his ass." Who was Pres. Carter referring to? Sen. Ted Kennedy. I guess Pres. Carter was being a racist against the Irish. One more thing. Above, I described the word as a!!. No need for being diplomatic anymore because, if a Demoratic President of the United States used the word ass publicly, so can anyone else. But for those that are still a little uncomfortable I suppose that one can substitue the word ass with the word, anus.

I think that one's been made already.

okay lets see a show of hands here

all of you lfs who were, in 2006, preaching to us that this country HAD TO HAVE a divided washington.....in other words we had to have a democrat congress to counter the republican white house.

OKAY KEEP THEM UP..

now all you lfs who NOW are all about this country being run by obama, pelosi and ried because they are all dems.

lets see...............hhhhhhhmmmm

yeah just what I thought..........almost all of you

Madagashcar?!!!

LOL... that's just horrible.

I don't know, but I think it was a dogfart feature.

TMI?

and lately we have heard all about how nasty and dangerous mccain rallies have become

wonder if he majors will show us the mccain signs that were FIREBOMBED with molotov cocktails today or maybe yesterday in the northwest.///

those cocktails.......wonder if they were left over from some of barry's bud ayers when he bombed buildings and not education??????

First the policy makers pretend that they can be paid, then they denounce the pessimists as spreading panic, and then they say that students have been taught for four thousand years how the "magic of compound interest" keeps on doubling and redoubling debts faster than the economy can squeeze out an economic surplus to pay.

What has ended is the idea that "the magic of compound interest" can make economies rich without having to work and without industry. I hope we have seen the end of derivatives formulae seeking to make money by playing in a zero-sum game. A debt overload ends either in foreclosure or annulment to preserve the economy.

If Congress really wanted to restore confidence it could mark to market, not to model. Investors no longer believe America's Enron-style accounting, debt rating agencies or monoline risk insurers. They don't trust U.S. banks to be honest about their financial positions. They worry about the fraud charges brought by attorneys general in eleven states against predatory lenders such as Countrywide and Wachovia that Citibank, JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America were so eager to buy.

While Senators and Congressmen were debating $700 billion for the major Wall Street contributors to both parties (only for starters, Mr. Paulson explained), the Federal Reserve already had given even more, without public discussion and mention in the major media. Since Bear Stearns failed in March, the Federal Reserve has used the small print of its charter to go outside its commercial charter and give investment banks, brokerage houses and large corporations some $875 billion in "cash for trash" swaps. (see the Fed's H41 report.) The Fed has exchanged Treasury securities for junk mortgages and other securities that brokerage houses and investment banks did not have time to pawn off onto OPEC, Asian sovereign wealth funds or other investors.

The Fed Chairman is not elected democratically. He traditionally is designated by the Wall Street financial sector that the Fed is supposed to regulate, acting as its lobbyist for creditor interests the top 10 percent of the population against that of the indebted "bottom 90 percent." This "independence of the central bank" is trumpeted as a hallmark of democracy. But it is undemocratic, precisely by being isolated from public control.

The subprime mortgage problem could have been solved by writing down just $1 or $2 trillion of the face value and interest rates of predatory loans. Instead, the $10+ trillion in financial-sector damage in recent weeks reflects Wall Street's fraudulent packaging and sale of junk mortgages at unrealistically high prices, using junk mathematics to calculate junk derivatives and sell them to gullible investors who believe that the pretenses these mathematics, credit ratings and projected income have a basis in reality.
Today we can see the debt-fueled bubble of asset-price inflation that Alan Greenspan trumpeted as real wealth creation for what it really is credit creation to bid up real estate, stock market and packaged-debt prices. Tangible capital formation has been left out of account, as if postindustrial economies no longer need it.

Will voters see the asymmetry in Congress's failure to offer debt relief for homeowners as real estate prices plunge below the mortgages that are owed? Will its members be blamed for not rewriting the nation's bankruptcy laws to free families from debt peonage and free housing markets from the price declines that result from today's proliferation of foreclosure sales? Will there be no relief for Corporations having to cut back investment to service junk bonds and other debts with which Wall Street's corporate raiders and "shareholder activists" have loaded then down?

Evidently not.

California burning

Two HUGE fires within 20 miles of each other and my house is smack dab in the middle. The two fires are in the foothills and mountains at opposite ends of the San Fernando Valley.

TERRIBLE fire conditions -- 9% humidity with winds gusting up to 50 mph. That means all it takes is one large ember to be carried by the wind and when it lands a whole new fire breaks out. It is bone dry out here.

Porter Ranch (the fire located at one end of the SFV) has some beautiful and very expensive homes and the fire is now 15 minutes away from a large group of these homes. If it hits them it's all over. Firemen from the city, county, and even in Ventura have been called in. If the winds pick up in the afternoon as has been predicted we could end up in serious trouble. It's hard to put out flying embers that can be carried more than one mile by the winds only to start a brand new fire where it lands.

You kmow it's trouble when all our local tv channels have pre-empted all the regular television shows to show this fire 24/7.

Anyone who lives along the foothills of the SFV -- from Little Tujunga Canyon on one end all along the SFV to Porter Ranch on the other end -- keep your eye on the news if you're not at home. 400 plus homes already evacuated and if this fire now coming down towards that community of homes in Porter Ranch gets going -- good luck.

Hope this fire doesn't burn thru the towers for my cable connection.

Live stream of the fire in California

Remember I told you about that community of homes in Porter Ranch? Well the fire has just gotten up to the ridge of the hills behind the homes.

Here is raw live feed on the fire from KTLA - Channel 5. It's the best I can find for now.

You'll see the homes in the front and all the smoke now surrounding the homes. It's hard to hear the voices but the smoke is getting worse and if this fire comes roaring down that ridge towards those home -- adios.

Check it out if you want to see what these California wild fires are like -- nasty!

LIVE FEED TO FIRE

ZO - kickin' donkey!

i love that man - reminds me of one our best friends in californistan - zo could be his son.

um, chris - doesn't cali catch on fire every year about this time? did when i was growing up there.

NOTE -- the live feed I gave you guys is now showing other parts of the fire. If you want to watch the fires this raw live feed will be showing it all day long.

It'll give you an idea of how fast and furious these California wildfires can get. The fire is now in the backyards of some of those Porter Ranch homes.

I won't be back on here for awhile.

I won't be back on here for awhile.

Stay safe and Good Luck!

nanc

um, chris - doesn't cali catch on fire every year about this time? did when i was growing up there.

Yeah, like clockwork. But California is the size of about 6 states put together. Fires happen all over. This one just happens to be a waaayyy to close to my part of town for comfort -- especially with 9% humidity, Santa Ana winds coming in, plus the fire creates its own winds. There are 2 huge fires within 20 miles of each other all along the foothills and mountains of the San Fernando Valley. I'm on the Eastern end of the SFV -- where the first large fire started. Firemen are sweating the winds supposed to kick up again this afternoon. If you're from California you know that one fire ember in these winds can be blown more than a mile and start another fire when it lands.

Most of these fires are usually back in the mountainous area but these fires today are right up next to homes. If this fire on the crest of the ridge behind those Porter Ranch homes comes roaring down the hill it may take them all out. I hope they have enough superscoopers to take care of it.

If it wasn't for the winds and the bone dry humidty it would just be another fire. These conditions now though are all set to make this fire much worse. Anyway, watch the live feed if you want or don't. I just thought some people who have never watched a California wildfire might like to see it.

later

God, now the fire jumped the freeway.
WATCH the video -- it's the closest you're going to get to see what these fires are like.

Looks like the fire has already started on some homes. The tv crew is getting ready to get the hell out of there,

We are talking an area with a lot of homes -- not just some mountainous area.

right fine liberal media to say the least.

If you have an Obama sticker beware. I got pulled over for supposedly having too dark of tint. the cop proceeded to have me and my friend get out of the car. He proceeded to have the drug dog go through my car. He then gave me a court appearance ticket. Oh btw as I lay face down on the wet pavement the cop smoked a cigarette. WTF is that? One of two things the cop either hates Obama or wanted to give my black friend a hard time because cops never hassle people over tint like this.

Yes rasta, the cop pulled you over because of your bumper sticker.

Why on earth did he have the drug dog go through my ride? Because he is a bigot and wanted to hassle a liberal.

Maybe you drive like you blog, rasta...stupid.

Why on earth did the cop pull you over in the first place.

Stated my tint was too dark. But I suspect he wanted to harass me for having an Obama sticker on the car and once he saw a black guy riding with me he automatically thought we were potheads I assume.

Is your tint too dark?

Not in my opinion but he says it is. But it's dark outside so how can he really tell? Having me lay face down on the pavement and having the drug dogs in my car is what pissed me off.

RASTA

I didn't put a bumper sticker on either of our cars.

Last election someone keyed my car just because they didn't like my Kerry bumper sticker.

That event added to my disdain for NeoCon Bush supporters and their ilk. I'd never do something like that. In fact, my next door neighbor has a McCain/Palin yard sign. I'd never think about pulling it up late at night like it is now. That's their right.

As to cops, well, some become cops so they can play out their Wyatt Earp fantasies, and others to serve the community. You got a bad one.

AU my first Obama bumper sticker got pulled off so I got another one. Rethuglicans seem to have a problem respecting other peoples property.
