Christopher Hitchens: The ongoing financial meltdown is just the latest example of a disturbing trend that, to this adoptive American, threatens to put the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave on a par with Zimbabwe, Venezuela, and Equatorial Guinea.

It's hard to pick out a sentence or two from this great article because it's so funny and so right about how things really are.

I'm going with:

"And am I the only one who finds it distinctly weird to reflect that the last head of the Federal Reserve and the current head of the Treasury, Alan Greenspan and Hank "The Hammer" Paulson, should be respectively the votaries of the cults of Ayn Rand and Mary Baker Eddy, two of the battiest females ever to have infested the American scene? That Paulson should have gone down on one knee to Speaker Nancy Pelosi, as if prayer and beseechment might get the job done, strikes me as further evidence that sheer superstition and incantation have played their part in all this. Remember the scene at the end of Peter Pan, where the children are told that, if they don't shout out aloud that they all believe in fairies, then Tinker Bell's gonna fucking die? That's what the fall of 2008 was like, and quite a fall it was, at that."

"then Tinker Bell's gonna fucking die". Brilliant.

His concluding remarks about banana republics and our military which I had to read three times before I saw what he meant were right on too. Simply speaking, the Bush administration doesn't deserve General Petraeus and our military but thank God we have them all the same.

I don't always agree to Hitchens, but I could listen to him on CSPAN for hours. The metaphors and analogies he uses are colorful and I love the brilliant way he puts together the language.

I love the Banana Republic--best pair of jeans I've ever owned are from there.

Neat. Hitchens FTW.

It is interesting to watch Bush's base distancing themselves as his great pyramid of lies crumbles.

Hitchens was once a rabid supporter of Shrub and his cockamamee policies.

Reality is catching up with a load of fraudmeisters, who now blame the poor for the mess we're in and in doing so reveal their inner sordid character.

On Nation under God.

God Bless America.

America, the financial boat is rocking, but we'll get to the shore: better days are ahead! (Matthew 8:23-27).

Nice to see the McCarthy era is so well represented at the insane asylum.

The metaphors and analogies he uses are colorful and I love the brilliant way he puts together the language.

All the more intelligent conservatives are (pardon the pun) bailing out on Bush and McCain: Parker, Brooks, Krauthammer, George Will, Buckley, which leaves all the righties, without too many brain cells working, still spewing the talking points without an in-depth knowledge of what lies behind them. This is most evident in the McCain / Palin rallies, which are now littered almost exclusively with white trash and kkk. Even here on the DR it is noticeble how many of the far-right Bush and McCain supporters are now claiming to be voting for third party candiidates, Ron Paul, Bob Barr, Ralph Nader, Mickey Mouse, etc. Very Interesting!

" third party candiidates(sic), Ron Paul, Bob Barr, Ralph Nader, Mickey Mouse, etc. "

Don't forget Paris!

Hag- FWTHOM is the most delusional "thing" on the DR. I think he rather see this country totally self-destruct at his amusement. "It" is just a miserable "thing".

and you are correct

just this morning I listened to cspan and richard norton smith as he talked about books about our historical economic crisis and as he said.......
we came out of 1929 and we will come out of this one
the only question is how much will it hurt........

of course if we listened to obama's

"SPIRITUAL ADVISOR" named wright we would all be saying

"God damn america"............

Wright was wrong on that one and God is making him pay for it by exposing it. A public apology and expalnation, if not done yet, might help.

As for Ayers, he is still unrepentant and he will continue to live in shame to the end of his days on American soil. Repentance and a public apology will help.

Don't forget Paris!

you're in the lower 49 now!

"and he will continue to live in shame to the end of his days on American soil."

This really looks like someone living in "shame":

events.berkeley.edu

takesituptheass-he turned himself in to the police and plead guilty to the charges that were filed against him.
He also apologized for bein' a stupid douchebag.

He was also younger than w was when he quit drinkin' & druggin'(yeah, like THAT happened)remember? He was 45-and EVERYTHING that happened before then was off limits?

Read a book, dipshit.

Ayers escaped thanks to a technical error on the prosecution. As of September 11 2001, on the day terrorists attacked America (9/11), Ayers was still arrogant and declared he should have done more to harm America.

Terrorist: Ayers is thy name! And you will pay for it with shame for the rest of your life on American soil and in history.

Repent and issue a public apology while there is time.

REDSOXFAN,

My "delusional" behavior as you call it is because I still think the Indians can win a world series after 60 years.

Don't you ever get tired of being a silly unintelligent partisan hack?

Lets's all listen carefully for all the repentance and apologies coming from the neo-cons and the talibaptists (and other assorted criminals and charlatans) for driving our once great country into the proverbial ground.

I'm listening......

Not hearing anything........

hmm, maybe apologies won't be forth-coming, what cha think?

(ps, i actually agree with you that ayers created acts against the gov't but he was tried and acquited - move on. let's talk about cheney, he hasn't been tried yet.)

Hitch has a few good ideas, not the least of which is his contempt for Da Church Of Murrica. But Hitch bugged out on The Nation after that great mag condemned Bush's Iraq war; Hitch thought it more important to get Saddam. As for the U.S. becoming as relevant as Mali ... hell, we set that up eight years ago, and knew it. herm

Hitchens' conjectures, which he issues as conclusions, are frequently in error, and this jeremiad is no exception. The biggest misstatement is that characterizing American currency as the laughing stock of the world. Surprise. Surprise. The value of the American dollar has been increasing in relationship to other currencies.

Beginning with false premises, Hitchens continues writing in his amusing style. He is fun to read, but the his knowledge of content and his analytical ability are low on the scale if instruction is sought.

Hitchens is one of those people whose bufoonery enriches our literary landscape. His pretense if he is seriously regarded as presenting valid information and incisive analysis, however, is characteristic of him and should be disregarded. If Hittchens is valued for what he is, he's okay. If merit is accorded his views, he misleads.

It looks like Murca is already the laughing stock of the world:blog.zog.org

Here's my favorite passage from the article:

Has anybody resigned, from either the public or the private sectors (overlapping so lavishly as they now do)? Has anybody even offered to resign? Have you heard anybody in authority apologize, as in: "So very sorry about your savings and pensions and homes and college funds, and I feel personally rotten about it"? Have you even heard the question being posed? O.K., then, has anybody been fired? Any regulator, any supervisor, any runaway would-be golden-parachute artist? Anyone responsible for smugly putting the word "derivative" like a virus into the system?

NO SIN UNREPENTED WILL GO UNPUNISHED.

Ayers is getting punished for his own sins --- and the only remedy is repentance.

"NO SIN UNREPENTED WILL GO UNPUNISHED."

If that's true, Cheney is in for some tough times.

Repent!

You know, takeitez, you are a real ninny. Wright was actually quoting another person who DID say that, an american ambassador. Why is god not making him pay for it by exposing him, especially to all the righties?

There's No Fianancial Crisis At All - Its All Just Left-Wing,Liberal Propaganda!!!

Once again there is really "Nothing" at all to worry about - because as we've been reassured and reminded so many, many times on this site and numerous others, that this horrific financial meltdown is a fiction,a total hokum! Its really just part and parcel of the vicious Anti-Republican-Anti-Bush "Propaganda" thats been hatefully disseminated by the Left-Wing,Hippie Liberals, who are the real "Greedy,Evil Destroyers" of America! Isn't this just so wonderfully reassuring! Yea Bush Republicans!!!

Terrorist???? You really want to talk about terrorist?

Just ask a native american who the real terrorist are...

Took the land and the minerals, pillaged, plundered and mamed...

The europeans were terrorists in the day and no one has the nuts to call it out because it was in the name of "god".

The South fell because of taxes all under the umberalla of "slavery" Not saying that slavery was right but that wasn't the real issue.

Do a little investigating before you accuse anyone of Terrorism...

NYT: On 9/11 (2001) Ayers expressed that he should have done more to harm America. Unrepentant.

Based on that, I called him a terrorist. If he had shown true remorse between then and now, I will issue a retraction and an apology. Let me know if you have specific information on the matter.
