Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs
Thursday, October 09, 2008

Just look at Dr. Kim Nguyen, who left the state with a total of 5,870 hours of unused vacation or deferred pay for being on-call or called back to work. When he left the job in January, he took home $475,663 in a lump sum, and will collect an additional $339,525 in 2009 because the state allows employees to spread such massive payments over two years for income tax purposes.

Oh yeah this is after 10 years of work!

Who wrote the rules?

It seems he's just playing by them.

Don't blame the player, blame the game.

Don't blame the player, blame the game.

I blame the ref, but only when my team loses.

I don't blame him...

But if we are asking for a loan from the feds...

Perhaps we should be giving it away..

"Don't blame the player, blame the game."

given the above I suppose you don't mind what happened at WaMu?

No problem here. Sounds like the good doctor didn't take many vacations or sick days, and built up a nice bank. That's almost 150 weeks of unused vacation time, or the equivalent of about 3 years working.

Ching ching. Maybe he'll start his own business. Or become a consultant. But don't refuse to cut him a paycheck, just because his colleagues spent their vacations in Vegas, and he went to work.

"his colleagues spent their vacations in Vegas, and he went to work."

Bingo.

Company policy was: if you didn't take it, you could bank it. If they followed proper procedures, they accounted for those increasing liabilities each year (like the executive who qualifies for an additional $1M parachute for every year with the company), and should be more than happy to pay him, since they only have to pay him the raw amount without any added interest. In the ultimate equation, he saved them a lot of money: they've had free use of monies they would've had to pay out years and years before.
