North Korea is trying to develop a nuclear warhead that would fit on to a missile, South Korea's top military official has said.

They already have a nuclear bomb. Their long-range missile tests have not been too successful over the past few years. People need to realize that nuclear weapons are a defensive weapon, not an offensive weapon. Countries develop them to discourage other countries from attacking them. Also, it serves no purpose to develop nuclear weapons in secret. They have their greatest effect when you tell other people that you have them.

Good point. A bit nuanced for the red-meat crowd, perhaps, but definitely on target.

Masters at the deterrence game: the Israelis. Everybody knows they've got The Bomb. (Chemical weapons? Bio? Quien sabe?) But how many? What size? In what state of readiness? Only one way to find out, and I don't see any of the heads of adversarial states in any big hurry to open that particular Pandora's box.

Back to the negotiating table again.

This will mean greater starvation for its people. N. Korea has become a beggar nation, or more appropriately an 'extorting nation'.

Maybe Obama should go and meet 'Dear Leader' with no 'naive' preconditions. Joe Lieberman calls him naive.

I won't worry over North Korea. It is propped up only because of the egomaniac Kim Jong Il who is about to die anytime soon --- and then the two Koreas will be reunited. Prepare, South Korea.

Yawn. Until they point it as us or talk about doing so, nobody should give a damn.

I thought Bush had done that. Wasn't that long ago, but aftet Kim set his first bomb off that Bush reached a deal that you here were bragging about.

Sic transit gloria bushie.

Yes, Unless your goal is terror.

"a nuclear warhead that would fit on to a missile"

Hello?

"Also, it serves no purpose to develop nuclear weapons in secret."

Tell that to the Israelis.

Would terrorists be able to successfully, inconspicuously purchase a nuclear *fuck* missile, have it shipped to them overseas, set up a launch site and fire the fucking thing at Israel?

Using what? A trebouchet?

Maybe they'll pile a mountain of sand, bring the missile to the top of the mountain, give it a push and watch it roll down into the Holy Land.

Delivery by a missile is unlikely, but did you ever read (or see the movie) "Sum of All Fears" by Tom Clancy? There ARE ways in which a nuclear device can be delivered other than by missile or aircraft. Figure it out, if drug dealers can smuggle TONS of heroin, cocaine etc. into the country, a nuclear device is not out of the question.

I've not personally attempted that, so I really can't speak to how accurat Tom Clancy was in that department. But I'll bet there are sensors that might be of some help and, if so, I'd be poleaxed to learn that the Israelis don't have several bucketloads of them positioned just where they think they need to be placed. Foolproof? No.

FLUCUTATIONS!?!?! I SHOW YOU AXIS OF EEEVER!

Drop it on Wall Street.
