The practical answer is that the Democrats haven't nominated a competent candidate since Hubert Humphrey -- and he was a flaming Liberal when Liberalism was at its peak.

McGovern? Please. Carter? Clinton only won because of Perot.

Algore and Kerry were such awful choices that even a lightweight like Bush beat them. Now, it looks like McCain is such an awful choice that a lightweight like Osama the Messiah will win.

Meanwhile, Conservatives haven't had a reasonable alternative from the GOP since Reagan.
