Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

Gary Younge: An afternoon out with an Obama canvasser is an education in the leg work, patience and resilience it takes for the Democratic presidential contender's strategy work. "Do you see the fucking Nader sign," one man bellowed at two Obama volunteers in Virginia. "Get your ass off my property before I get my shot gun."

I get the back door!

--Barney Frank

I went out canvassing for Obama in Nashua, NH this weekend and I didn't run into anything like that. Most people were voting for Obama already (at least in the area I was sent) so I almost felt it was a waste of time.

Of the McCain people I did visit, they were very polite and we parted on pleasant terms.

From the article:

"Get you're ass off my property before I get my shot gun," said the tourretic Nader supporter. And so we left. As we circled back along the street the man sat at a table in his driveway.
Cheekily, I waved my hand at him. Menacingly, he waved his gun at me"

If that's what is meant by Southern Hospitality, then you can keep it.

Like I said, I did the same thing up here but I went to Southern NH and NOBODY was talking through windows or waving a gun. Even staunch McCain supporters were polite.

In many places, brandishing a weapon against an unarmed civilian (even from your driveway) will land you in the slammer.

Why the Gun? Did this 'tough guy' really think he needed to show a woman what a bad ass he was? If this man was really that vehement about his politics, why didn't he try and talk to the Obama people about why his candidate is better than theirs, instead of slamming the door and threatening them?

Commonsense, most people don't want strangers knocking on their door. Most people that come knocking on your door are either selling something or wanting you to take their Jehovah Witness pamphlets. And if you let them get started, you are stuck with them for an hour.

Well, this man knew they weren't selling him anything and they weren't jehovah's Witnesses........btw, how are you stuck with them for an hour? I've always found a simple 'No thank you' works fine for me.

There's a whole lot of wiggle room between being stuck with them for an hour and sitting in the driveway with your shotgun.

After about 30 seconds I either threaten to shoot them or threaten to sic my dog on them.

Either way, I send them away running at top speed.

Without getting into the political aspect of it, your statement, although true, is a very sad commentary on our society.

After about 30 seconds I either threaten to shoot them or threaten to sic my dog on them.

I only use such measures on those trying to sell their religion. I generally listen to politicians and organizers, or at least give them a fair shot. I like to be informed when it comes to those politicking in my hood.

That's the beauty of it being 'Your Door'. You can simply close it at any time and no weapons have to be waved in the faces of the religion/political peddlers.

I saw a family one Sunday morning about 7am (they sure do organize early) a few doors up the street from me just as I got back from a run. I knew they were coming and I had a good idea what they wanted (religion peddlers...I was right). An 11 year old boy came to my door and asked if I had accepted someone or other and I told him that I wasn't interested and said 'no thanks, have a nice day'. This 11 year old proceeded to tell me I was going to 'burn in hell' with hatred on his face and in his voice. I nodded my head and said 'sounds great, have a nice day' and closed the door. Even if it was a grown-up, I would have handled it the same. I didn't need to slam the door (it's my door, why the fuck would I want to slam it. If it eventually breaks, I'm the one paying for it)) and I certainly didn't need to threaten anyone with words or weapons.

A man invites two Jehovah Witnesses in.

When they'd all sat down he said, "Well, young men, what did you want to talk about".

Looking befuddled, the two young Jehovah Witnesses looked at each other and one responded, "We don't know. We've never gotten this far before"

I've been canvassing for months.

Surprisingly, even here in a red state, I've found well over half are supporting Obama. They're sick of the state of America and know who's to blame - the GOP and their reckless policies.

I got called for pollling this week

it was almost cool to tell someone just how bad obama would be for america.....I dont think they liked all of my answers....

A friend of mine and his wife were cleaning chickens in their kitchen when a couple of JWs or Mormons came to the door. he answered it in his bloody apron with a bloody knife in his hand, saying "ahh, Christians!".

They left.

A Naderite with a gun? I thought they'd just bury somebody in Corvair parts.

"he answered it in his bloody apron with a bloody knife in his hand, saying "ahh, Christians!".'

They left.

Quick! Call Bill Maher!
ff!!!

An even better tactic for Witnesses and other evangelists at the door: Cordially invite them in for a chat; "you tell me about YOUR church and I'll tell you about mine." One has yet to come in. herm

I really like that.

Very disarming.

"Hell no!" said the man with the long beard from his half opened doorway.

Meghan Schertz's Obama badge had unleashed a torrent of invective.

"No Obama," he kept shouting, while Meghan struggled to finish a sentence. "I don't need to hear nothing from you Obama people."

"Do you see the fucking Nader sign," he bellowed, pointing to his yard sign which bared the name of the perennial independent candidate, Ralph Nader. "There's your answer."

"So you're an independent then," asked Meghan, as though engaged in rational conversation.

"Get you're ass off my property before I get my shot gun," said the tourretic Nader supporter. And so we left. As we circled back along the street the man sat at a table in his driveway.

Cheekily, I waved my hand at him. Menacingly, he waved his gun at me.

I'm surprised he didn't just say, "Happy extinction, you deserve it."

That's great!

Even you admit that you can't talk about your own candidate so you have to try to paint the other as the bad guy.

Simple tactics for simple minds.

I canvased for Barack in Indiana in April when he was still running against the Billary and Indiana is the toe of the south as the bigits are growing on trees down there.

Being 'anti-Bush' makes me brain dead & deranged?

What would you call the people that still think Bush is doing a good job? Besides 'you' that is.

ff for AU. That trains pics made me LOL.

Although you may feel Bush is the cause of this financial crisis. But in fact we all are. Those who spent money with credit cards we couldn't afford. Those who bought homes with mortigages they knew they could never pay for. Congress for not monitoring the crisis like they should and the mortigage company for pushing the bad paper.

If you look back these 8 years, Bush and McCain warn us of this. But mmm, Obama got money from them. And you want him to be President...I can see a Carter ERA coming....18% Mort., 12% un-employement...

Boy it's everyones fault but Dubya's I just love it. Dubya is supposed to be the CEO of America and his supporters declare it's everyones fault. Boy it must be nice being Dubya. You can screw up everything You touch and Your supporters will blame everone else but You. Amazing just doesn't do justice at what bullshit You all spew.

""Do you see the fucking Nader sign," one man bellowed at two Obama volunteers in Virginia. "Get your ass off my property before I get my shot gun.""

Were there also some women passing out, overwhelmed at the very aura of Obama on scene?

I call bullshit. Most Nader supporters are far leftists who are looking for an alternative to the tainted Democratic party. That doesn't fit the profile of an overly vulgar gun enthusiast. They're just trying to get more people to say, "Oh those wacky Nader people, I feel so safe and secure in supporting Obama over THAT nutjob."

...mind you he IS a useless egomaniac nutjob... but he's not that KIND of nutjob.

I love it when people just can't fathom someone living outside the little boxes they've put people in.

If you need an example of a Nader voting gun nut, look no further than the DR's own Zatoichi.

...somehow I don't qualify Zatoichi as a _crazy_ guntoting Nader supporter.

I continue to call bullshit. The odds are massively against such people being even vaguely common, though they certainly do exist. However, they are not by any means the norm, and the odds of running into one are slim to zero. And then to embellish the lie by saying that he was sitting outside at a table watching over them or something? If you're going to lie, keep it simple.

Oh and, the writers of this bull need to learn: if you're going to submit an article to the guardian, learn the correct usage of "you're" and "your",

/"Get you're ass off my property before I get my shot gun," said the tourretic Nader supporter. And so we left. As we circled back along the street the man sat at a table in his driveway./

Or maybe this fictional crazy gun-toting Nader supporter somehow used bad grammar when he spoke aloud?

Of course, it's silly of me to step out of line and imply this, because it's not like the Obama supporters have a history of making shit up about their opponents, amirite? Nor does the Obama campaign itself have any history of staging events, hay guyz?

The Obama campaign has NEVER used dirty tricks to get ahead, no, NEVER! What's that? Because my signature is printed instead of cursive it's somehow not my signature? Well gee golly gosh damn.

Actually, that was _really specific_. You sure don't know a whole fuck of a lot about Obama, do you?
