I grew up in RI. Graduated from college in OH. Before we moved here in 2000 I'd heard all the southern redneck jokes and somewhat bought into the northeastern superiority complex.

It was that same complex I'd had when going to college and I'd look down my nose on "uneducated" manual laborers or anyone whose job didn't require a degree. I quickly learned there are varying types of intelligence and coping skills.

Maybe it's because I mix well with everyone, but moving down here has been a very good thing. People are much more friendly than in RI, where... if your family hasn't lived there for generations, you're an outsider. You have to be a friend to make a friend. The south's weather and people are warm. It's our home and we wouldn't return to the north unless the Red Sox could use a 48 year old lefty pitcher who hits 75 on the gun.

I think the election of Barack Obama as president frightens the supporters of the status quo more than many a candidate from the past. They have successfully pushed an anti-working class agenda since Reagan's era in the Republican Party. They have been able to do that by capitalizing on the long held resentment of the Democratic party stemming from Civil Rights in much of the South.
If Obama is elected, if he even carries some Southern states formerly dependable Republican states it will send a message to the wealthy and the powerful of this country. It will signal the reemergence of the Democratic Party from decades in the wilderness due to all of those formerly Democratic voters who sided with the Republicans since the sixties and the civil rights era. It will mean that the post civil rights era is over and the working class is not necessarily divided any longer by racial hatred. That is a frightening thought for those who always opposed the reforms of the Roosevelt era. They rightly do fear that Barack Obama will probably win with a considerable margin and a MANDATE for CHANGE. He will enjoy a Democratic majority in both houses of Congress and the support of a population which is finally realizing what 30 years of trickle down REaganomics has done to them and their country.
Barack Obama is more than just the first black major party candidate for president, he will be more than just the first black president, he will be the leader of the most powerful movement by and for the working class of America since the time of FDR. I find thinking about the future this way quite comforting during these times of so much economic uncertainty. Good times are ahead, prosperity is ahead, with the American working class uniting for progress great things are going to happen.

I almost hope Obama wins so Danni will have to eat her words. Will she be devasted when this "uptopia" world under Obama's leadership is all a big political stunt that has been sold to the country like a bottle of "snake oil"?

I was interested in others' take on whether they were complaining more about the word or because it was used to denigrate a certain person who's running for POTUS. I also was curious as to whether a teacher's negative opinion toward Bush or McCain would be tolerated.

I teach "Job Readiness" mornings to people enrolled in Social Services "Work First" program. It's 99% single moms - most all are black. It's a three week program designed to get them back into employment and I've got them for week #2 of their program.

A few weeks ago as things were winding down on a Friday we were kind of killing time. All the week's stuff was done. Everyone had had a good week and the girls (aged roughly 20 - 35) were quite talkative and interacting great with me, which is always the case. It's a fun class, actually.

Any, one black gal used the term nigga toward another in referring to some third party. No one took it as a negative remark. So I asked the person why a white guy like me can't get away with saying nigga/nigger even in the somewhat affectionate tone she'd just used.

This led to a minute of semi serious conversation... but then these gals got real loud with laughter. The one who started it all used the word nigger about five times, real loud - laughing - to talk about how her race uses it. Several other girls are loudly saying nigga, nigga, nigga.

I could just picture some executive walking the hall hearing this. I said, shhhh, but to little avail. A cackling bunch of laughing women now nearly yelling nigga, nigga, nigga like a kid who's first learned the word. Funny stuff!

danejeff is making a very important point confirmed by Obama's position on the bailout. Obama was chosen and funded by WallStreet, before anybody was aware he was running for President. He paid them back once already with the bailout thing. Its not Obama's first compromised position that pushed Nader to run again, despite his poor odds and age.

It wouldn't surprise me if the bailout timing was designed by Wall Street to sink McCain. These people are in a position to hide the truth for a couple of months. But the beauty of this plan is how they pocket $700 billion while making everyone think Obama is their best choice even though they already own him.

My bone of contention is why a black person gets a pass using the term nigger in a negative way. Take Jesse Jackson's newsroom comment a few months ago. That was surely NOT an affectionate comment like one black friend to another saying, "whassup, nigga."

So tell me, TFD, I can see where anyone can say "nigga" but why can only blacks get away using it in a derrogatory sense? Nigger is nigger - a very dismissive word regardless of the speaker's color. Why does Jesse seemingly get a pass when James Dobson would be crucified?

For the record, the girls in my class acknowledged it's an unfair double standard. They abhor being called nigger but they admit their own race uses that same derrogatory term with little public condemnation.

Some of my best friends are Black, but that doesn't mean I would vote for the MF's. So DR libs, why are you voting for Floppy?

This nation has been around for about 250 years, and black slaves were here from the beginning. This is the first time that a black man has been the nominee for president from a major political party. In short, though you would like to live in an ahistorical vacuum, you don't. Proceed from there.

No it's not. Even if it's used as an insult between blacks, it doesn't have the power or the intention as it was when it was used during the slave or segregation days. Has a black ever used it against another as they were refusing them admission to a hospital or as they were lynching them?

I play by the social rules of the road. And, in my role in teaching through the local community college, I have to be very cautious of harassment issues in the classroom.

I do think that if we are to fully accept blacks as "equals" in a colorblind society, we can't continue (nor can they expect) to get a pass such as this. Wrong is wrong. Excusing it due to historical context only perpetuates the status quo, in my view.

While I am not permitted to advocate any political party (nor would I anyway - at least in my role speaking before the class) I frequently do use politics in a generic sense.

I talk about how to avoid directly answering a question... the use of a verbal cushion/buffer... the observance of eye movements to detect possible untruthfulness, etc... and I typically use pols as shining examples.

Actually, AA Stagg High School teacher Lou McKissic had referred to George W. Bush as a "Cracker (who) is a traitor to the vows he took" several times in class. He'd then launch into a little speech about why it's okay for him to say "cracker" about Bush. Some silly diatribe about what the word "really" means. Then he got censured for it when someone finally complained. Now he, quite rightfully, can't say that racist term anymore.

And you know how big a deal that got? A few letters to the editor in the Worth paper (not even the Palos Hills one, where the school is ACTUALLY located). And that was IT. If I didn't still have family there, I wouldn't have known about it at all. Somehow I'm doubting that's the only teacher who has done such things as this in the past. Slavery was practiced in Massachusetts longer than in Florida, courtesy of the fact that Massachusetts was settled over a hundred years before Florida was. And in 18 out of the 24 northern states, blacks still weren't allowed to even vote until after the Civil War. To me, that screams racism.
