Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

The Prosperity Gospel is being blamed for leading some people to acquire houses they couldn't afford with sub-prime mortgages. "A preacher might say, 'if you give this offering, God will give you a house," said J. Lee Grady, editor of the magazine Charisma. And if they did get the house, people did think that it was an answer to prayer, when in fact it was really bad banking policy."

Did God Want You to Get That Mortgage?

Yes, but as long as you are not married to a member of the same sex.

Right, Zap, good comprehension of the material!

Did God Want You to Get That Mortgage?

Absolutely.

But it was The Devil that made me miss those 4 first payments.

I believe getting a mortgage to be AntiGod. If God declare that greed and gluttony are sins isn't wanting something You can't obtain right then and there a form of greed?? Seems to Me if one waits until they can afford it God would be pleased. But there is also the render unto ceasar which is ceasars so............

...not to mention the biblical ban on usury.

Jesus gave me a good deal on a 2 bedroom fixer-upper.

"Jesus gave me a good deal on a 2 bedroom fixer-upper."

Wasn't Jesus a carpenter or something? Why didn't he fix it himself and sell it at a higher price?

Hey, who am I to question the son of God? Plus, I don't think he's legal, know what I mean?

I know wthat you mean. And I am sure the house had electrical and plumbing problems, right, it was out of his league, even for a son of god.

Well, the whole carpenter thing he was ok with, but there's no mention of electrical codes in the Bible. And when I mentioned plumbing he just gave me a funny look.

israel 4BC plumbing = 2nd olive tree on the right, or whatever is down wind.

you guys shouldn't make fun of jesus, he was gonna be on 'flip this house', but some jerk made a fuss about the condition of the house. Satan, in the form of advertisers, pulled the segment.

This is simply RELIGULOUS!!!

Pretty much a no-brainer...after all, he is the supreme being, and he created the universe and everything in it, and he has always known this was going happen.

Nice job with the italics, Dave.

i don't believe, nor condone the prosperity gospel - there is no basis for it in worldly matters. however, i do believe when a person or nation is given over to believing what MAN can do outside of GOD, HE allows us our ways, often to our dismay.

that said, being believers our family does attribute any and all blessings we receive to the the Lord. we cannot contain them.

I hate that term "houses you can't afford". It should be more like "Houses that you pulled a loan out on that dropped in value below the loan rate." or "Houses that you intended to flip so you got a short term adjustable rate mortgage and you couldn't get rid of it before the rate adjusted."

In the VP debate they asked such a stupid question.

"Candidates, who do you blame for the housing crises, a) the greedy banks that gave the loan or b) the stupid people that took them?"

Well Gwen, those are false choices, my answer is c) the federal reserve for creating the cheep credit with 1% interest rates.

.. and it seems like thats ALWAYS the case.. the real problem is always obscured, always ignored, and we always get solutions that have nothing to do with the original problems.

God made the housing market decline to teach us a lesson and test our faith!

Just like when he put those "fake" dinosaur bones all over the place...

That God is soooo Twicksie! I can't wait to be with Him forever...cause he loves me so much he wants to make me fail here on Earth so I will appreciate him so much more in Eternity.

here is someone else who can't wait either!

God or the usual phony preachers?

Right now in the world there are so many good preachers and as nearly many sicknesses calling themselves preachers. Just as many and more of the phony Christians.

If you let yourself be blinded by louses you will not see any of the good done by so many. One total jerk can poison an impossible number of the good.

try suspecting Obama in the financial mess. He pushed so hard to get loans to the under qualified...What a moron, then he blames the Bush admin for his mess.

Well, technically it was God's fault. After all he sent Moses down to deliver the 10 Commandments.

But then Moses decided to stop by Barney Frank's house and they became lovers. So Barney got Moses a job at Fannie Mae.

But instead of writing the 10 Commandments, instead he wrote the rules for sub-prime mortgages while his lover Barney Frank held off the Philistines (better known as the Republicans and Bill Clinton) who were trying to put controls upon the 10 Commandments.

Barney and Moses succeeded and so today we now have the collapse of the mortgage industry...

Cast of Characters:

Moses..................Herb Moses - Assistent Director - Product Initiatives for Fannie Mae

Sword of God......Barney Frank - Chairman of House Banking Committee and Moses' lover

Aaron...................Frankl in Raines - Chairman and CEO Fannie Mae - fired for accounting violations fined $50 million - current position - Chief financial advisor to Barack Obama

Bezaleel.................Tim Howard - CFO - Fannie Mae - forced to resign after cooking books to force bonuses for execs - Current position - Chief financial advisor to Barack Obama

Aholiab.................Jim Johnson - Fannie Mae CEO - forced to resign after hiding $21 MILLION in compensation for himself from stockholders and Federal regulators - Current position - SENIOR Financial Advisor to Barack Obama / member of of Obama VP search team

Philistines..........Former President Bill Clinton

John McCain

Republican Party

Federal Regulators

Quote from Bill Clinton: "I think the responsibility that the Democrats have may rest more in resisting any efforts by Republicans in the Congress or by me when I was President, to put some standards and tighten up a little on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac."

TSG,

Do you believe there are any Republicans to blame?

Jesus kicked the moneychangers out of the Temple. What these mortgage companies (most of whom were akin to dishonest moneychangers) did was bombard every homeowner (and anyone else with a mailbox) that they could and would finance you.

"Great Credit? Bad Credit? No Problem! We're There For You!". I know because we got offers almost every day to take out an equity loan, or refinance with hundreds of companies over a 3 or 4 year period. We'd get these "0% Introductory Rate!" or "BELOW PRIME!" with teeny type that would say something like "ARM". I'd guess there were many who wouldn't know what that term meant.

We got phone calls from sales people who wanted to come on over and talk about a 'refi' on our home. Luckily, we had a bank mortgage we'd refinanced several years before at a really low rate on only the principal left owning on the house.

When I said, "No thanks" to whoever called, the next thing they'd try to do was sell an equity loan, and most of the time it started at some unbelievably low rate (of course). They never made a mention that rate would skyrocket after an initial period. We had a lot of equity and it could have been tempting to others who may have either needed the money, or thought this was their opportunity to put in a pool or whatever.

This mortgage maess isn't just about 1st mortgages. Equity loans were something millions of homeowners (thankfully not us) used like an ATM. I guarantee you a large percentage of those equity loans weren't all they seemed. Introductory rates made them seem attractive - until you really dug into the fine print and found that after that period the rate jumped dramatically.

Everyone wants to blame those who took out the loans, but the blame in my view rests much more on those who offered them ad infinitum with really crappy requirements - knowing that they'd sell the paper within a few days to someone else and it would be their problem if the homeowners defaulted.

One total jerk can poison an impossible number of the good.

Are you saying no good is ever done unless it is done by the christian extremists?

Dammit, I gotta repost because it's so relevant, because the righties would ask you to believe that Big G WANTS the money changers in "His" temple:

Among the rigid right fictions, like McC having a snowball's chance in Miami, is that Democrats somehow draw blame for the Wall Street mess. Maybe Clinton's BJ had something to do with it.

Last night Moyers filled in the blanks. Yes, Dems chanted the deregulation mantra. Yes, this meant big profits for banks with usurious interest, but it meant a chance of rat-free homes for the working poor.

But the biggest blank was the working poor's jobs moving south - or west, or east. Replaced by 18-cent-an-hour Malaysian teen-agers, the working poor couldn't make their payments.

A million jobs lost in a year! THAT is where the real blame lies. herm

According to the article-they found it IN the wreckage of her home, that can mean only one thing...

A Colombian Woolly Mammoth destroyed her home!
Damn Dems! And they tried to blame it on an innocent Hurricane!

God's fault.

"Walton says that this encouraged congregants who got dicey mortgages to believe "God caused the bank to ignore my credit score and blessed me with my first house." The results, he says, "were disastrous, because they pretty much turned parishioners into prey for greedy brokers.""
--from the article

(1)
So greedy brokers are MORE to blame than the LENDER who signed on the dotted line "I will pay ___$ over ___ period of time"?

(2)
If that really IS the cause of any of these foreclosures, they should've read:

"The rich rules over the poor and *the borrower becomes the lender's slave.*"
Proverbs 22:7

We are called to "check everything out" we hear against the Bible, and the advice in question does NOT meet the standard of Scripture--or common sense.
Neither are too highly regarded these days.

It's been confirmed that Barney merged with Herb.

I've been wondering if Moses brought down all the Commandments.

He broke the first set. Could he have just decided that to carry down 3 stone tablets would have been to heavy? LOL

In any case it's a shame the 11th and most important Commandment (in Jesus' own words) was never added to the 10 that made it down from the mountain.

Oops

'too heavy...'

Oh Geez...Now it is GOD that created the housing crisis.

Why don't we lay the blame where it belongs:

1: Carter - then Clinton (with Reno) - and not countered by Bush - Expanded the push for loans to those with low incomes taking out ALL the prior requirements for 20% down and strict rules as to qualifications for a loan. AHP Sub-Prime loans - supported by the Government - pushed by the Dems. and bought up and packaged by Freddie and Fannie.

2: This was compounded by the massive amounts of money Freddie and Fannie poured into Democratic coffers

As an example of why this thing when south..here is a headline.

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 17 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D- Calif. 8th) joined with the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco (FHLBank San Francisco) to announce that $42 million in Affordable Housing Program (AHP) grants were awarded to member financial institutions throughout Arizona, California, and Nevada in 2005. The 2005 AHP grants will support 102 projects and generate 5,994 affordable homes in Arizona, California, and Nevada.

3) The people who made the decision to buy - even though the price of the homes were well out of their leagues.

It was not God, it wasn't Bush (though he shares some guilt by not stopping it) it was the liberal policy that it "wasn't fair that poor people should not have nice houses" again without ANY consideration of the potential downsides.

In the old days owning a nice home was called "incentive to work". Somehow it is now a "right".

Where is the requirement lenders make 125% LTV loans, interest-only loans, teaser-rate loans, and balloon-payment loans?

"it was the liberal policy "

Thanks for admitting the Republicans can't govern even when they control all three branches of government.

Danforth,

You forget...they didn't and don't - Congress is controlled by the DEMS as is the Senate..before that the DEMS had the Senate with a slight majority in house Rep.

The press pounded the Republicans everyday about "bi-partisanship"- when Bush tried to get a separate regulatory body over Freddie and Fannie (2003) this is what was in the press;

""''These two entities -- Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac -- are not facing any kind of financial crisis,'' said Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts, the ranking Democrat on the Financial Services Committee. ''The more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing.'' ...Representative Melvin L. Watt, Democrat of North Carolina, agreed... ''I don't see much other than a shell game going on here, moving something from one agency to another and in the process weakening the bargaining power of poorer families and their ability to get affordable housing,'' Mr. Watt said.

"To suggest somehow that [Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac] are in trouble is simply not accurate," Dodd replied.

** It is this "Bi-Partisanship" that KILLED what needed to be done. And it is no wonder. Look at what they gave Obama and Dodd. And that is not all:**

Rules 'bent' to provide Obama advisers loans
Fannie Mae CEOs Raines, Johnson got exemptions from standard requirements"

Raines and Johnson, as "friends of Angelo Mozilo," the chief executive of Countrywide Financial Corp. the now bankrupt high-flying loan originator in the sub-prime mortgage debacle were funneled millions of dollars for personal home loans. Mozilo himself made exceptions from Countrywide policy to provide the two Fannie Mae CEO's "sweetheart deals."

Dodd and Frank should resign, but none of you will call for that because your alligence to the DEMS far out weigh any alligence to your country (which most of you hate) - and power means everything. BAAA BAAA OBAAAMAAA OOOOBAAAAMAAAA

"Congress is controlled by the DEMS as is the Senate..before that the DEMS had the Senate with a slight majority in house Rep."

Would someone buy that man a history book?

"...it was the liberal policy that it 'wasn't fair that poor people should not have nice houses' without consider(ing) potential downsides. (Once) a nice home was called 'incentive to work'. Somehow it is now a 'right'."

A nice piece of oratory, blending "it's the poor's fault they are poor" with it's gawd's wish. FO totally ignores Ms. Palin's favorite whipping boy, greed and corruption. It's the BANKS that should have known better than to lend to folks whose jobs were about to be shipped out of the country. herm

"...it was the liberal policy "

Oh please.

"In the 1980's, the mortgage industry continued to develop as a result of the activities of government-sponsored enterprises that had been created to purchase blocks of residential home loans. Mortgage bankers began making fixed rate mortgage loans at very competitive prices. They could do this because the risk in holding the fixed rate loan was removed once the loan is sold to an agency such as Fannie Mae. A supply chain was created through a network of independent mortgage brokers that successfully satisfied the needs of consumers and the demands of the mortgage bankers.

Lenders continued to offer ARM products with added refinements, improved features and successfully designed loan plans that not only fit their needs for protection against wide swings in interest rate, but which also met the needs of home buyers."

Foshaffer-no matter how much you obsess about him-Obama is NOT going go to bed with you-he's married-to a woman.

Now the righties are blaming God?
Geez...they'll blame anyone won't they?

I have to be honest here, guys...
This Sub-Prime thing is all my fault...
I stole all that money, what is it? ten Trillion?
I spent it all on Hershey's Chocolate bars, Diet Coke, and, handjobs from a local crack whore...
