Paul Newman, the Academy-Award winning superstar who personified cool as an activist, race car driver, popcorn impresario and the anti-hero of such films as Hud, Cool Hand Luke and The Color of Money, has died. He was 83.

go with God, paul.

too bad there isn't one nanc. go with Buddha Paul.

Think Paul would rather go with a pink tiara and a feather boa to match those terrific Italian shoes he picked up at a flea market. Oh wait, that's RuPaul.

RIP Paul go wherever the hell you want to. You earned it.

Good bye Mr. Newman.
I've always been a fan of your work.
You will be missed.

One of the greatest actors of all time. His performances in Cool Hand Luke and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid are burned into my brain.

Thanks for that, and for the world's best low-salt salsa.

A loss.

Rcade, can you please delete the posting I put on this story. I posted it without looking at the back page. My bad.

You know a movie that I loved that wasn't too popular was 'Absense of Malice'. Cool Hand Luke shouldn't even be considered a film, it should be something like a cultural statement or a masters class in character study.

Goodbye Paul Newman. I loved all your work.

Luke: I can eat fifty eggs.
Dragline: Nobody can eat fifty eggs.
Society Red: You just said he could eat anything.
Dragline: Did you ever eat fifty eggs?
Luke: Nobody ever eat fifty eggs.
Prisoner: Hey, Babalugats. We got a bet here.
Dragline: My boy says he can eat fifty eggs, he can eat fifty eggs.
Loudmouth Steve: Yeah, but in how long?
Luke: A hour.
Society Red: Well, I believe I'll take part of that wager.

Very sad, he's always had cool down to an art form. Paul and Joanne have a home about a mile from us here in Roswell, it was pretty cool when we used to run into him at Home Depot. Just pickin' up the same crap that all of us need at home.

Thanks Paul. Stay Cool.

Damn. Newman was a great guy and a great actor.

Plus his dressings ruled.

He will be missed.

Class act and great actor. You will be missed on the screen and on the track.

My favorite Newman line was something like he was always afraid someday he'd wake up with brown eyes and his career would be over. Total lack of ego.

One of the best ones out there...may he be at peace...and i would give an arm to grok him in his fullness .

Farewell, sir.

He started out as a "pretty boy" fill-in and became an incredible actor. A guy who used his gifts to the ultimate, and also engaged in a lot of charitable pay-back to society. What a mensch. From my lips to God's ears, go easy and go well. And thank you.

Wasn't Mr. Paul in The Sting as well? That was easily one of his best performance, MNSHO.

Well, he no longer has to deal with the crap of this world.

All the women in the U.S. shed a tear today.

Hud - sigh
Fast Eddie - sigh
The Hustler - double sigh
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof -- double sigh
Harper - sigh

Cool Hand Luke
Hombre
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

What a wonderful man both on and off the stage.
He gave away all the millions he made off his line of food products.

Married for 50 years and you never heard any scandal or gossip about him.

Paul Newman -- America will miss you. ♥♥♥

Enjoyed his work. It's a sign we're all getting older when stars from our youth pass away - George Carlin, Newman, etc.

Ya did great work on and off screen, Paul. RIP

The next time one of those FUCKS at Fox News tell you about those Hollywood types remember Paul Newman, a LIBERAL. A man whos Legacy will not only be about his Acting Career, but his work for the Poor an the young Cancer victims, which he served his life to help.

Paul Newman was an IDOL, long before AMERICAN IDOL became an American staple. His work for those of us who need a hand will never be forgotten, God speed Mr. Newman, thanks for the MEMORIES!!!!

We won't see his equal again. He was a terrific person as well as being one of the foremost talents of the 20th and early 21st centuries. Vaya Con Dios, Paul. You will be missed.

He had the one thing that the vast majority of Hollywood 'elite' lack - CLASS!

I forgot about cat on a hot tin roof. elizabeth tailor was some hot shit in that movie too.

mendacity, its all mendacity.

Paul Newman as John Russell in Hombre my favorite of all the great movies he was in:

"We all die, just a question of when".

Fast Eddie Felson has put down his cue fer the last time.
Henry Gondorf has stung his last sting.
Judge Roy Bean's court is adjourned.
Cool Hand Luke has eaten his last egg.
Reggie Dunlop has skated his last game.
Ari Ben Canaan has completed his exodus.
Butch Cassidy is dead.

* deep sigh *

Paul Newman was a class act all the way around the board.

Spud met him briefly once when he was in Vancouver fer the Indy thing as part of the Newman-Haas racing team.

A gracious and good natured man who never acted like the star he so obviously was.

Spud'll miss him.

Thanx fer the great flicks and fer being such a honorable and caring individual in yer real life.

RIP Paul Newman.

Be Well.

"I'm a supporter of gay rights. And not a closet supporter either. From the time I was a kid, I have never been able to understand attacks upon the gay community. There are so many qualities that make up a human being... by the time I get through with all the things that I really admire about people, what they do with their private parts is probably so low on the list that it is irrelevant."

"The embarrassing thing is that the salad dressing is outgrossing my films."

"If you're playing a poker game and you look around the table and and can't tell who the sucker is, it's you."

~Paul Newman.

An extra-ordinary and exemplary life.

Be Well.

A goofy masterpiece. This news hits as hard as a Hanson brother's crosscheck.
"What we have here is a failure to communicate."
An incredible actor and a decent man; what more could you ask?
RIP, Mr. Newman

Crap, I completely forgot about Slapshot.

"Old time hockey, coach."

RIP

Nobody cares what your dumbass opinion is.

String tugged, NULLandVOID jerks. EVERY TIME!

So long Paul. You were a great actor, a good racer, made great food, a terrific philanthropist, Nixon put you on his Enemies list and you were one fine American.

Now THERE was a man.

Paul Newman was AWESOME. He left us so much to enjoy Thank you Paul Newman R.I.P.

Its a real hit in the gut! Newman's passing is a milestone - theres this entire "standard bearing" era and age thats just died off and disappeared - worse still is that theres come, nothing of even remotely good quality to replace it!

Team Porsche loses a true contributor.

Newman spoke of the "rubbish" of Hollywood.

On some late night talk show he described burning his tuxedo.

I have a Hickey Freeman and a Brioni in just one of too many closets.

Gratefully I have not worn them in almost a decade.

Perhaps a Paul Newman memorial tux incineration is in order.

Zatoichi-
I second that heresy.

Most thirsty movie ever made: Sahara, with Bogart

Sweatiest movie ever made: Cool Hand Luke

Newman spoke of the "rubbish" of Hollywood.

So did Charlton Heston, but because he was a Conservative he was lambasted

hypocrite

this site isn't into touchy feely. I liked both heston and newman and wc fields and ring lardner, more gin - it takes a whole lot of loving to make me feel good.

A strong man of character who put back much more than he ever took out for himself... one who lived humility within the spirit of greatness on every level... a man to learn from in every way...
"Thanks" for leaving a legacy that few tread but whom every soul should model...

"They brought they're fucking toys"!!! Reggie Dunlap to the owner of the Chiefs about the Hansons.

Reggie- "What are you guys doing"?
Hansons- "We're puttin' on the foil, coach"

That's just a snippet of one of my favorite Paul Newman movies. Of course there was:

Cool Hand Luke
The Sting (Robert Shaw was great in that movie as well)
The Color of Money
The Hustler

I've always looked at both him and Steve McQueen as very similar actors and they both succumbed to cancer. It is a sad day because anybody you likes a good movie know that good actors today are few and far between. RIP Paul Newman

My mom out-lived Mr. Newman. She died last winter at 86.
Paul Newman managed to look good to the end.

As an old cow boss of mine used to say. " I haven't met anyone that's got out of this world alive yet."

What we have here is a failure to communicate.

All those movies were great.

However, my personal favorite was "Nobody's Fool". It's a movie about quiet sacrifice and redemption. It is espcecially poignant since one of Newman's rivals in the film was a banker who made bad loans and skipped town.

I'm going to rent that one tonight.

Paul Newman was the original ROCKY.
I was trying to think which of his movies is my favorite, and it would have to be Somebody Up There Likes Me (1956), where he plays Rocky Graziano.
