You could almost see McCain losing it last night. His eyes were wide with rage especially when Obama was hammering him about his bad judgement leading into the Iraq war.

Obama, McCain Spar on War, Fiscal Crisis in First Debate.

Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama showcased different priorities for the nation's economy and foreign policy in the first of three presidential debates, an event that featured sharp exchanges, some agreement, and no knockout punches or major gaffes.

Their divergent views on the war in Iraq produced some of the sharpest displays. Sen. McCain chastised Sen. Obama for opposing an increase in troops that helped turn the war around. Sen. Obama slammed Sen. McCain for supporting the war in the first place.The Iraq dispute underscored the fundamental messages each candidate hoped to communicate in the foreign-policy debate. The 72-year-old Sen. McCain, the Vietnam war hero, tried to paint his 47-year-old rival as dangerously naive, while Sen. Obama tried to paint his rival as a dangerous hawk."There are some advantages to experience and knowledge and judgment, and I honestly don't believe that Sen. Obama has the knowledge and experience," Sen. McCain said at the debate's close. "I don't think I need any on-the-job training. I'm ready to go at it right now."Earlier, Sen. Obama blasted Sen. McCain for off-the-cuff hawkish statements. "John, you're absolutely right that presidents have to be prudent in what they say," he said, addressing his opponent directly. "But coming from you who in the past have threatened extinction for North Korea and sung songs about bombing Iran, I don't know how credible that is."The candidates met amid a crisis rocking the nation's financial infrastructure, and the moment transformed the debate -- which was supposed to be devoted entirely to foreign policy and national security -- into a clash over their domestic agendas as well. Much of the first half centered on the economy, giving each candidate the chance to spotlight his intentions regarding taxes and spending."

I agree---McCain was visibly angry during the debate. I think he refused to look at Obama in part because he was afraid that would overwhelm his powers of self control.

Straight out of the box, McCain lying about the letter Eisenhower wrote on the eve of D-Day.

Why did you focus in on the bracelets and not the points being made about them?

I honestly kept thinking of y'all last night when I saw McCain....

DOC---That Eisenhower letter is famous to history wonks, something McCain apparently is not. There was irony in that Ike wrote that letter taking sole responsibility for a military failure if one occured and McCain takes responsibility only for those parts of Iraq he likes.

If I was an adviser to either of those guys, and the OTHER guy brought it up first, I'd counsel "Let it go" to my guy.

It sounds so stupid and 5th gradeish saying "I've got one too."

Sorry I misunderstood you. I understand your point. I think Obama could have been better, but more so could have McCain. And it was McCain who needed at least a triple from this debate.

I freakin' DID pay attention to the points.

But it was kind of a snoozer.

Both get a "B" in my book.
McCain held his own.
Obama did good enough.

But there were no "gotcha" moments, nothing people will be watching 20 years from now.

I don't think *that* debate moved *anyone* from one side to the other.

Doesn't McCain look like He has a bad case of crabs cause He sure looked uptight.

I did think the whole "McCain will refund 300 billion" vs. "Obama will increase spending 800 billion" was interesting and informative--if true.

I believe that Obama mentioning His bracelet was imparative He did so. McCain in esence was trying to declare He loved the soldiers more than Obama which is untrue. McCain was being an asshole and Obama knew it.

This is what Eisenhower wrote, I believe, in the case of defeat in the landings.

It is NOT a letter of resignation.

McCain's greatest achievment last night was to get through it, but he showed time and time again that he is TOO OLD and too befuddled, with a total lack of the charm of Ronald Reagan (and that means nothing to half the electorate).

And that means we would be bringing on President Palin and her Neo-Con Cheneyites.

Where does this AFLAC stuff come from?

Kirk it is Her hoity toity redneckish squawky voice. She sounds like the Aflac duck with the Thanks but No Thanks diatribe. It's like oh You know that brake wear indicator on Brake pads. I mean really listen to Her sometime without picture and just imagine the Aflac Duck giving a speech. You will understand then.

McSame looked like he had lock jaw and a stiff neeck. He should have just stuck his hand in his jacket front and declared "Able was I ere I saw Palin."

And all his comments on Reagan 7 in the last half hour alone-doesn't he remember there have been three OTHER presidents in the last 20 years?
Though it was nice that he slammed Reagan for failing in afghanistan and beirut and commended Clinton on Bosnia and kosovo...
