A $100,000 state grant for a botanic garden in Englewood that then-state Sen. Barack Obama awarded in 2001 to a group headed by a onetime campaign volunteer is now under investigation by the Illinois attorney general amid new questions, prompted by Chicago Sun-Times reports, about whether the money might have been misspent.

Spin away.

This proves he was more than the Illinois State Senate mouthpiece, doesn't it?

$100,000 Grant?
Oh golly-gee whiz!
At the same time bushie's butt-buddies have been defrauding the Gov. of HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS in Iranqistan?
You guys are too stoopid to even breath on your own.

Aside from your self-retorting retort, FrankF3.5", you apparently have no principles whatsoever. If corruption is bad then $100,000 worth of it should be enough. What is the requisite dollar amount before you start to care? Apparently it's somewhere between "Obama" and "Bush."

Frank2.5 doesn't undertand that you learn to walk before you run. I have no doubt that Obama will know how to deal with larger sums of money at the Federal level.

Spin away.

"Madigan's office has notified Obama's presidential campaign of the probe, which was launched this week. But Obama's actions in awarding the money are not a focus of the investigation, Smith said."

What's there to spin? Obama awarded the money, he didn't decide how to spend (or not spend) it. If I give you $100 and you piss it away on whores and meth, am I responsible when that money is gone?

Ness,

In right wing world, guilt by association of Dems is damning enough.

I guess this means that Bush is as guilty as Abramoff, Libby, etc.

" If I give you $100 and you piss it away on whores and meth, am I responsible when that money is gone?"

Well let's see. First, if your example was analogous, you wouldn't be giving me your money, you'd be giving me taxpayers' money. So it really isn't the same, because someone who arranges a government grant for someone else is inherently making some sort of pledge that the money is for what he is saying it will be for. And that it won't just go to another person who profits off the poor who happens to be the wife of a former volunteer.

So Joe, how is it Obama's fault that the money was not spent in the correct manner?

First, if your example was analogous, you wouldn't be giving me your money, you'd be giving me taxpayers' money.

Quit being so obtuse.

inherently making some sort of pledge that the money is for what he is saying it will be for.

Sure. But what does that have to do with how the actual recipient uses it? You're telling me that Obama is responsible for keeping track of every dollar that he is able to earn for his constituents?

"So Joe, how is it Obama's fault that the money was not spent in the correct manner?"

When you take $100,000 of taxpayers' money and hand it to someone, you have a duty to ensure that they do what they said they would do with the money. Obama never did that. If you want to pretend that Obama didn't know that his friend of 11 years was not going to spend more than $3,000 of the money on the garden he said he would build, then I understand. Democrats love pointing to the fact that the do-nothing democrat attorney general in Illinois has never accused Obama of any wrongdoing. I say, so what? It doesn't surprise me any more than it should surprise you.

"You're telling me that Obama is responsible for keeping track of every dollar that he is able to earn for his constituents?"

Should the standard for every dollar be the same for dollars that go to groups headed by his friends?

Obama never did that.

Source?

Should the standard for every dollar be the same for dollars that go to groups headed by his friends?

Way to answer the question, Socrates.

"Source?"

Duh. The article shows that the money wasn't spent properly. So either Obama didn't verify that the money was spent properly, or he didn't do a very good job of it.

"Way to answer the question, Socrates."

No, no politician should ever have to keep track of any dollar they "earn" for their constituents, as you put it. Now - answer my question - should the standard of tracking "every dollar 'earned' for a politician's constituents" be the same, regardless of whether the money is going to a group run by that politician's friend?

When you take $100,000 of taxpayers' money and hand it to someone, you have a duty to ensure that they do what they said they would do with the money.

So McCain should be held accountable for all the billions lost in Iraq?

Yes, 726, he should. Any other stupid questions?

What makes that a stupid quesion?

Or are you just being an asshole?

college boy. right?

Moron. Right?

"If corruption is bad then $100,000 worth of it should be enough. What is the requisite dollar amount before you start to care?"

You are correct. But the current reality is that nobody gets to the top of either party without being dirty. So we have to sift through varying degrees of scumbagishness. In that context, someone who steals tens of millions is better than someone who steals tens of billions (and kills 4,000+ Americans to do it). A $100K theft is almost cute by today's standards.

I'm not voting for any Dems or Reps so I'm not saying this as an excuse to vote for Obama. I don't think anyone should vote for him or McCain.

Perhaps that's the kind of garbage you have to deal with when you vote for major party politicians. I have never done so and won't be doing so anytime soon. They all need to be thrown out of office if our country is ever going to get anywhere.

Lookie at Joe trying to paint himself as an independent like Palin trying to paint herself as a reformer.

I've never said I was an "independent." I have said that I am a libertarian. What do you care?

"Lookie at Joe trying to paint himself as an independent"

I've seen him criticize people from both sides of the fence quite often.

My brain automatically categorizes most people here as interchangable partisan douchebags who spout one of two sets of talking points. I literally can't tell them apart. Joe is one of the few posters I can remember from one post to the next because he doesn't easily fall into one shitpile or the other.

I'd put you in that same category. Rare to see someone thinking for themselves on this site.

And, as most threads that make the Obama/Biden campaign look less than perfect, this one gets a few posts and then goes eerily silent. So much for liberals being open-minded.

I'm really only posting this because I want my thread to stay above AmericanUnitard's thread.

What a bunch of douchebags. Null Set must be a great stalker if he saw that post so quickly.

Little help here?
