What is amazing to me is the utter lack of confidence in America coming from both sides of the spectrum. Even if we do have a recession it won't be the first time the US has fallen on hard times. I am way, way too young to remember the depression, but I do know people who were young adults in the 1930s, and it is amazing how many of them have a much brighter outlook on things. My grandmother's family lived on a farm in the middle of no where when it all started. In the early 30s my g. grandfather left for the city to find work. A few years ago a read some of the now ancient letters he used to send home while visiting my grandmother's over the holidays. It is interesting that he did usually he find work it's just that it would be at a wage which was 1/2 or less of what it would have been for the same job only a few years earlier . Things went on this way pretty much until the start of the war.

It took a long time, sure, but I don't think anyone would argue that we didn't overcome the ravages of the depression. If anything we were stronger than we were before. Unless you believe we are headed for even harder times, what would make this any different? (So much for the optimistic American mindset. ) Things will get better, and we will be stronger and wiser than before. So there.

In some ways maybe a few lessons from the school of hard knocks would actually benefit our country as a whole (unfortunately, at the expense of those who are already living it every day). We have had it so good for so long even the slightest hint that things may change causes everyone to run around, arms flailing about, saying the sky is falling. We are spoiled. You have to take him with a grain of salt. He's the guy who insisted Mushie was staying in power because he never heard of the people who were demanding he resign. He was making these statements the day before Mushie resigned. You can't take someone who offers their ignorance as proof of something seriously. And you can't expect someone who has no idea what is going on under his nose to have an accurate idea of events occuring thousands of miles away.

Obama, Rice, and Powell are not stupid. All three are of extraordinary intelligence. Stupid people generally do not rise to the positions of power that they have achieved.
