Hope walks arm in arm with fear, and so naturally enough Candidate Barack Obama is now reminding us, a la Roosevelt, that we have nothing to fear but fear itself and we must all pull together in a spirit of bipartisanship. Wrong.

Now that we see the bottom of the precipice, will we admit to ourselves that our plane was never really flying and that it was only descending at free fall all along and only kidding ourselves otherwise because the ground was so far away?

Neoliberalism.

Wow, there's a word you don't often see in the American press.

Thanks to Nutcase for posting this on another thread.

I admit, when I first heard the term in college, I had a hard time getting it for precisely your stated reason.

The way I explain it to my self is that its like American neoconservatism on a global scale. That could still be way off the mark, but I only minored in polisci.

"Wow, there's a word you don't often see in the American press."

Neoliberalism refers to the policies of free markets, free trade, deregulation and privatization on a global scale. It's commonly used outside the U.S.

In Latin America/Spanish Language media this word is very common and it applies to those who support the so-called Washington Consensus, in other words, "free" [sic] trade, lower taxes, less regulations, etc. Since they want to liberalize the economy they are called liberals or neoliberals. Modern Liberals here in America have given the word "Liberal" a totally new meaning, as opposed to Classic Liberals which today in America are considered libertarian or conservative. It's a mess.

But it's a well constructed mess which maintains the status quo.

" those who support the so-called Washington Consensus, "

"Washington Consensus" is basically a synonym for "neoliberalism".

Obama is going to fix everything. Don't worry.

Yeah, I'm a little bitter today. Couldn't hold back the sarcasm.

This crisis did not happen because of too much capitalism, it happened because there is no capitalism in the United Stated. This crisis was caused by FMA and FMAC and the wonderful Fed Res.

If anything this crisis is telling us to restore capitalism back to America, it is telling to get rid of the Fed Res, pronto.
