The disruption is anything that takes away from teh other students ability to learn. I was forced to take my hat off, which I had wore for 2 years straight when I entered highschool in the 90's. I hated it then, but the exact same excuse was made, it was a distraction. Even thought the white kid with a 12" afro in fron t of me was not!! I think kids should be allowed to wear what they want as long as it's not vulgar or profane or condoning violence. In this case their can be made a link for violence against obama.....the parent should have known better, but since I read his statements it's all about publicity and getting some money for him. There is a comment under the actual article stating that the kid should have as much a right to wear the shirt as one that says, "support the troops." while this statement is basically true, the comparison is not. The kid's shirt is against something rather is support of it. The kid also has every right to wear the shirt as someone who has a shirt that says, "screw the troops." Although the school would probably be justified in having a kid remove a "screw the troops" shirt for his personal safety more than any first amendment reasons.

As to the substance of the shirt, the poor misguided kid has it wrong. If Obama made decisions that caused a surge in Al-Qaida recruitment and gave terrorists the pretext they need for future attacks against American civilians, then I'd say he is the terrorists' best friend. Until then, this title belongs to the current president and his 72-year old toadie.

I was home this afternoon and Mrs Oohrah was watching FOX news like the good Republican she is. FOX had the kid and his father on, live.

One of the more awkward interviews I've seen in a while. Did anyone else catch it? The article conveys some of the kid's answers... and a little bit about the father. I feel for the kid - the dad is a goober's goober. The two FOX interviewers were trying to get comments from this backward pair but were having trouble pulling more than a couple words out at a time.

And, as the interview wrapped up, I mentioned to my wife how the FOX anchors were trying not to dump too much on the father - they were trying to be fair and not berate him for living his life through his kid, etc.

I feel the same way when I see young children marching with their lib protesting parents about global warming, the Iraq war, etc. Parents using kids to make political statements - it's within their rights to do so, yet I think we (as parents) often cringe when we see displays like this kid's t-shirt or kids protesting the war.

Hmmmm...The truth hurts even through a tshirt decoration...!!!! probably the only disruption was to the Dem principal...

Even if not a special day -- what's wrong with the shirt? I can still remember when I was in third grade and LBJ was running against Barry Goldwater for president. Our teacher got us into the election and its processes. Although 'theme' tshirts weren't around back then (aamof, we could not wear t-shirts at all except as an undershirt. Only button collared shirts then) we were encouraged to wear campaign buttons for the candidate of our choice.

Although I realize the contents of his shirt are a lot more controversial than the buttons we wore in 1966, the issue would have died a quiet and natural death.

As I said, I remember this lesson well as a positive learning experience. What will this kid remember?

also, I think it is the truth in the statement of the shirt that has caused most to get their 'panties in a wad'... and this kid will learn a lot out of this.. unfortunately, it will be a lot of negative lessons from a lot of ignorant people...

When I was a sophmore in high school (thankfully the only semester I spent in a public high school), the Beatles were just breaking. One kid got so caught up in the whole Beatlemania thing that he started to grow out his hair in the mop-top manner that the then-German girl friend of Lennon in Hamburg had come up with. (Ingrid somebody or other, but I digress...)

One late March afternoon, I saw him being briskly escorted out the front door by the vice principle who had wrapped a couple feet of 2" scotch tape around the kid's head to "keep his hair out of his eyes." The kid was being expelled for a "dress code" violation and (rumor had it) his parents had to take him to a hospital to have the tape surgically removed. When he came back a couple of weeks later, he looked like they'd removed it with a weed whacker.

But that was 1963 and things were much different then. For example: wearing any kind of denim pants were considered a sure sign of juvenile delinquency and were high on the list of prohibited school apparel. Today, that vice principle would be cooling his heels in jail for assault on a minor.

Mandatory school uniforms, all the way through k12 would put a stop this and a whole lot of other nonsense real quick.

dutch: We had similiar dress codes in my school until I was a junior ('72) Boy's hair could not touch the ears or collar of the shirt. No tshirts as outer garments. No holes in jeans, but then, no one wanted holes in jeans! Girls' skirts had to touch the floor when they knelt. No facial hair, of course, and sideburns could not be below the ear. No shorts. In '72 it changed to allow long hair for boys, but the hair could not be so long that it could be pulled back into a pony tail. Rest of the dress code was still in place

I'd make the kid change his shirt simply for esthetic reasons. Did they use a ball point pen? If you're going to make a "statement" at least buy a frickin sharpie. Did the red "Terrorists" bleed through onto the kid's back? He probably left the image in reverse on his desk chair - suspended for tagging by accident, in reverse.

Politics aside, what a bunch of idiots. The kid shouldn't be suspended, he should be forced to take a basic art course and at least learn the proper choice of "media." Unfortunately, it was probably his dad that did the rendering.
