A gunman has killed 10 people at a college in the town of Kauhajoki, Finland, before shooting himself. A day earlier, suspect Matti Juhani Saari, a culinary student at the school, was detained and released by police after posting an Internet video of himself firing a gun.

It's Finland an winter's coming. What else you got to do?
I understand the NRA wants Bush to grant him posthumus citizenship so he can get a shot at being on their Wall of heroes.

Raaawk! Kidding!

I suppose they'll pull that .22 gun from his 'Cold Dead Hands' now...

Brady is trying to do that. If you would pull your head out of your ass fore a moment you would realize this isn't good press for the NRA.

FTA: On the video, the gunman says "you die next" before firing three times at the camera.

Ms Holmlund said: "Police were aware of this and spoke to him on Monday, September 22. However, the police officer on duty decided there was no need to terminate his gun licence."

No need? They started with this guy but they didn't Finnish.

The gunman was given a "temporary licence" for a .22-calibre firearm this year, Ms Holmlund said.

Well, he did only use it temporarily.

Second school shooting in less than a year fer the Finns.

Not good.

Be Well.

I didn't know that any civilized nation - Finland included, the U.S. not - allowed civilians to run around loose with firearms. A corollary of "if you build it, they will come." herm

For what, prediciting that the left would blame the NRA for something that happened in Finland?

I didn't know the NRA had a chapter in Helsinki.

If you don't like it in this uncivilized nation why don't you do like your daddy did and run away?
The spawn of a slinky spined cut and runner didn't stand a chance, did you?

I didn't know that any civilized nation - Finland included, the U.S. not - allowed civilians to run around loose with firearms.

Actually, herm, it seems based on the article that Finland is worse. What the heck is a "temporary gun license"? In the U.S. in most places, you need to get at least a firarms ID to own a gun, and in many places (should be standardized nation-wide, but is not) you can't carry a gun without a fairly rigorous license-to-carry process involving training and vetting by the police. In Finland, it seems you can get a license just for a weekend. WTF.

should be standardized nation-wide, but is not

I must disagree. We are a nation of equal and separate states. States can set their own rules...nothing should be a national standard except national defense.

OK, boaz. But I live in a state that requires someone to get certified, to go to gun safety classes, to pass various hurdles in order to even get a basic ID card. A licnse to carry is next to impossibe to get. But just over the border (only 30 minutes from my house) guys can buy guns with their driver's license. If that's states rights as the founders envisioned it, I'm not sure I am comfortable with that. Besides, the Feds already say I cannot own a rocket launcher or machine gun. If states rights were truly in play here, couldn't Montana say it's ok for me to own those if they decided to, or have the states agreed in writing to that Fed restraint as a result of the Pretty Boy Floyd and Al Capone issues back 70 or 80 years ago? I don't know. Seems like a level playing field would be safer and easier to police. Or at least fairer.

The Finnishing touch to a good meal.

"States can set their own rules...nothing should be a national standard except national defense."

And yet, that isn't what the founding fathers envisioned. Or why they trashed the Articles of Confederation and wrote the Constitution.

Or at least fairer.

Ah, there's that word again, fair. Nothing in the U.S. needs to be fair except justice. Everything else should be on your own merit.

And yet, that isn't what the founding fathers envisioned.

I must disagree again here fyi, I think it is just what the founders wanted. For if you didnt like the policies of one state, you could move to one that you did like.

Bbbbbbbbut I thought Finland was one of those advanced (socialist) nordic countries were everythings is just soooo peaceful all the time, silly me.

When people say that society needs to be "fair" (wealth redistribution) in order to end crime that is an argument of social extortion, it is like a mobster telling you, "hey, if you don't pay me to look ater things, there could be an accident, a fire, or maybe someone breaks your window, yeah."

"I think it is just what the founders wanted" - Boaz

Then explain why they trashed the Articles of Confederation, which focused on states rights, and wrote the Constitution, which did not. If you do a side-by-side comparison of states rights in the two documents, you will see this rather emphatically.

FYI, the Articles of Confederation were weak in the sense that the central government (to the extent there was one) could not protect the states against external threats because, if I am not mistaken, the states could not be forced to do anything.

The 10th Amendment on the other hand leaves to the states the power not explicitly given to the Feds ore prohibited to the States.

Only ten?

Piker.

-Charles Whitman

Seems like he would have been too depressed to go to the trouble.

"Articles of Confederation were weak ..." - Member

They were regarded as "weak" because they didn't give the central govt enough clout to handle rebellions in states like PA and MA. Even Jefferson recognized this.

The idea of "leaving to states what isn't expressly given to the Fed govt" is the last part of the idea that the Fed govt should have control over issues which impact multiple states. What impacts particular states only is what states should regulate. The problem the writers of the Constitution faced was that they realized that the U.S. would change with time and they couldn't know all the ways it would. Which was why people like Jefferson believed that a _real_ revolt should occur periodically.

The killer left a youtube video of himself. In the beginning he points the gun at the screen and shoots and the rest of the video shows him at a shooting range. Rather chilling.

Or a Obama supporter, disappointed in the latest polls.

Only mongoloid idiots believe the NRA condones this.

We have a few here, plus our mentally ill Canadian.

What's this licensing and registration BS?

All i need in AZ is a drivers license.

Just in case the commucrats try to reimpose the ban, i've bought two more so called assault rifles and sufficient reloading supplies to last forever.

The pants pissing left can kiss my rosy red.

They have nothing to fear from me, an NRA life member, except a fire in my garage.

I thought it would be in Finnish, but now, he speaks in English. I guess he understood the mechanics of the global media, a video clip in English would be accessible to a lot of people.
