Fury at $2.5bn Lehman bonus
Nomura and Barclays table bids today for US giant's London operation as bank's administrator likens collapse to EnronJohn Waples and Danny Fortson
STAFF at Lehman's New York office who helped to cause the world's biggest corporate bankruptcy are to share in a $2.5 billion bonanza.

The bonus, which has been described by London staff as a "scandal" has been pledged by Barclays Capital, the British-based bank that last week acquired Lehman's American operation and took on 10,000 staff.

The $2.5 billion (1.4 billion) pot, which has been ring-fenced as part of the acquisition, has caused huge resentment among the 5,000 staff in the firm's European and Middle Eastern operations who are not guaranteed to be paid after this month. There are, however, hopes that half the jobs in Lehman's Canary Wharf office could be saved today by either Barclays or Nomura. Bids are being submitted for its UK equities and investment-banking business.

A Chapter 11 bankruptcy document filed by Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc says that Barclays has identified eight individuals out of the New York staff of 10,000 who are vital to make the deal succeed and a further 200 who are identified as "key". It is thought that these eight directors will be locked into two-year contracts worth between $10m and $25m a year.

The $2.5 billion had been accrued as part of the contribution to Lehman's group profits for the first nine months of the year. Barclays said there is no obligation to pay it out but analysts say the competitive pressure to keep key staff means he will have to. Bob Diamond, president of Barclays Capital, said: "You can expect us to manage this with the same discipline and performance terms that we have at BarCap".

The biggest bonuses are likely to be for Michael Gelband, the bank's global head of capital markets, and Eric Felder and Hyung Soon Lee, global co-heads of fixed income.

Barclays has asked all 10,000 employees to attend work tomorrow at the bank's Manhattan headquarters. Over the next three months

it will decide how many to keep and will use some of the bonus to meet remuneration packages. It is thought several thousand could be made redundant.

One London-based Lehman employee said: "It's an absolute scandal. I will never work for an American firm again. It looks like they are prepared to cut you off at the knees. Nobody from America has been in touch since we went into administration on Monday."

Another said: "Every other financial institution has been saved, including Lehman Brothers in the US, but it's another story for the employees in Europe."

Republican Party operatives in Michigan and Ohio, two battleground states, are planning to use the foreclosure epidemic to disenfranchise voters.

I don't get it. If people who have foreclosed homes are not allowed to vote, that will affect the republicans, too -- right? The lack of votes from both sides would be a wash.

Or is the implication that it is more likely that democrats have their homes foreclosed? If so, why is that? Are democrats less fiscally responsible? Republicans are smart enough to buy homes in their price range whereas democrats tend to live beyond their means?

Anyone who challenges this is insulting the democrats.

............you have to wonder why are trying to spread DEMOCRACY around the world, when we have such a scarcity of it at home...........

......and.........

.......there are elements of the Republican Party that are preparing to take us lower........you see.......

........democracy is not in their best interest.......

.......if it was.....they would abhor the "dirty tricks".......

only an 8.22? That doesn't make any sense. I can drink beer and watch sports on a regular basis, so we should at least be an 8.5

The McCain campaign has also directly undertaken "dirty tricks" in the two states. According to Cincinnati.com, an absentee ballot request form sent out by the McCain campaign to 1 million voters in Ohio, many of them Democrats and independents, inaccurately reproduced the state's absentee ballot request form and has been ruled improper.

Typical GOPher fuckhead.

Last election it is alleged that well over 3 million votes were disqualified through the practices described in this article and caging as well.

Minorities votes were several times more likely to be nullified than white folks.

One of BushCo's oppo researchers, Tim Griffin was rewarded with a cushy USA job fer his undemocratic activities.

His counterpart Monica Goodling was rewarded by becoming Alberto Gonzales' flunky.

The rethugs natural base of the "the haves and the have-mores" are not enuff to win them elections so they grab their big numbers by stringing along the evDEVILicals and Talibaptist and by disqualifying votes by the millions and using other disenfranchising techniques.

Such scum are they.

Be Well.

.....it's not you I.Q. that we are discussing......

OK. I googled world democracy index on your request, skiz. I had heard about it, but never really paid attention to what it meant. After reading this, I think I think less of its significance.

As described in the report, the democracy index is a kind of weighted average based on the answers of 60 questions, each one with either two or three permitted alternative answers. Most answers are "experts' assessments"; the report does not indicate what kinds of experts, nor their number, nor whether the experts are employees of The Economist or e.g. independent scholars, nor the nationalities of the experts. Some answers are provided by public opinion surveys from the respective countries.

en.wikipedia.org

It doesn't sound like a number that was arrived at by a controlled process.

Don't get me wrong -- I think there is a lot of room for improvement here. But Americans are like petulant children. "WAAH! I want cheaper gas". "WAAH! I want more freedoms". "WAAH! I want, I want, I want, and I'll whine until I get what I want."

Sorry, that's just the way we are whether you choose to admit it or not. If you don't like it here, I'm sure there are a few billion people on this planet willing to trade places with you.

Apparently asking a student in a questionnaire for their permanent place of residence when registering to vote on campus is a problem for the Obama campaign and they have pressured the Virginia State Board of Elections to halt the practice.

hamptonroads.com

Norfolk election officials on Friday reluctantly loosened procedures for registering college students to vote after protests from presidential candidate Barack Obama's campaign and an admonishment from state election officials.

The Illinois senator's campaign complained that the Norfolk registrar's policy of sending a questionnaire to anyone applying to register from a college campus discouraged students from following through. The State Board of Elections asked general registrar Elisa J. Long to halt the practice.

Ahh the age old democrat ploy of accusing the other side of what you are doing yourself. Also having the media them doesn't hurt the democrat cause.

......you originally made the point that we were the most democratic country on the planet.......

......clearly we are not......

......yes..there are many worse and only a dozen plus better...but we need to be vigilant because we do not lead the world in freedom & democracy.....

......and....the Repubs make a clear & brazen effort at each election to deprive many voters of their democratic right through "dirty tricks"......

......don't take our democracy & freedoms for granted, this administration has demonstrated that they have a willingness to take them away and that they consider themselves to be Above The Law......
