At first thought I felt pity, as it might have been a robbery gone wrong, then I read these kids cut the phone line first. And brought a baseball bat with them, along with a gun (which was unloaded by the time the cops got to it). Sounds to me like they were planning for trouble, panicked at the last second, and decided to try and make it look like a robbery.

It was a mistake to cut the phone line first, and these kids will hang (or whatever the equivalent is) for it, as it's now premeditated. Their story of "We didn't think anyone was home" falls down in light of the cut phone line.

Course, they are kids so ummm.. really.. they shouldn;t.. I mean c'mon. How old IS 14, anyway?

It is to say, if the day before this murder, the 14 year ld kid was blowing his gym teacher; he would be a defenseless little boy not understanding the realities of his actions. But today, all of the sudden he's a hardened criminal for blowing someone's brains out, who fully understood the realities of his actions? It seems disingenuous. I'm not saying don't do SOMETHING to these kids; but you can't try them like adults. Kids are kids. It's not right.

They're old enough to realize they are harming somebody and can potentially kill somebody when hitting them with a bat. In 1 and 2 years, these kids would be able to drive. If they haven't learned the value of life by the time they are 14 and 15, they probably never will.

These kids already had prior convictions as well.

These kids took weapons to a theft where they thought nobody would be home.

Somebody was home and when discovered, they decided and used the weapon...to a lethal result. They swung the bat six times.

Given that they had priors and then they broke into a house to steal, and then decided to kill somebody when discovered does show that they are hardened criminals in my book.

They need to be locked up for a long time...not just a couple years in juvie.
