Wick Allison: The more I listen to and read about "the most liberal member of the U.S. Senate," the more I like him. Barack Obama strikes a chord with me like no political figure since Ronald Reagan. To explain why, I need to explain why I am a conservative and what it means to me.

Good article.

"It gives me comfort just to think that after eight years of George W. Bush we will have a president who has actually read the Federalist Papers."

That is the best sentence in the article. I am tired of having an uninformed moron who consistently speaks in incoherent sentence fragments as the face of the U.S. in the world.

Damn, that is a good article. Concise and earnest.

I have to admit I'd never heard the quote from Hoffer. I'm adding it to my mental list of quotes to remember but will forget, LOL. Nah, I think that one will stick.

Some females may have their own legit reasons not to high5 Sarah Palin. And some are simply not just ready to accept her --- just out of plain jealousy. It takes time to embrace someone who just emerge from nowhere --- And Sarah has not been 'hazed' yet in their minds.

Excellent article.

Even better informed conservatives can clearly see Obama is the right choice

Now that everyone's financial life is hanging in the balance more and more will view Obama as the safe choice to prudently get the economy and financial dealings back on track.

It was, after all Bush and McCain, "new kind of conservatives" who got us in all this mess by encouraging the opposite of conservative oversight and management of financial institutions.

TakeitEZ-
But Palin was against a bridge to nowhere, so how are these "females" to cross and give her a "high5"?!

TakeitEZ - so the reason I do not like Palin is cause I am jealous of her? Riiiiiiiight. Let me set you straight. She denies science, despite all the evidence to the contrary, she is all for her daughter having a choice but is quite happy to deprive me of mine, and if nothing else she advocates shooting wolves from aircraft, THAT alone disqualifies her to even exist as a human being let alone be the VP. She is, not to put too fine a point on it, a vile creature who has no right to exist on my planet and use useful oxygen. Ya got it?

And damn I allowed someone to use a thread which talks about an absolutely brilliant column into a discussion about Palin. I am sorry. Go back to the article and ignore my rant.

Litlebrit...

I said some women....

TakeitEZ -

I love Palin because she gives me hope that even the least qualified amongst us can reach the stars if only we hop on the coattails of our betters and smile real pretty!

She saddens me, though, because until I manage to replicate her feat, I may be stuck with her as my president and will suffer for her lack of intellectual rigor and natural ability and her overabundance of wacky religious beliefs.

Do you see how torn I am???

Today it is conservatives, not liberals, who talk with alarming bellicosity about making the world safe for democracy.-- It is John McCain who says Americas job is to defeat evil,-- a theological expansion of the nations mission that would make George Washington cough out his wooden teeth.

This kind of conservatism, which is not conservative at all, has produced financial mismanagement, the waste of human lives, the loss of moral authority, and the wreckage of our economy that McCain now threatens to make worse.

As our local yokel James Dean always says...
FACT!

Takit - I am a rabid, completely out of the park, without apologies environmentalist, I am like alot of women in that respect. Palin will never, ever, ever represent me, the photo of her on her couch with a bear skin complete with head on it, which she draped herself on, sickened me, truly sickened me. I am some women, and I count.

Before this thread degenerates into sniping (something I know a little about), it has many salient points. I too cannot trust McCain, and, though I find Obama abhorrent on many issues, he may be the only one that can provide fresh ideas. This country could use a serious jolt.

Longtime DC resident McCain may be a bit too entrenched to exact change. He too much a cog in the system. Palin is a joke. The fact that McCain feels that she is the best qualified demonstrates to me that he is still the good soldier, taking orders from his superiors.

I don't think McCain will revert back to being the maverick that I admired in 2000. He hasn't shown any evidence of doing so.

We need someone that is truly an outsider. Much like Reagan was. I agree with Wick Allison. We know what we are getting with McCain. Obama is a roll of the dice. It's a gamble I'm willing to take.

Litlebritdifrnt, I get your point.

I said some women have their reasons not to like Sarah, and you are one of them.

Also there are some women who will reject her out of plain jealousy, and you are not one of them.

(Centuries ago I tasted bear meat (dried one and tasted like rubber); not anymore. Haven't tasted moose yet --- maybe I'll ask for it when/if I take a cruise to Alaska).

Lee - that was a very eloquent comment and I commend you for it.

This is a good column. Allison makes clear the difference between Conservatives and Republicans. Too many feeble (read Liberal) minds around here think they are the same thing. They are not.

I still believe that Osama is not ready for prime time. Regardless of his intellect and intentions, he's not had enough experience. He'll go up against 30-year senators who still expect their pork, and know how to get it.

The fiscal problem is not tax rates but profligate spending.

From the article:

Barack Obama is not my ideal candidate for president. (In fact, I made the maximum donation to John McCain during the primaries, when there was still hope he might come to his senses.) But I now see that Obama is almost the ideal candidate for this moment in American history. I disagree with him on many issues. But those dont matter as much as what Obama offers, which is a deeply conservative view of the world. Nobody can read Obamas books (which, it is worth noting, he wrote himself) or listen to him speak without realizing that this is a thoughtful, pragmatic, and prudent man. It gives me comfort just to think that after eight years of George W. Bush we will have a president who has actually read the Federalist Papers.

Most important, Obama will be a realistB. I doubt he will taunt Russia, as McCain has, at the very moment when our national interest requires it as an ally. The crucial distinction in my mind is that, unlike John McCain, I am convinced he will not impulsively take us into another war unless American national interests are directly threatened.

Every great cause,-- Eric Hoffer wrote, begins as a movement, becomes a business, and eventually degenerates into a racket.-- As a cause, conservatism may be dead. But as a stance, as a way of making judgments in a complex and difficult world, I believe it is very much alive in the instincts and predispositions of a liberal named Barack Obama.

Think what real conservatives are thinking:

DOW - January 20, 2001 - 10,488
DOW - September 17, 08 - 10,609.66

The Dow went from 3300 to 10700 under President Clinton

Lack of control in spending, by the Republicans, is the mantra most heard, as the reason to vote for Obama! But hasn't he proposed an excessive amount of spending, while using the same 'tax the rich' money to pay for it all?

To change from someone who spent to much TO someone who will spend more is good management, RIGHT? It IS also change of a sort!

Exactly what is that breath of fresh air, his relevant youth, as compared to the 'silver haired fox'? His grasp of the situation and clear enunciation of the way out? Or just the idea that, 'he is the engine of change' we are in desperate need of? He sure can give a speech, and with a teleprompter, too!

You all say Palin is to inexperienced and never look at Obama's achievements in depth! You say McCain is to ingrained in this system to be the agent of change, or to OLD! Yet you never appear to look behind Obama at Biden, who was in the Senate 6 years LONGER than McCain and never had any other job BUT senator, and IS almost as old!

Bringing change is a challenge when half the money used is from the one who had it minted originally!

Sarah is a natural --- her homespun tales, excitement, delivery, all speak well of her public presence and in keeping the audience wanting for more....

One thing I detected is that in her excitement she even dared questioners to stump her --- to try. Appreciate the confidence, but don't say that again. New in the national scene, in my perception, I think that comes across like an excited kid in a candy store. Your charm is working wonders; its your gravitas that needs to come across.

Things can be twisted by your opponents and used against you. Be very stingy when it comes to daring others --- remember, Bush's detractors tried to use 'BRING IT ON' against him.

As for Obama, "we were the ones we've been waiting for" didn't come across nice to me. Just an opinion.

TAKITEZ

That saying was first repeated by Maria Shriver, wife of California Gov. Arnie.

It's an old Hope Indian saying.

Hopi

Gary Hart made the mistake of daring the media and look how that turned out. Sarah better watch her step; this isn't the Miss Alaska contest we are talking about. She can't Miss Congeniality her way through every question or investigation. Spunky and perky only take you so far when it comes to presidential politics.

Sarah is a natural --- her homespun tales, excitement, delivery, all speak well of her public presence and in keeping the audience wanting for more....

Some of the bloom is already off the rose: Palin is starting to drop in the polls, including among women:

www.cbsnews.com

Obama leads McCain 54 percent to 38 percent among all women. He holds a two point edge among white women, a 21 percentage point swing in Obama's direction from one week ago.

Palins favorable rating stands at 40 percent, down 4 points from last week. Her unfavorable rating, which stands at 30 percent, has risen eight points in the same time period. Her favorable rating among women has fallen 11 points in the past week.

The liberal media is itching for a gotcha moment to diminish Sarah --- anyone denying that would be lying.

CNN: acting like surrogates of Obama.

MSNBC: demoted Matthews and Olbermann.

Time: Joe Kline, mad at McCain, said 'we won't back down', as he perceived McCain played the victim of the liberal bias and succeeded in making the latter looked ugly.

....too many to cite.

******************************
****

Of course, with the unfriendly liberal media after her in a relentless manner, some color is expected to wear off --- maybe her biography coming out on October 10 (Zondervan) might help a bit.

The reps has done a good job in rationing her for interviews --- makes it more precious and pulls more viewers --- Gibson, Hannity, and then Couric.

Back on topic here. Amazing article!!!!!!!

As a Republican backing Obama myself, this article articulated so well my thoughts and feelings about why I like Obama.

I'm going to print at least a dozen copies and snail mail them to my GOP friends. If each "Obamacan" did the same, we could make a difference.

As much as I'm addicted to politics and blogs right now, I'm realizing that while fighting back and forth is fun, I don't think we are changing anyone's mind here...

The author says "it gives me comfort just to think that after eight years of George W. Bush we will have a president who has actually read the Federalist Papers."

It just goes to show how far the GOP has degenerated that conservatives who oppose most of what Obama stands for are willing to put that aside and vote for him because there is nothing and nobody currently in their natural political home that they can vote for any more. Palin was not picked to appeal to them and she must have been the final straw for many of them.

"Takit - I am a rabid, completely out of the park, without apologies environmentalist, I am like alot of women in that respect. Palin will never, ever, ever represent me, the photo of her on her couch with a bear skin complete with head on it, which she draped herself on, sickened me, truly sickened me. No wonder joe biden is upset with Obama for selecting him instead of Hillary, hell he is the invisible man when it comes to the media. Palin has five stories alone with her name on them biden has zero. Granted all six "STORIES" pardon the pun are negative but most intellectuals understand typical liberal Dumpacrat Media bias. Back to to poor joe biden does anyone know where he is, the last time I saw him in the news he was trashing

Weak (cough) weak..... I don't go to fast food joints because it's fatty food for the the masses. When I do it meat, it's from my local market (out doors, local farmer). I think these fast food places will lose there places in American diets was REAL healthy food takes the place of this shit... But for now into the market system gives us a choice...

"...... thnks to Reagan's economic policies reaching full fruition."

AU, you forgot the rest of the sentence.

typical liberal Dumpacrat Media bias.. Ataboy...

Whaa!!! Whaaa!!! I want my mommy!!!!

Dude people are sick and tired of 8 years of this shit (as they were of Bill 8 years ago). Palin is kept in a closet next to here S&M outfit. The media has to GUESS who she is and what she believes. Until she makes herself available to the media, she is making herself vulnerable...

Vern, you were the guy saying that by the end of the W era, the DOW would be at 17,000-18,000? I think it was you...( not trying to be a prick....OK, OK a little;-)).

Let's take a look at Jimmy Carter's record 16 percent inflation, 22 percent interest rates. Nevermind the hostage crisis that lasted 444 days...

Eric Hoffer, a grape picking, poorly educated genius. His genius was to extract truth about human psychology from watching people's behavior.

Read "The True Believer" and understand the world we live in and the real dangers posed by religiousd fanatics, like Osama bin Laden and Pat Robertson better.

"Dude people are sick and tired of 8 years of this shit"

Dude what is Obama's magic plan, truth is neither him nor his V.P aka the invisible man have a clue.

It gives me comfort just to think that after eight years of George W. Bush we will have a president who has actually read the Federalist Papers."

Lke you have actually read them.

Takeit: 75% of the electorate believe Plain was picked to help McSame win, not on her qualifiactions and 60% say she's unfit to replace him as Prez.
THose numbers cross parties.

How can a potential President sit in a hate filled racist church for two decades and listen to such vile statements as "GOD DAMN AMERICA NOT GOD BLESS AMERICA" and at the same time read the federalist papers and claim to understand them. What was Obama's excuse for sitting in that church and nodding his head up and down for twenty years ???? Either he was complicit or Ignorant either way he is unfit to serve as President.

Ata-Ask John "Ihearthagee" McDone.

Face it dude, Palin was a weeks worth of good news for McSame-now that old bugaboo of the Right-reality is setting in and President Obama is (nearly) in da House!

Back up by 4 or 5 % depending on the polls. Of course, Palin could still claim 5 immaculate conceptions and have defeated Putin in a snowball fight, but that would only endear her to the suckers who already believe the rest of the GOP's bullshit.

If "Bullshit" were snow Obama and the MSM would be a f***ing blizzard. As I pointed out before Obama is either ignorant or complicit for sitting in a hate filled church for twenty years and not noticing little subtle things like "GOD DAMN AMERICA NOT GOD BLESS AMERICA". By the way has ANYONE seen the invisible man joe biden????

Did you ever see the actual full clip of Wright?
Ignorance is bliss! Or in this case, ignorance is a vote for McCain.

I only watched it once all the way through, If you care about our country Dumpacrat or Republican such vile putrid crap is hard to watch...

ATaxpayer = fool!

#39 | Posted by retnluvnit

Big fucking deal constitutional law is part of all law school curriculum, having read the papers does not mean he believes what he read or that he agrees with them... he absolutely is not a federalist, never was part of the federalist society and espouses anti federalist positions. stupid libs think reading is the same as acting not sure how law school and community organizer prepares one for president...but keep supping the cool aid.

Wright is still the petulant rights deflection. Yes, he's an angry black guy working out of a church that did well for a hard scrabble community. His anger -- unproductive and toxic as it is -- is also , somewhat understandable, considering his generation and the nations history. To deny that presents a deluded view denying our histories treatment of a race, But still, the anger is unproductive. I've got relatives who use the n word frequently, would never vote for a black person, and I find their views reprehensible, but they have also done good things within our family and for other. I still love them, separate their fear and ignorance from the good in their hearts. Look, vote for what you believe, and if you believe that Obama is some Marxist holdover who wants to bring the nation down -- I'd tend to consider you a fool. If you believe McCain and Palin represent the nations best chance -- you're an even bigger fool, willingly blinded by age-old and long held prejudices about what it means to be an American. People say I don't know who Obama is. Well, get out more, bucko. I have a sense of him, like I have a sense of McCain. The former love his country, The latter is selfish, bitter old man who has tosses aside any principals he may have had in order to be President. Elect the latter and the world laughs. And if you don't think the world doesn't matter, well, then,
your demise and irrelevancy is hearby guaranteed. Good day.

As I stated previously If "Bullshit" were snow Obama and the MSM would be a f***ing blizzard. Ether Obama is ignorant or complicit for sitting in a hate filled church for twenty years and not noticing little subtle things like "GOD DAMN AMERICA NOT GOD BLESS AMERICA".

Does Rove pay you to astroturf your silly assed bullshit?

Oh almost forgot you're an @ss

"When you perceive that a man is devoid of wisdom depart from him and speak no more"

So is that why you're leaving? So we don't have to speak to you anymore? What a considerate chap? Almost makes up for your idiocy!

Kingzilla nails it. Rightly or wrongly (rightly, I believe) Jeremiah Wright preached about the black experience that he underwent, probably in terms of how Jesus, another black man, would have seen it. I don't think that anyone should have to defend or someone "own" things he heard in church two decades ago, much less be expected to harrumph and walk out. herm

Were Guiliani the Republican nominee, no one would hold him responsible for the Catholic priest pedophilia scandals.

"Kingzilla nails it. Of course Obama gets a free pass because of liberal media bias if that was Palin the MSM would have been all over her, after all the Messiah can not be racist because he is bla**. As far as Kingzilla's analogy he is dead wrong Obama liked what he heard over the course of two decades the proof is he chose to sit there wagging his head in agreement NOT 20 years ago but OVER the course of 20 years... FACT...

Obama got a free pass?

What rock do you live under? It was in the media for months. There are very few people who haven't heard of Rev Wright and the controversy around him.

If you're going to make shit up, stop taking cues from the McCain campaign. Even Rove calls it bullshit.

I guess I did not get the memo about lawyers following Obama around to find any and all tabloid tidbits to jump on. Palin's church was made to look like a bunch of crazed snake handlers by the MSM not to mention almost every two bit actor in Hollywood has to take a cheap shot. Tell me Obama is under the same scrutiny as Palin that's the bullshit. Review Chuck Gibson's interview peering down through his Eckerd spectacles wagging his foot and acting like a condescending @ss and tell me Obama would be treated in the same manor. Are you not aware that most of the MSM has a liberal bias ???

That's what I thought...

ATAXPAYER -- I guess one sees what they want to see due to their political bent. Me, I saw talk radio and the morally bankrupt idiot delights at Fox use Obama and Wright as a new mantra to some kind of faux conservative deliverance. I saw Gibson and Stephonopolus (sic) lay into Obama like he was some kind of criminal on the stand. I saw a press lavish praise and awe at a woman, the gun toting piece of shit with the glasses, who has now turned out to be a pathological liar, I also saw a press cowed by bullshit accusations of anti-americanism falling down on the job and facilitating the nations entry into this morally corrupt war. Yes, I did also see a fascination with Obama that bordered on the syncophatic at times, and it bothered me as it was burying the real message. That said, I'm a liberal, love football, action and horror flicks, wish we finished the job in Afghanistan/Pakistan, love making money -- but know I have a responsibility to my country and neighbors. Yes, one sees what they want to see. What I see is McCain's free ride with the press and his maverick fallacy is finally at last over. And Empress Palin has no clothes. More and more are seeing it as well. America is changing, accept it, or be left out with nothing but your anger and your myths. Be well.

When I do it meat, it's from my local market (out doors, local farmer).

Chill has been here for years under various names, bragging how he only buys local. Which is bullshit.

He thinks going to the quaint little farmer's market, he's only buying local.

Take a clue, Chill (or whoever you are this month). Many of those people are not farmers. They buy their stuff from the same wholesalers that supply Kroger and Safeway. If you buy meat there, it probably came from a slaughterhouse in Kansas or Colorado.

It's OK if you want to play make-believe, and pretend that you live in 1923, but you are full of crap. If you really want to buy from local farmers, go find an Amish community. But spare the rest of us of your fantasies.

I got a picture of him around here somewhere. You know the one. He's kneeling at prayer with God's Grace shining down on Him.
