As opposed to Saint John the Dishonest and Saint Palin the Corrupt? You really want somebody as Sec. Def. whose qualifications were carrying Palin's school books and playing with GI Joes?

Then again, that would still be a step up from C-in-C "Iraq will be short, cheap and afghanistan was won in 2005" Mcsame. Or as Chuckie Keaton called him, "my Arizona bitch".

Constitution Day!

Ok, I think I fixed it now. Let's see how it works.

And the Mets and their fans are melting down once again. Gotta love Sept. baseball.

Visine, it gets the red out.

Kristine Anzalone sat with a pinched expression on her face yesterday as a judge told her that she would have to pay $10,000 in hospital bills for the roommate she poisoned with Visine.

Anzalone, 25, now of East Rockaway, pleaded guilty to spiking her roommate's iced tea, leaving him vomiting and bleeding from his rectum, prosecutors said. In addition to paying his medical bills, she will serve 3 years' probation and must obey an order of protection, acting State Supreme Court Justice William Donnino ruled in Mineola.

Anzalone had also been charged with taunting her roommate's pit bull into killing his Chihuahua, but those charges were later dropped.

No more naked shorts!

From now on, the practice of naked short selling will be onsidered fraud.

Nornal short selling is when you borrow stock, sell it, then hope it goes down in price, buy it back, pocket the difference, minus a broker commission I guess.

Naked shorting involves selling stock even if you don't know if the broker has it, in other words, you misrepresent you have it and sell it and then don't present the stock to the buyer.

This is the kind of common-sense regulation that everyone is for. The result of naker shorts is that there might be more short positions on a company than there are stock outstanding of that company. That certainly is a blatant distortion of the market.

GOP pollster Frank Luntz says voters will shift to Obama over economy

"I'm watching the polling and what's going to happen over the next 48 hours because I think you might see once again another shift," he said, noting that economic worries were infecting all sectors of the electorate. "I think -- having now lived this for 15 years in the mindset of the voters -- that it's going to trigger an even greater degree of change."

Sept. 17, 2008 | WASILLA, Alaska --

Sarah Palin has been touting herself as fiscal watchdog throughout her political career. But Palin's tenure as mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, was characterized by waste, cronyism and incompetence, according to government officials in the Matanuska Valley, where she began her fairy-tale political rise.

"Executive abilities? She doesn't have any," said former Wasilla City Council member Nick Carney, who selected and groomed Palin for her first political race in 1992 and served with her after her election to the City Council.

Four years later, the ambitious Palin won the Wasilla mayor's office -- after scorching the "tax and spend mentality" of her incumbent opponent. But Carney, Palin's estranged former mentor, and others in city hall were astounded when they found out about a lavish expenditure of Palin's own after her 1996 election. According to Carney, the newly elected mayor spent more than $50,000 in city funds to redecorate her office, without the council's authorization.

"I thought it was an outrageous expense, especially for someone who had run as a budget cutter," said Carney. "It was also illegal, because Sarah had not received the council's approval."

According to Carney, Palin's office makeover included flocked, red wallpaper. "It looked like a bordello."

Although Carney says he no longer has documentation of the expenditures, in his recollection Palin paid for the office face-lift with money from a city highway fund that was used to plow snow, grade roads and fill potholes -- essential municipal services, particularly in weather-battered Alaska.

Carney confronted Mayor Palin at a City Council hearing, and was shocked by her response.

"I braced her about it," he said. "I told her it was against the law to make such a large expenditure without the council taking a vote.

She said, 'I'm the mayor, I can do whatever I want until the courts tell me I can't.'"

The AP is reporting that Shirley McGreal, longtime friend of Dian Fossey, is supporting Obama.

Alma Rangel bought the condominium in Sunny Isles Beach, Fla., for $335,000 in 2004 and sold it two years later for $405,000, records show.

On disclosure forms, Rangel valued the unit at between $50,001 and $100,000 in 2004. The next year, he valued it between $100,001 and $250,000.

In 2006, Rangel disclosed the condo sale and listed its value accurately. But he later recorded the transaction as occurring in 2007, with a value between $100,001 and $250,000.

Adding to the confusion, Rangel indicated that the condo was a rental property but had generated no rental income.

just got power yesterday and phone today
so you KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS

heading to the GOLF COURSE AND RACE TRACK As soon as I can get there............

also fo.......I have heard through the vast right wing conspiracy network that we are going to hear a lot about the almost billion dollar earmarks from barrywayne........including a million for his lovely wifes employer........

The good news was Sarah Palin really had taken on the oil companies, with a windfall profits tax, cancellation of unused leases, and by moving ahead with a major gas pipeline that the oil companies would rather not see built.

Palin had become a bad Republican, an out of control governor, out Chavezing Hugo Chavez. With bonus checks for Alaskan fuel bills, Sarah Palin had the moxie to capitalize on the universal Alaska hatred for Exxon, festering since the spill in 1989.

If you were the most powerful multinational corporation on the planet, what would you do? How would you get rid of Sarah Palin and the fledgling independence movement against Big Oil she had sparked?

Big Oils solution? You Peter Principle Palin out of Juneau.

In the oil business, you know how to deal with your colonies. Simply put, you pit Alaskan against Alaskan with a Palin nomination to higher office.
Even easier than working with floundering national Republicans was working with a desperate John McCain, whose survival instincts are those of a sewer rat.

But of course, it gets worse. The National Campaigns discover and define Alaska for America. Sarah Palin is transformed by the Dems and their allies into a monster by people who dont know her.
The fight over values,-- conceals entirely Exxons agenda.

But not to worry, the worst of times will only get worse. With a deepening national depression and word spreading of free money and a moose in every freezer, thanks to the nomination, thousands of Alaskan wannabes will hit the Al-Can for Alaska, an RV Grapes of Wrath. Alaskas population will double and then triple. Palin will either be in DC in a one-term Vice Presidency or back as a lame duck Guv, abandoned by her Party and despised by the Dems who worked with her.

Alaskas Senator Ted Stevens is the lucky one, ready to take his sacrifice fly for Ben Stevens and Treavor McCabe, his office or his lumps and get his Presidential pardon. That wiley old fox must marvel at Exxons master counter-strategy for Alaska. The same Exxon who convinced America that the oil spill had been cleaned up and everyone was paid off found a way to stop Sarah Palin, her mini-revolt and its ripple effect, by giving her exactly what she wanted.

Excerpted from Steve Conn @ Counterpunch

ATTENTION HOUSTON --

Does everyone on DR who lives in Houston and surrounding areas have their electrical power back on yet? My local radio station here just said most people there are still without power and even food/water in some areas. Is it really that bad?

My sister lives northwest of Houston and still doesn't have power.

YES..........but it is getting better by the hour
I live close to the race track......(BIG SURPRISE< HUH?) and tuesday morning there were THREE THOUSAND electric trucks ALL from other states that left to help out. there are still from latest reports about 700,000 people still without power and gas lines are long BUT GETTING SHORTER. I was lucky with almost no damage at all but the damage is huge. everyday fema trucks loaded with ice and MREs' and water are being used by the THOUSANDS..........

Whats next Mr. President

The economy is tanking;
The financial industry is in turmoil;
We are fighting two seemingly endless wars;
National security has been compromised because of our dependence on imported oil and foreign manufacturers;
Our international reputation has been tarnished;
The electorate has been polarized;
The national debt has soared;
Manufacturing has been off shored;
Professional Jobs are being outsourced and off shored;
Illegal immigrants are overrunning the country;
To many businesses are not being held accountable for employing illegal immigrants;
The cost of heating oil, diesel fuel and gasoline is outrageous;
The cost of a college education is beyond the reach of to many families;
Joblessness is increasing;
To many families are living off their credit cards;
Poverty is increasing;
The biggest asset that most people own, their homes, has lost significant value;
Medical Insurance is beyond the reach of to many American families;
To many American families are losing their homes;
The current Republican presidential candidate, John McCain, is trying to distance himself from your policies; trying to present himself as a candidate of change.

What other disastrous policies do you have in store for us Mr. President? Havent the American people suffered enough?

It has to be disheartening to know that your presidency will be forever tagged with all of the aforementioned failures. However, the purpose of this message is not to torment you any further. The purpose of this message is to suggest a way of redeeming your presidency. I am proposing that you publicly renounce the ideology that led to the development of the ruinous policies that have caused so much anguish. Such a renunciation would discredit the ideology and reduce the likelihood that it could ever be used again to adversely impact the lives of the American people. Also, it would salvage your presidency by displaying your commitment to future generations of Americans.

How about it Mr. President? Give future generations of Americans a break; renounce the ideology that resulted in your failed policies.

Up to half of CenterPoint Energy's customers in Houston and surrounding areas may still be without power by Tuesday.

You know it's bad when even the lefties are calling for Pelosi's scalp.

they have had majority

Having the majority only entitled the Democrats to lead committees and to set the agenda. If Democrats had a veto proof majority, then they could be held responsible. Without it, they are incapable of changing established policy because it would be vetoed by the POTUS and his veto would be upheld.

While driving today I passed a business with a sign in the window that read, PSYCHIC READER CLARA.

I was so tempted to stop, walk in and say, "Hi, you're Clara. What's my name?"

ngs.woc.noaa.gov

it says we can drill 50 miles off the coasts but the state has to approve EVEN THOUGH THEY WILL GET NO ROYALTIES

Why should the states get any royalties? The OCS belongs to the federal gov't and therefore, the royalties belong to all Americans; not just those that reside in coastal states. In fact, Congress should withdraw the royalties being paid to coastal Gulf states and distribute them to all states in proportion to their population. And, if the current drilling in Alaska is on federal land, royalty payments to Alaska should be withdrawn and those royalties redistributed to all states!

but the state has to approve EVEN THOUGH THEY WILL GET NO ROYALTIES

dems sabotoged it before it even gets to the white house

Funny, that was a demand placed there by Republican governors.

Sigh, Reality and the Right, never the twain shall meet.

Even dead cats bounce. McCain's bump was due to Palin. As people bite beyond the sugar coating on her bio cookie they aren't being left with a good taste in their mouths.

If this election turns out to be about issues Obama will win. McCain's campaign manager, Rick Davis, implies he's doing everything he can to make it about personalities.

This election I hope the American public is smarter than to fall for all the double talk coming from the McCain camp. Worse than flip-flops, the double talk is obvious to Joe Sixpack. Palin will cooperate in July. She's turning out to be Dick Cheney in a skirt between fighting subpoenas and hunting, and McCain's even contradicting himself in the same day - as he did over 'fundamentals of the economy strong', and 'economy in crisis'.

If this election turns out to be about issues Obama will win. McCain's campaign manager, Rick Davis, implies he's doing everything he can to make it about personalities.

Go back to huffington posts. His manager said it is not about the issues as much as it is about what people take away from these candidates. Which is exactly correct. Obama has been in the Senate about 150 days and you think he can point to anything he has done about the so called issues? Maybe if the issue was about containing rogue nuclear material. Other than that life changing legislation, what have you got? The Iraq De-Escalation Act?

She's turning out to be Dick Cheney in a skirt between fighting subpoenas and hunting...

As opposed to the fresh face of thirty years in Biden? You know his change Washington mantra. Change by nominating someone who is partly to blame for America's ills? Stand up Chuck. Get up Chuck. What are you handicapped?

CRISPEE

I'm not getting into that conversation with you.

More saliently, just imagine what happens as the media focuses on McCain's record for sponsoring and/or advocating over decades deregulation of the banking industry, against the G.I. Bill of Rights, against hte minimum wage, and on and on and on and on

He's no friend of the average American and the world is about to find that out.

AU,
You don't think McCain will ask about his advisors connections to fannie and freddie? Or the amount of money Obama has received from the Industry? Point out the Senators of his own party and their complicity?

Don't forget a small amount of bad records beats no record any day.

CRISPEE

The amount of money paid out the last two weeks from we taxpayers is currently $314,000,000,000 (billion) - all thanks to deregulation advocated by John McCain and his chief economic adviser, Phil Gramm

That doesn't include IndyMac or any of the commercial banks that have failed. Only investment banks, Fannie and Freddie, who all got into risky investments never allowed before this deregulation took hold starting in 1999 in a GOP controlled Congress.

This has to be the funny story of the day. Any chance rcade can give a thread to the funniest news stories of the day? Like the Nooner?

L.A. Times employees sue parent firm Tribune, Zell
A group of current and former workers accuses the CEO and his predecessor of devising a plan to take the company private to enrich themselves to the detriment of employees.
By Jerry Hirsch, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
September 17, 2008
Several former and current Los Angeles Times employees filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the newspaper's corporate parent, Tribune Co., and its chief executive, Sam Zell, contending that reckless management is destroying the value of the company.

The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, alleges that Zell and former Tribune CEO Dennis J. FitzSimons devised a plan to take the company private to enrich themselves to the detriment of employees.

The lawsuit seeks class-action status on behalf of employees of The Times and Tribune., which owns a variety of newspapers, television stations and other assets including the Chicago Tribune, KTLA-TV Channel 5 and the Chicago Cubs baseball team.

Tribune's roughly 18,000 employees became owners of the company when it was taken private in a transaction that saddled the business with $12.5-billion in debt and also created an employee stock ownership plan late last year. As part of deal, FitzSimons received nearly $21 million in bonuses, severance and other payouts, according to the lawsuit.

This week alone, investors have been frightened by Standard & Poors cutting of the banks debt rating to junk."

So what is going to happen to WaMu next Unity?

Best case scenario for shareholders: Fire Sale

IndyMac deja vu if account holders get nervous

This news just hit the wires tonight

After a two hour bus ride from Houma to Fourchon through the debris of Gustav and a 6 hour boat ride through very choppy seas to the rig last Monday, we found it in a big mess. Forward satellite antennae -- gone with its 17' radome. Aft antennae -- fucked. We didn't get comms back until late today.

One anchor winch cab literally exploded when a wave came through the trap door on the bottom and built up so much pressure it blew the windows out from the inside. The chair, previously bolted to the deck went through a flourescent light fixture and in into the roof.

Six of the eight 3 3/4" anchor wire snapped like kite string. The rig had turned in a couple of circles entwining the remaining two.

Lots of deck plates and handrails are missing. Others very loose.

Gantry crane cab and controllers: drenched. Cameras gone everywhere..

Lots of other damage. We will begin a tow to the Pascagoula shipyards on Friday. We'll probably be there 5 or 6 months.

Does that mean you get 6 months off with pay for days you would have worked?

If so, you lucky dog !

I still come to the rig two weeks on and get two weeks off -- just the same as offshore.

We did the same thing in 2005 after Rita tore up the rig. But then we were in Brownsville. I would rather be there than Mississippi

But what is there for you to do you do on the rig every two weeks if it's undergoing repairs?
Do you still have to stay aboard the rig when it's being repaired or just show up for two weeks?

Wow. You had some rough seas.

Repair! *grin*

Flippancy aside: A lot of electronics got wet and ruined. Gotta fix and/or replace it.

Can you at least leave the rig during your 12 hours off every day or are you
stuck on the rig 24/7 the same as when you're in the middle of the GoM?

hmmm, my fresh coffee just finished perking! later.

It seems to me that in trying to solve this crisis, they are sowing the seeds of future crises. Think about this, you have financial institutions selling themselves and merging and the like so what is going to happen a few years down the road? What will happen is that those institutions will be "too big to fail" just like they are saying AIG is. These institutions are too big to fail, yet they are allowed to form in the first place.

The Russian stockmarket is closed again today.

Seems like the whole world is in economic meltdown.

Russian stockmarket still closed

For some reason when I read your rig had gone adrift and broke loose from its moorings I just sort of pictured it in my mind as floating merrily adrift in the GoM. I didn't realize how much the waves has tossed and damaged the rig. I wonder how high Ike's waves got out there in the GoM. It must have taken a lot of force to rip your rig off its moorings.

Sorry about my "duh" moment.
I knew you handled all the radio and communication equipment and took care of minor technical communication problems but I didn't know you were able to do extensive major repairs to the electrical equipment too.

Guess you're even much smarter than I thought. lol

ps Goat

In case my last post came across sounding a touch sarcastic it wasn't meant to be at all.
I am impressed you know how to do all those electrical and communication repairs.
Your Navy training/schooling in that field certainly paid off.

Glad to see you made it through Hurricane Ike you crazy Texan!
