The U.S. can reduce its dependence on foreign oil and greenhouse-gas emissions by making cars and buildings much more energy efficient, according to a study released Tuesday by a large national association of physicists. "The opportunities are huge and the costs are small," the report said.

Physicists!

What do THEY know about science?

Conservation is the coward's way out!

If they were REAL men they'd be advising us all to buy more Hummers and build 10,000-square-foot McMansions with adjustable-rate mortgages!

FACTORAMA LAMA DAMA DING DONG!

If we drilled offshore, one well for each home, we wouldn't have an energy problem now would we???

"I addressed this issue previously with my Comprehensive Mandatory Tire Air Pressure Act, which I attached my name to, after some one else wrote it, of course."

"Comprehensive Mandatory Tire Air Pressure Act..."

Which the Republicans filibustered, trying to substitute the "Let's Just Remain Stupid Act".

"Let's Just Remain Stupid and do nothing but talk Act".

barrack obama

Hopefully Al Gore and other loudmouthed fake environmentalists will lead by example.

Yeah, conservation is for pussies, right, Cookfish?

Grow some balls and waste more, right? To hell with the environment. To hell with oil dependency. Lowering thermostats is SO-O-O-O-O Jimmy Carter.

We've got a God-given right to go down the freaking tubes with our heads held high, eh?

OR the "forget about energy, let's just try and sleep with some young boys Act of 1994-2006 ACT"

GOP congress...

We should join Sarah in the Prayer Cave to end this blessed country's dependence on foreign oil.

Hey Joe, I just insulated my whole house and I'm saving a bunch of money. I know that sounds very un-Repub of me....

Neither party ha done shit. Just talk, no action.

Why is the GOP so hell bent on Drilling and so against conserving. They can't walk and chew gum....

We could jon obama in snorting some cocaine and forgetting the whole mess.

Fake environmentalists? Whatever. If Gore and the others are fake, fuck 'em. But the fact is, we've got to cut back on energy consumption.

At least Gore raised the issues of global warming and conservation while most of the right had its collective head in the sand.

If W left any on the mirrow of his Daddy's house...

jon = join

This sounds like a good approach, but I really prefer the Obama plan of creating millions of green jobs out of thin air and powering our vehicles with hope and unity.

" and do nothing but talk"

Hey, Einstein, which will help more: sucking every single drop out of the ground America possibly can, or running automobiles at maximum efficiency?

Hint: one offers several times the potential versus another.

But the Let's Remain Stupid, And Pretend Drilling is the Answer act is a Republican construct.

I will no doubt be keeping my eye on that.

Anything to keep from the beating I receive at the pump.

My Hyundai ain't too bad though!

When I was a POW we didn't have any new fangled tire pressure gauges or air conditioned houses, because POWs like I was don't get the things non-POWs like Obama get. Somedays as a POWit felt as hot as I made the deck of the Forrestal, before I was a POW and just a hero.

So when I made enough confession tapes (between inventing the blackberry and the Savings and Loan) I got to be a former POW and when I dumped my sick wife and family for my richbitch, I decided I'd never conserve energy in any of my numerous houses, which I diddn't have when I was a POW or with my wife's personal jet. The oil company lobbyist who tells me what to say tells me to say the hell with conservation, and Sarah, who wasn't a POW but was held by the KGB while guarding the Aleutians from Putin, approves me saying this.
Remember, saving energy hurts the oil companies and the saudi arabians, so good Republicans will, like Obama said when he ran the Black Panthers, burn baby burn.

I'm always in the throttle on the Buell and it still averages around 65 MPG. :)

2slow4A5thGrader. Imagine how cheap all your favorite products would be if Gas was half the price... It's not about being green, it's about saving money... My fUCKing money...

My Hyundai ain't too bad though!

I take the ole train because I live by the "el" tracks (3 blocks in a suburb of Chicago). But I dislike care because they are a pain in the ass. But if I have to get one I could do a Hyundai...

Higher efficiency will come about naturally from the commercial sector due to consumers not wanting to pay higher energy costs. That's why sales for Priuses are way up and sales for big SUVs are in the tank. I would expect people building new houses to demand more insulation, high efficiency windows, etc.

The problem is this process takes a long time. Not everyone can go out and buy a couple new cars and a new house tomorrow. People will get more efficient cars as their current ones wear out and will invest in higher efficiency appliances and so forth when the can afford it.

In the meantime we need to continue to research other energy sources. More drilling won't fix our current problem, but it will buy us more time to come up with a solution.

Not that the oil companies didn't already have plenty of places to drill but now they will have more, without additional refinery capacity what are they going to do with additional oil. Oh yeah, send it to China.

"More drilling won't fix our current problem, but it will buy us more time to come up with a solution."

Yeah, about 10 minutes more time. It was a political stunt not a real solution to energy problems. Remember pre-2006??? Where was the call for more drilling??? Republican Congress and President but no new drilling??? McCain was way behind in the polls, needed a gimmick that he could easily sell to unsuspecting Americans....drilling...yeah..
..drilling for more oil.
Watch as these new fields go unexplored, undrilled.
This "drilling" has aleady yielded its pay off, higher poll numbers for McOil.

"The report's authors noted that both Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama have called for improvements in energy efficiency and reduced oil imports and emissions."

Does that mean that by both of them they mean both of them?

This sounds like an issue that has broad bipartisan support.

Why isn't the congress doing something about it right now?

Imagine how cheap my favorite products would be if I didn't have to support your GED carrying wishing he could own a hyundai, minimum wage earning ass?

Danni, you commenting on refining capacity and the problems associated with O&G SCM is like listening to Barry tell us about his family (He doesn't know anything about them either except what he reads in the globe.)

This is all fine and dandy, unless its a prelude to increasing the population. Then nothing has been accomplishitfucked.

Corporations and Government always want to grow. More congestion, more pollution, higher costs for everything, and of course lower wages. That is the Oligarchies master plan. The politicians job is to distract everyone from these unpleasant realities.

What our government should really do is commit to increasing the quality of our lives, by lowering costs, pollution and congestion while increasing wages and free time. That would be Government of, by and for the people.

"I'm always in the throttle on the Buell and it still averages around 65 MPG. :)"

Which would be about 8 years before Mcsame's drill my wife please plan produced its first drop of oil.

Funny how McDrill can't be bothered telling anyone that. I guess Republican POWs aren't required to tell the truth.

Neither is their running mates, apparently. But Saint Sarah went to kindergarten with somebody who drove past a gas station, so they've got the Energy Secretary position covered.

YEAH!

Except you said you were always in the throttle-- which to people familiar with the terminology equates to Spirited Driving-- ---- something not usual associated with highway-- driving (i.e. steady throttle hence the increase efficiency due to the fact you dont have to always in the throttle-- as in bringing the weight up to speed)!

So its confirmed what I asserted earlier --- That You are just a Liar making some noise for your own entertainment.

CHILL - maybe you could have your powerful employer take me out? thought not, you're not even a good bluffer. Guess you thought telling me that your employer is very powerful would scare me. Go check on the fries before you get fired PR boy.

REDNECK - Not sure if I'm familiar with the term spirited driving but I'm pretty sure that if the chicken strips on the daiblo were any thinner my rims would be scratched. you got me though, I couldn't possilby haul ass in the twisties on a buell moron.

I'd love to know how much this study cost, and who are the fucking morons that paid for it.

If I can get free stuff, why should I work? That is where we are going.

So not sending money to terrorist supporting countries like saudistan is bad? Running up trade deficits is a good thing? Can't wait till you decide we need to buy Iranian and russian oil too.

Fuck Sniper, please cut and paste the email that told you that.

And Sniper-do you pay for the air you breathe?

I'm thinking, if you are, you're really not buying enough.

Gotta go - all this talk about motorcycles, fuel, and power couldn't have happened at a better moment, the sky just opened up and it's a beautiful day to go riding to the range.

CHILL - I'm still here so your guy/gal must not be that powerful; you keep sucking up though and maybe you can be like Jamie Gorelick.

"Other stabs at humor are less likely to go viral. Particle-physics jokes can be rather opaque. A classic example: "A neutron walks into a bar and asks how much the drinks cost. The bartender replies, 'For you, no charge.' "

And consider the following one-liner, delivered in the CERN cafeteria by Mr. Goldfarb: "Two protons walk into a black hole." That's the joke."

CERN's in-house science writer has already made a rap video about the LHC and posted it on YouTube.

Are you enjoying that Kool-Aid, fella? Current retail price projection for the Volt is $48,000 - over twice the price of a Prius for a car with a forty-mile range on electric, built by a company that can no longer seem to make reliable cars using technologies more than a century old.

Since many commutes are more than 20 miles, tell me - how are people going to get back and forth to work with Volts? Using its gasoline-engine capability, that's how. While you could charge up during your workday, try asking your boss for lots of free electricity every Monday through Friday and tell me how far you get. That means much of the vaunted gasoline savings of the Volt are illusory. My prediction is that for drivers in major metro areas with long commutes, the Volt will do no better than the Prius overall.

These physicists have it right - while new technologies will probably help in the future, we need to use less right this minute, with smaller houses and cars. That's cheap, proven tech that nobody has to pay a fortune for, and it means the future, for once, is already here.

Nice to see all the conservatives here bash conservation. Hilarious.

Don't tell me about what a great conservationist you are by recycling unless you live like Tarzan and F'ing Jane. Quit eating the veggies bitches they're making your brains small! LOL

Great post.

When efficient cars and houses are reasonable affordable, then I will gladly take part.

"When efficient cars and houses are reasonable affordable, then I will gladly take part."

Last I looked, Monster, small cars with small engines cost less than big cars with big engines. Same with houses - you can get 1700 square feet for way less money than you'll spend for 4000 square feet.

In both instances, you'll pay less for energy to run 'em, because it takes less energy to run something small than it does something large.

Math make your neck bolts hurt?

price per sq ft. typically goes down as the size of the house increases. I would also say that on average a more expensive house (at least where I live) is much more efficient than your cheap houses)

Ferrari with 302 cid v12 costs much more than a 505 cid v10 viper
buell with 1203 cc v-twin is comparable to a 600 cc cbrr.

see a pattern?, this bucket ain't holding much water. Larger homes are usually 'zoned' and insulated much better (not even getting into the quality of materials for larger homes); moreover, a home of today that is twice the size of mine is cheaper to heat/cool by more than half. Yes, there are instances where your smaller is better/cheaper theory works - of course when you pay for less, you get less and the old addage of you get what you pay for still applies. Do play again.

" Do play again."

Thanks, I will.

Are you seriously trying to tell me that a Ford Focus has the same fuel cost as a Lincoln Town Car? Or that a little house with good insulation and windows costs the same to heat as a big one built to the same standard?

You can play all the games you want, but the laws of physics are what rule here: to use less energy, your best bet is to cut the physical size of whatever's using it. Your "you get what you pay for" stuff doesn't hold water in this discussion, which is about the best and cheapest way to save energy given the current state of technology. While we're a long way from it, the day is coming when you'll be good and goddamn glad to drive a Honda Civic, because larger vehicles will become completely unaffordable to operate, except possibly for the very wealthy.

Wake up and smell the coffee. While there still is some coffee.

So an infinitely large house requires zero energy.

check

Annual Fuel Costs of 2008 Lincoln continental Signature limited $2,856 - 2008 Ford Focus ~$2,100

Enjoy your focus cap'n. I'll take the limited - and yes, I know this is based on older gas prices but they both use the same grade of fuel.

nobody said infinitely Zat - bus stations are cold too.

We can, and should, find other means of alternative energy but we will always need oil. FACT.

we will always need oil.

True, but it might be nice to leave a little around unburned so our children's grandchildren could have plastic.

Marty,

You're assuming that I have an SUV and a 4000sqft house. Mistake on your part. I have neither, so your condescending attitude is lost here. I think you're one of many here who are really on this site to try and be a wise guy without really adding anything to the conversation. I wasn't talking about a Hyundai and a smaller house...I was already aware of those ideas. I was talking about renewable energy and emerging technologies. Science make your pea breain hurt?

Who kill the electric car?

#59 | Posted by donnerboy

I think it was the tangle of extension cords that killed it.

New Guy here... The only problem I've found with conservation is the following.

Here in North Carolina we are having a problem with water shortages over the state. We have been conserving water and what happens? The loss in revenue due to conservation made the water rates go up. Duke Energy asks for conservation then carps about people cutting back on electricity so they have raised rates to make up the shortfall with the blessings of the N.C. government. Piedmont Natural Gas will do the same. The bottom line here is conserve and pay more cause everyone needs to make a profit, or so they say. I'm seeing a pattern here...

I've been watching this site for some time now and have enjoyed the back and forth. I have hopes of making intelligent or at least semi-intelligent comments cause you folks can be viscious...

IMHO -- Uncle Sam and local governemnts speak with two sides of their mouths -- The Federal Highway Administration opposes this because more efficient cars means less $ for highways and for the highway bureaucracy. Local governments will get less sales tax revenue for pet projects and local roads. So why do they want to cut their income? And what will make up for the lost revenues?

FunHouse,
How does Duke Energy make your electricity? My local company uses natural gas driven generators. They've had to raise prices not because of conservation but because the price of natural gas has gone up.

Welcome aboard. And, yes, you do need a thick skin here.

Why doesn't U.S. energy futures trade on regulated exchange????

Seems there is something to hide here.

Can we get more nuclear power like the Iranians?
