The Chinese were amde to wear pigtails to accommodate their occupiers and make it easier to physically control them. The response should be forcing the Iraqi women to abandon burkhas and other such garments and wear flimsy clothing that will more readily disclose attempts to secrete explosives or weapons on their bodies.

But the U.S. has shown self-destructive restraint in dealing with people accustomed to a heavy hand. They chafed, but never openly protested, the activities of Hussein, and the excesses of his sons.

We need to learn for next time. And we should not be averse to being informed by our enemies.

Whatever happened to eclecticism. It was good enough for Saddam, so it should be good enough for us. Learn from others. Deference and respect don't seem to work in that area of the world. When in Rome ... . and when in The Middle East ... .

#1 We are supposed to be keeping the peace in Iraq to make sure its transition into a Democracy is at least slightly smooth. Why would we not allow their population to be able to practice their religion (however fucked up it is)? Would you try to start a civil war in the country, or would it be an "accident"?
