The pastor whose prayer Sarah Palin says helped her to become governor of Alaska founded his ministry with a witchhunt against a Kenyan woman who he accused of causing car accidents through demonic spells.

At a speech at the Wasilla Assembly of God on June 8 this year, Mrs Palin described how Thomas Muthee had laid his hands on her when he visited the church as a guest preacher in late 2005, prior to her successful gubernatorial bid.

In video footage of the speech, she is seen saying: As I was mayor and Pastor Muthee was here and he was praying over me, and you know how he speaks and hes so bold. And he was praying Lord make a way, Lord make a way.--

Obama has described Wright as his sounding board-- during the two decades he has known him. Obama has said he found religion through Wright in the 1980s and consulted him before deciding to run for president. He prayed privately with Wright before announcing his candidacy last year.

"And Im thinking, this guys really bold, he doesnt even know what Im going to do, he doesnt know what my plans are. And hes praying not oh Lord if it be your will may she become governor,-- no, he just prayed for it. He said Lord make a way and let her do this next step. And thats exactly what happened.--

She then adds: So, again, very very powerful, coming from this church,-- before the presiding pastor comments on the prophetic power-- of the event."

Speaking of Rev. Wright, it seems the Palin campaign was trying to avoid its own Pastor Muthee moment:

Pastor Muthee has frequently referred to this witchhunt in his sermons as an example of the power of spiritual warfare--. In October 2005, he delivered ten sermons at the Wasilla Assembly of God, the audio of which was available on the churchs website until it was removed around the time Mrs Palins candidacy was announced.

I think these videos need to be played on tv because Palin herself credits him for praying her in being elected governor. Palin is definitely worse than W. At least he took counsel from Billy Graham, not some Christian witch hunter from Kenya. Unbelievable.

Yep, McCain was definitely afraid of this guy, and rightly so:

The full Transformations video featuring Pastor Muthees story has recently been removed from YouTube but the rest of the story is detailed in a 1999 article in the Christian Science Monitor, as well as on numerous evangelical websites.

Wright went on: We started the AIDS virus..."

Obama has described Wright as his sounding board-- during the two decades he has known him. Obama has said he found religion through Wright in the 1980s and consulted him before deciding to run for president. He prayed privately with Wright before announcing his candidacy last year.

Aside from showing poor judgment, its difficult to imagine that Obama could be so close to Wright without agreeing with at least some of his views.

"Palin is definitely worse than W."

before his decision to run for pres Obama prayed with and found religion through the man that said:

That African-Americans should not say "God Bless America," but rather "God damn America" for "killing innocent people"?

That 9/11 was a case of "America's chickens coming home to roost"?

That Zionism has an element of "white racism"?

The one implied by his decision to make a pilgrimage to Libyan dictator Moammar Khadafy with Louis Farrakhan - a man Wright's church has hailed for having "truly epitomized greatness"?

"The central difficulty lies in the fact that all of the sciences have made such great progress during the last century that they have got quite beyond the reach of man. "
-H. L. Mencken, 1880 1956

Mencken died too early.

It was during that these sermons that Mrs Palin, who was then preparing for her gubernatorial run, was anointed by Pastor Muthee. His intercession, she says, was awesome--.

I am not one who believes there is no such thing as a faith healer. I do think, however, that the genuine ones are very few and far between and not limited to the Christian faith. It is very easy to get caught up in the emotion of one of these revivals and imagine all sorts of spiritual things have happened.

Here it is.

www.nytimes.com

It was a 1988 sermon called The Audacity to Hope-- that turned Mr. Obama, in his late 20s, from spiritual outsider to enthusiastic churchgoer. Mr. Wright in the sermon jumped from 19th-century art to his own youthful brushes with crime and Islam to illustrate faiths power to inspire underdogs. Mr. Obama was seeing the same thing in public housing projects where poor residents sustained themselves through sheer belief.

In Dreams From My Father,-- Mr. Obama described his teary-eyed reaction to the ministers words. Inside the thousands of churches across the city, I imagined the stories of ordinary black people merging with the stories of David and Goliath, Moses and Pharaoh, the Christians in the lions den, Ezekiels field of dry bones,-- Mr. Obama wrote. Those stories of survival, and freedom, and hope became our story, my story.--

Yeah, so it never happened? Same situation with Palin yet you rip her for it. Sounds like your confused and need new talking points.

"It is common to assume that human progress affects everyone - that even the dullest man, in these bright days, knows more than any man of, say, the Eighteenth Century, and is far more civilized. This assumption is quite erroneous. The men of the educated minority, no doubt, know more than their predecessors, and of some of them, perhaps, it may be said that they are more civilized - though I should not like to be put to giving names - but the great masses of men, even in this inspired republic, are precisely where the mob was at the dawn of history. They are ignorant, they are dishonest, they are cowardly, they are ignoble. They know little if anything that is worth knowing, and there is not the slightest sign of a natural desire among them to increase their knowledge.

Such immortal vermin, true enough, get their share of the fruits of human progress, and so they may be said, in a way to have their part in it. .... He has at hand a thousand devices for making life less wearisome and more tolerable: the telephone, railroads, bichloride tablets, newspapers, sewers, correspondence schools, delicatessen. But he had no more to do with bringing these things into the world than the horned cattle in the fields, and he does no more to increase them today than the birds of the air.

On the contrary, he is generally against them, and sometimes with immense violence. Every step in human progress, from the first feeble stirrings in the abyss of time, has been opposed by the great majority of men."

Before you were born the diving was mediocre at best.

I went to Salem, MA last summer on vacation. One of the touristy things we did was go to the witch museum. The description of the witchhunt here reminds me of the stories I heard that day, with the exception that the Kenyan "witch" wasn't stoned to death as the villagers wanted but merely frightened half to death and driven from her home.

Hi Gal!

I studied the Salem Witch Trials (among other interesting cases) in a legal history class for my BA in Physics. I still have a copy of the original trial transcripts.

Those idiots were smarter than this pack of clowns; Far less dangerous, too.

The fact that Caribou Barbie said her election as governor was as the result of the prayers of a fucking Witch hunter IS NEWS! GEDDIT!

Why is it news if Obama meeting to pray with Wright before announcing his candidacy is not? What was he praying about? Most likely guidance, wisdom....like Palin.

BTW, any Christian minister would be considered a "witch hunter". Because according to scripture when someone becomes a Christian, they are filled with the 'holy spirit'. Since evangelical ministers are tasked with reaching those they consider "lost", anyone claiming to be a witch cannot be considered a Christian, so they would be the targets of the minister.

www.nytimes.com

The Times reporter calmly passed along that Wright was taking instructions from Jesus himself:

At a sermon earlier on Sunday at Elmwoods main branch in East Orange, N.J., Mr. Wright referred to the controversy that had swirled around him, emphasizing the importance of listening to Jesuss instructions.

"He told me, You dont have to give up your Africanity for your Christianity; preach the truth and let the chips fall where they may, " Mr. Wright said. "I aint preaching for no journalists; Im preaching for Jesus. I aint preaching for no president; Im preaching for the prince of peace."

Times columnists (think Frank Rich) fulminate against religious-right figures who are seemingly on a phone line with the Almighty. But Rev. Wright is apparently a different story entirely. His phone line to Heaven is apparently not worth questioning.

Gal - women with "the gift" have been soundly vilified through history when the reality is in many small villages and towns they were the only source of medicine and healing to the poor who could not afford to go to physicians (if they were even available outside the big cities). Many times the "witch" label was placed upon them by those very physicians who saw their money going elsewhere, it was then expanded by the "mob" mentality (which is shown very well by a scene in a Monty Python movie of all things).

Since evangelical ministers are tasked with reaching those they consider "lost", anyone claiming to be a witch cannot be considered a Christian, so they would be the targets of the minister.

Please show me where in the Bible Jesus said to go out and "target" witches or any other nonbeliever. Targets is a good word though for the kind of activity this Kenyan minister practiced. Thanks for using it.

MID - okay I will try to type very slowly so you can understand. R E V E R E N D W R I G H T W A S S I X M O N T H S A G O T H E D R U D G E R E T O R T I S A P L A C E T O D I S C U S S C U R R E N T N E W S E V E N T S.
Ergo Reverend Wright is not a current news event and is therefore not worthy of discussion. Sorry you were not here six months ago when it was. Your loss.

David and Goliath..... From a shepherd to a King.....

When this teen expressed faith in God and shared his willingness to take on Goliath, everyone including his older brothers considered him a hothead and rebuked him for the audacity.

If Sarah acknowledged her success to the blessing of Almighty God, I say, spot on.

My advice to Sarah: never be ashamed of your faith (after all America is a land blessed by God), but in political arena, use coded language when necessary.

Oh about the witch hunt (not physical persecution), I wish I was with your pastor --- I understand spiritual battles and I've experienced it first hand. People who are not born again, and sadly even some believers with rigid views, will not understand SPIRITUAL BATTLES! (1 Cor. 2:14).

Well said Eddie. This is an article from a tabloid newspaper in London, England. How deep are you going to dig before you realize that you have swift-boated yourselves this election cycle.

Idiots!

Witch burning was very popular for 400 years. In general, Lawyers, Judges with supporting staff, targeted rich widows and after convicting their targets confiscated their wealth (allegedly to cover Court costs). But anyone could be trapped in their grip, with just a whisper from an unfriendly neighbor.

Yesterday witches, today its day care givers and/or terrorists. There's big money in this bullshit.

She was also waiting to find out if she dies in office whether she can have the Alaskan Independence Flag covering her coffin rather than allowing that starry-striped rag of the Zionest Bankers to be draped over her holy privileaged body.

I worry that, especially as the Millennium edges nearer, pseudoscience and superstition will seem year by year more tempting, the siren song of unreason more sonorous and attractive. Where have we heard it before? Whenever our ethnic or national prejudices are aroused, in times of scarcity, during challenges to national self-esteem or nerve, when we agonize about our diminished cosmic place and purpose, or when fanaticism is bubbling up around us-then, habits of thought familiar from ages past reach for the controls.

The candle flame gutters. Its little pool of light trembles. Darkness gathers. The demons begin to stir. [Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World: Science As a Candle in the Dark]

Kirk?

Gosh, Palin should have an invisible shield from criticism on this matter since the Cotton Mather en.wikipedia.org of Africa is after all a black man, and thus exempt from criticism. Kenya is also the country of Obama's father, and therefore its practices are exempt from crticism. You people are criticizing Ms Palin because she shares beliefs of a black man. Prejudiced against blacks, aren't you, and charging them with primitive beliefs.

Remember that Cotton Mather was a brilliant man, who was graduated from college at age 16. If exorcising witches was good enough for Cotton Mather, an early American, surely its also good enough for the black African preacher, who laid his hands on and blessed Candidate Palin.

And since you folks don't share a religious world view, it again illustrates your arrogance and elitist position as you arbitrarily place your ideas of how the world works as more realistic and having greater validity than those of religious believers, and of believers in witchcraft such as the brilliant Cotton Mather. You'll never know how much evil was averted by the preemptive dispatch of witches before they could work their spells.

Give me that "Old Time Religion," it's good enough for me.

Of ye of little faith ...

Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for.-- Hebrews 11:1-2

You seclarists have your own fables, your own creationist myths such as the "Big Bang." You have your own icience fiction such as multiple universes, multiple dimensions, and other speculative unproven ideas. So, give it a break. Gosh. Maybe you'll find a Higgs boson. One more step.

For a long time, the brainy secularists ridiculed the idea of divine intervention, and God keeping tabs on the works of every human being. Yet now computers and googling demonstrate that such "bookkeeping" could be a reality insofar as the technical aspects of "what is," are "found" by us, or as some would say, "revealed to us."

Somehow these people you assail as "clueless religionists" are sufficiently in touch with the realities of the world, that they can function and prosper in it.

"myths such as the "Big Bang." "

Uh, dumbass, you can see it.

Penzias & Wilson would like a word with you.

Murray Hill, N.J. -- When the intellectual history of the 20th century is written, a few achievements will tower over all. Einstein's theory of general relativity will be one; the laws of quantum mechanics will be another. The so-called Big Bang Theory of the origin of the universe will be a third.

The discovery in 1963 by Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson of the cosmic microwave background of the Big Bang set the seal of approval on the theory, and brought cosmology to the forefront as a scientific discipline. It was proof that the universe was born at a definite moment, some 15 billion years ago.

Make that ignorant lying dumbass.

Johnson,

The difference is science beliefs has substantial physical proofs based on fact and reality. The reality is, there is zero proof of a god. None, if there was you religous freaks would flaunt it. Instead all you have are some crusty cheeto's that look like a mans face, some re-written books that are hysterical funny, and grotesquely innaccurate(Noah's ark, world flooding, flat earth, earth is center of universe, no gravity and the list goes on, and on and on). When are you religous peeps gonna realize that you are clinging to the support network for 6,000-7,000 year old people who knew little if anything of how the world operated. They took stories from the various "religions and beliefs" of there time and crafted a new one, polytheism to monotheism. Descriptions of fire raining down from the sky are easily explained today through observable(scientific) meteor showers. Religion from it's begining was an attempt to explain why are we here, to comfort against what was not understood at the times(fires, tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, landslides.....) and to give man a purpose so we all didn't just lie around and screw..........unfortunatley it became engrosed in ones life so much that it took over all aspects of those who turned to it, including their logic. So now in spite of the mounting evidence against it, it remains.....

Zatiochi, in addition to name-calling, actually posts SOMETHING of substance!

But still ran away from my answering my queries.

Betelgeuse,
Sorry for not answering earlier.
What would I do with a witch?

Depends on the circumstance.

Acts 16:16-18 is one possibility.

The other is simply ignoring the witch in question, with or without praying against the ruling spirit behind said witch.
Another is engaging the witch in conversation and using the free exchange of ideas to try and persuade said witch.

And a final one is assembling a prayer team to bring down any demonic strongholds in the location in question, like Pastor Muthee did quite effectively.

I wouldn't likely ever involve civil authorities. That would mean no witch burnings.

That's all ya get BetelG

There are plenty of witches, and they'll often be happy to admit it.

There are witches, and then there are witches. Most people who call themselves witches these days practice a form of Wicca or the ancient religion of paganism. They do not claim to be possessed of demonic spirits, as was thought to be the case of the woman in Acts 16. What demonic spirit was the slave girl in Acts tormented by? "The spirit of divination." IOW, she claimed to have the gift of prophecy. If she had the benefit of astrolgy, she might have set up shop as an astrologer. You know, the kind of person Nancy Reagan consulted.

Consistent with the chapter in Acts Kirk cited, I just learned from Keith Olbermann that the "witch" in Kenyan Palin's pastor hunted down was deemed to be a witch because she practiced fortune-telling.

From Olbermann's show I also realized that Pastor Muthee, according to Palin's own testimony, did not pray that if it be God's will, Palin would become governor. He prayed that a way would be made for that to happen. IOW, he did not pray that she would be on God's side but that God would be on hers. He did not pray to know God's will but asked God to grant his, and Palin was thrilled by this and called him bold:

As I was mayor and Pastor Muthee was here and he was praying over me, and you know how he speaks and he's so bold. And he was praying "Lord make a way, Lord make a way."

"And I'm thinking, this guy's really bold, he doesn't even know what I'm going to do, he doesn't know what my plans are. And he's praying not "oh Lord if it be your will may she become governor," no, he just prayed for it. He said "Lord make a way and let her do this next step. And that's exactly what happened."

She then adds: "So, again, very very powerful, coming from this church," before the presiding pastor comments on the "prophetic power" of the event.
