Obama needs an issue that illustrates the lameness of McCain-Palin's claim to "Change," but at the same time demonstrates how his administration would serve the people who are hurting (most of us are at least worried, given the economy).

Obama has already outlined some possibilities: two of them ought to be combined:

I'm normally not in favor of keynesian economics but, in this case, it is called for.

Our infrastructure is crumbling and we are pumping money into iraqi oil fields and haliburton while our debt skyrockets.

That money could be spent to encourage oil alternatives and infrastructure to go with it.

And to rebuild some of our manufacturing base.

In other words Obama should tell many of his political advisors to take a hike and do what is best for the country. This really is a no-brainer.

Obama should remind America about the "War on Terror" and the importance of getting off ME oil. On that basis he should start a huge program of rebuilding our energy production system throughout the entire country. The cost would be an investment and the infusion of capital into our system would grow our economy, create jobs, create wealth. It would require though that reliance primarily on oil be seen as our past not as our future. America needs to realize oil people have been delaying this transition for their own benefit. We knew we needed to do it in 1978.

That money could be spent to encourage oil alternatives and infrastructure to go with it.

"The thing is that its not our money in iraq, it's china's. That peace dividend no matter how it would be used, would be no help to our country in the long run.

I'm having a hard time figuring you out lately, danni. *shrugs.

messed up the quotes. Second quote should begin with "in other words....

sorry, danni.

This BECAME McSames platform after obama proposed it first, just like the other issues they stole from obama; sitting down to talk to iran and bringing troops home.

McSame is a shameless bullshit artist and has no capacity for independent thought or policy.

Enact a Windfall Profits Tax to Provide a $1,000 Emergency Energy Rebate to American Families.

Yep, nothing like taxing peoples retirement plans to help the energy situation. Oh, and buying votes with tax money to boot!

And before you retort the statement, do a little research on what govt. pension plans own oil stocks.

McCain's plan is idiotic. Why build nuclear plants when you can get the same energy from wind without the nuclear waste???
Why coal when you can build solar???
Why look to the past as we head to the future??

Fund investment by raising taxes on the rich and at the same time provide tax breaks for investment into clean energy. People will continue to play the stock market as long as their tax burden is less there than in building new energy production facilities.

BTW why were windfall profits taxes a good thing when Sarah Palin got them passed in Alaska but suddenly are a bad thing if Congress does it???

They aren't. When did I say they were?

So, T Boone Pickens is an idiot also?

Why don't you look up a comparison of how much energy comes from a single nuke plant compared to a solar or wind farm danni and get back to me. Hopefully this will prevent stupid comments such as your #9 post.

I am looking a 10 KW windmil. It is 60ft tall and has a set back footprint of 80' x 80'. On average it produces 3-5kw. Retale Cost 60K. It would take 28 years to to pay for with energy savings. Life expectancy is 15 years. Not a good investnment.

the amount of energy is not the only variable that goes into the calculus, cid.

unless you're willing to live next door to it.

This election is about taxes. Either we raise income taxes on the wealthy as we did in WWII and use those higher rates (I'm not suggesting anywhere near that high though) to incentivize investment into alternative energy or we will just continue to decline as a nation. Obama yesterday mentioned that he might not want the Bush tax cuts for the rich to expire as scheduled, to me that was a huge mistake.
He needs to be completely honest with the American people and explain why higher taxes on high income earners can be a win for both average Americans and those very same high wage earners. Their investment, encouraged by the desire to avoid high taxes, will reward them with profits for many years.
The nation will get lower energy costs, less pollutions and freedom from ME and other imported oil. Nothing will happen without incentives being created and without returning capital gains taxes to their previous levels. At the present rate we actually are discouraging investment into new energy infrastructure and steering money into the stock market which isn't creating anything after the initial offerings have been sold. That makes stock investors happy but it doesn't build one windmill or one solar cell.

"Why don't you look up a comparison of how much energy comes from a single nuke plant compared to a solar or wind farm danni and get back to me."

But the amount of nuclear waste created by a windmill is pretty small too wouldn't you say???

If the Romans had build nuclear facilities and stored the waste it would still be radioactive for another 10,000 years.....when you solve that little detail get back to me ok???

unless you're willing to live next door to it.

Tell that to Teddy who does not want a wind farm in his back yard.

I live no more than 20 miles from a nuke plant. No problem with nuke power. Funny how people are so concerned with a nuclear accident but voluntarily smoke. Not saying you do Hag. Just in general. Thank goodness for Hanoi Jane and the China Syndrome.

But the amount of nuclear waste created by a windmill is pretty small too wouldn't you say???

You looked up how much waste is gonna come from all the batteries in the hybrid electric cars? Bet not.

ALL energy solutions must be used to relieve us from ME oil dependancy. When an alternative that is economically/socially viable, we can wean off the fossil fuels. Probably never get rid of them, unless they figure out a way to run an airplane off of something non-carbon based.

This election is about taxes.

DANNI

Yep, and I do not want mine raised. How about slashing the budget instead of re-distributing wealth? Would that work for you DANNI? I mean, if its all about lowering the deficit/debt, couldn't that be accomplished by cutting spending? Bush did a lousy job of it for sure. But I am not voting for bush in this election.

"ALL energy solutions must be used to relieve us from ME oil dependancy."

actually I agree with that, including some nuclear but definitely not primarily nuclear. Unless we figure out a method of treating the waste it will just become too large of a problem, it will be too permanently dangerous.

Has anyone heard what T.Boone says we should do with it?

Unpack his china and call off the moving truck.

"How about slashing the budget instead of re-distributing wealth?"

How would that make someone put their money into an investment that may take years to turn a profit???
Cutting the budget will just create unemployment and eliminate services, won't help the economy at all. That's a talking point for simple minded people. We built our economy because of not in spite of government spending, that is a fact the right hates to acknowledge but it is still the truth. WWII was the biggest economy building event in our history and it was the biggest time of government spending and highest taxes.
Wash that Supply side bull shit out of your minds once and for all, it creates deficits and failed economies. We aren't the first victim of it.

"Has anyone heard what T.Boone says we should do with it?"

I know what Nevadans have said not to do with it.

"Nevadans" .... perhaps not a word???

actually I agree with that, including some nuclear but definitely not primarily nuclear. Unless we figure out a method of treating the waste it will just become too large of a problem, it will be too permanently dangerous.

Actually getting rid of the waste is not as much of a technical problem as a legal problem. The waste can be refined down to a hundredth of the original volume. The problem is the remaining byproduct is weapons grade plutonium. Not supposed to produce that anymore........

We built our economy because of not in spite of government spending.

That's got to be the stupidest thing I've ever herd!

The thing is the thread is about what Obama should do. What I am saying is that he needs to LEAD on energy not attack Sarah Palin. He needs to be honest about the taxation which will be required to do it and how it will encourage investment. The problem is that Republicans will oversimplify his message and pretend it is just raise taxes and won't mention that taxpayers can avoid the taxes by investing in energy infrastructure that gets us off oil.

"That's got to be the stupidest thing I've ever herd!"

Show me where it isn't true. Did we or did we not enter WWII from a depression??
Did we or did we not emerge from WWII richer and more powerful than when we entered it??
When did the decline of the American economy begin??

Government spending, it's like a stimulus package, only we get something in return.

Who is the government DANNI? Where does their money come from?

Government spending, it's like a stimulus package, only we get something in return.

Spoken like a true leach on society.

"So your pro WWII but against WWIII?"

I thought "The War on Terror" was WWIII or a reasonable facimile.

"Spoken like a true leach on society."

WAs Eisenhower a leach on society when he won WWII using rich folks money???
Was Reagan a leach when he outspent and Ruskies and "wonthecoldwar" according to righties??
Is the "War on Terror" real or not???
Is buying oil from the ME helping our enemies or not???
And I don't propose taking anything away from anyone, just inducing them to invest in energy infrastructure....they'll make their money back plus profits.

".... a jobs and infrastructure program, in which a million jobs could be generated to rebuild and improve our ...... blah, blah, blah"

Brilliant strategy! Like "let's promise the 3% of people who work for unions a bigger, fatter paycheck."

Take a clue, dumbass. All the union turds in America (teachers, motor vehicle clerks, etc.) were already in the stadium in Denver.

You have the lard-ass union votes already, dipshit. You think people who actually work will buy this line of bullshit?

WAs Eisenhower a leach ....???
Was Reagan a leach when he .....??

FUNNY how one of the resident Liberal Lunatics suddenly praises both Ike and Reagan -- when it's convenient of course.

Is buying oil from the ME helping our enemies or not???

IS DRILLING FOR domestic oil helping our enemies?

And I don't propose taking anything away from anyone...........

YOU ONLY PROPOSE TAKING AWAY THE CARS people like, the food they want, the schools they send their children to .... blah, blah, blah. Danni will only be happy when she moves to North Korea

just inducing them to invest in energy infrastructure....they'll make their money back plus profits.

BUT ONLY ENERGY BASED ON rotting vegetables and chicken shit. We are not allowed to invest in the energy that works TODAY and that you need TODAY

Try some Red Bull and a Powerbar instead.

"FUNNY how one of the resident Liberal Lunatics suddenly praises both Ike and Reagan -- when it's convenient of course."

I'm not really praising either but just showing that both used government spending to boost the economy. If asked though I would praie Ike but I can't stand even the memory of Reagan.

"YOU ONLY PROPOSE TAKING AWAY THE CARS people like"

You're on drugs.

"IS DRILLING FOR domestic oil helping our enemies?"

No but it isn't a real solution either though I don't object to drilling but I think subsidies and tax breaks should be used to push ahead with alternative energy sources.

"On that basis he should start a huge program of rebuilding our energy production system throughout the entire country. Except McCain and corporate America would decide we do not have enough "qualified candidates" for those jobs and bring in workers on H1B Visas to work for less. We are talking about creating jobs for Americans.

The Democratic plan would not milk the country for future tax dollars while providing the middle class with nothing the same way McBush would. After milking the American system you could always bail out huge investment firms because they made huge errors in judgment and bankrupted their firms...oh wait. When is Lehman going under and when are the tax payers going to bail them out? Can we please pay for their golden parachutes too? After all they earned-- them!

Obama should also add this plank to his platform:

to remove the bowling alley and put in a full court. And then have National Slam Dunk Sundays!
