If you read Michell Obama's thesis at Princeton, it is clear she had issues with how she as a black woman fit into a white environment. In short, not well. She always felt that whenever anyone was interactiung with her, they were looking at her differently because of her race. If you can make it through the paper (it has godawful grammar and syntax) you'll see that Michelle sees herself as a black person first and an American second.

Even if we take into account that it was written when she was 23 yrs old, in more recent times during her initial public statements in the campaign -- prior to her being reined in and muzzled by her husband's campaign like McCain's mother -- I believe showed her true worldview, and one that she has held for her entire adult life.

I honestly think that Barack Obama husband sees himself as American first, and black second. But his wife has a major chip on her shoulder.
