(AP) TORONTO - A chunk of ice shelf as large as Manhattan broke away from Ellesmere Island in Canada's Arctic, a dramatic indication of how warmer temperatures are changing the polar frontier. Derek Mueller, an Arctic ice shelf specialist, said that the 4,500-year-old Markham Ice Shelf separated in early August and the 19-square-mile shelf is now adrift in the Arctic Ocean.

There is only one reasonable response: Give them a huge grant so they can tell us other scary stories in a few years.

And then get another grant.
