Sarah Palin doesn't need to ban books. What Sarah Palin needs to do is read more books. Then she'll learn that George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, John Hancock, and Benjamin Franklin didn't write the "Pledge of Allegiance."

Of course they didn't. Don't be ridiculous. Jesus wrote the Pledge of Allegiance.

-S. Palin

[Former Wasilla mayor John] Stein says that as mayor, Palin continued to inject religious beliefs into her policy at times. "She asked the library how she could go about banning books," he says, because some voters thought they had inappropriate language in them. "The librarian was aghast." That woman, Mary Ellen Baker, couldn't be reached for comment, but news reports from the time show that Palin had threatened to fire Baker for not giving "full support" to the mayor.
www.time.com

Just a guess but was it the Bill of Rights and books on sex ed. she wanted banned?

I think I see now.....Palin is actually Bush in drag!

Sarah Palin = Mike Huckabee in a dress.

I wonder what books she wanted banned.

So even though I'm incredibly sick of hearing about her, I have to wonder....did the McCain camp even try vetting her before naming her as running mate? Because it's just one embarassing story after another after another about this woman.

PERFECT for the GOP.

Why not link to the actual story, instead of alternet's opinion of it?

www.time.com

St. George, however, points out that Palin couldn't have seen everything through an Evangelical lens. She did, he says, notably resist calls to restrict operating hours for the bars in town. And even if faith did play an unusually large role in her decision-making as mayor, it may have only reflected the continued rise of Evangelicalism in the valley, a growth that continues to this day.

Sounds like she was just responding to the will of the voters in that podunk town?

She just keeps getting stranger, but it's easy to see her appeal to the Theocrats.

"I Sarah Palin promise........to protect and defend that piece of paper."

"Thanks to Bush, the Republican Party is not strongly associated with intellectualism."

Oh, I can tell that this is a real "news" article just by the first sentence!!!!!!!

"The People for the American Way have issued a statement condemning Palin's actions and demanding an explanation from her: People can disagree about a lot of things, but censorship is completely beyond the pale."

Well look no farther than presidential hopeful Barak Obama and his attempts to ban articles, however factual, from making him look bad.

Oh and let's not mention the librarian was anti-Palin. There are always 2 sides to a story. What books were 'asked to be banned'? What audience were they to be banned from? Small, impressionable children? Why, that shouldn't matter. Any child under the age of ten should be able to read "My Dad Gives the Best BJ's".

"Sounds like she was just responding to the will of the voters in that podunk town?"

Rob, the Constitution applies even in Podunkville.

Thank god nobody has called her Dickless Dick Cheney yet.

"She just keeps getting stranger, but it's easy to see her appeal to the Theocrats."

Yes, the evilgelicals are all excited about the bone(r) McCain threw their way.

"Thank god nobody has called her Dickless Dick Cheney yet"

She is a better hunter than he is.

"Sounds like she was just responding to the will of the voters in that podunk town?"

How does that make it any more acceptable?

KangarooBowelMovement has never even been inside a library and thinks he can comment on this thread?

"Sounds like she was just responding to the will of the voters in that podunk town?"

This country was founded in such a way as to protect people from the tyranny of the majority - especially where religious beliefs are concerned.

HAHAHAHAH...Keep it coming lefties, you got all you're media working overtime. The independence party thing was already "corrected' by your beloved "Pravda" I mean the New York Times. And AlterNet? WTF is that? The more you guys run this stuff out and it is knocked down the goofier and more hateful you look. Just like with Kerry, you and hollywood will get McCain elected...SWEET..Keep it up..And as you do, look in the mirror and ask yourself..."WTF is wrong with me?

Books get banned and challenged a lot... Hell the ALA even dedicates a whole week to exploring and promoting the ones that are...

en.wikipedia.org

I don't see the point in ever banning a book... much like just not watching a TV show or listening to a radio broadcast you don't like... don't read a book you find offensive either.

But it seems there is a channel for removing books from libraries and she was reaciting to the will of her constituants.

The same Time article goes on to say that she didn't let her faith get in the way of doing things for her community.

Nor has Palin made social issues the cornerstone of her governorship. When a parental consent law was struck down by Alaska's highest court in 2007, Palin called the decision "outrageous" but refused calls from conservatives to remedy the defeat by introducing antiabortion legislation in a session that was supposed to be about drilling rights.

McCain campaign: We don't need no stinkin' issues...

McCain Manager: 'This Election is Not About Issues'

UPDATE, 6:18 pm: In reaction to Rick Davis' comments about the election not being about issues, Barack Obama campaign manager David Plouffe released the following statement: "We appreciate Senator McCain's campaign manager finally admitting that his campaign is not in fact about the issues the American people care about, which is exactly the kind of cynical old politics people are ready to change."

ORIGINAL POST

Rick Davis, campaign manager for John McCain's presidential bid, insisted that the presidential race will be decided more over personalities than issues during an interview with Post editors this morning.

"This election is not about issues," said Davis. "This election is about a composite view of what people take away from these candidates."

"ABOUT SARAH PALIN

"I have known Sarah since 1992. . . . It is . . . almost scary how well she can keep a secret. She is savvy. She doesn't take positions; she just "puts things out there" and if they prove to be popular, then she takes credit. . . . During her mayoral administration most of the actual work of running this small city was turned over to an administrator. She had been pushed to hire this administrator by party power-brokers after she had gotten herself into some trouble over precipitous firings which had given rise to a recall campaign.

"During her 6 years as Mayor, she increased . . . expenditures by over 33%. During those same 6 years . . . taxes collected by the City increased by 38%. . . . She reduced progressive property taxes and increased a regressive sales tax which taxed even food. The tax cuts that she promoted benefited large corporate property owners way more than they benefited residents.

"She inherited a city with zero debt, but left it with indebtedness of over $22 million. $15m-plus for construction of a multi-use sports complex which she rushed through to build on a piece of property that the City didn't even have clear title to, that was still in litigation 7 yrs later--to the delight of the lawyers involved! . . . While Mayor, City Hall was extensively remodeled and her office redecorated more than once.

"She's not very tolerant of divergent opinions or open to outside ideas or compromise. As Mayor, she fought ideas that weren't generated by her or her staff. Ideas weren't evaluated on their merits, but on the basis of who proposed them. . . . People who fought her attempt to oust the Librarian are on her enemies list to this day.

"Sarah complained about the "old boy's club" when she first ran for Mayor, so what did she bring Wasilla? A new set of "old boys". Palin fired most of the experienced staff she inherited. At the City and as Governor she hired or elevated new, inexperienced, obscure people, creating a staff totally dependent on her for their jobs and eternally grateful and fiercely loyal--loyal to the point of abusing their power to further her personal agenda

"She has bitten the hand of every person who extended theirs to her in help. Fear of retribution has kept all of these people from saying anything publicly about her. . . . The State party leaders hate her because she has bit them in the back and humiliated them. Other members of the party object to her self-description as a fiscal conservative. . . . Around Wasilla . . . call her "Sarah Barracuda" because of her unbridled ambition and predatory ruthlessness. . . . (T)here's a lot of people who have underestimated her and are regretting it.

"CLAIM VS FACT . . . *"Experienced": Some high schools have more students than Wasilla has residents. Many cities have more residents than the state of Alaska. No legislative experience other than City Council. Little hands-on supervisory or managerial experience; needed help of a city administrator to run town of about 5,000. . . . *gutsy: absolutely! *open & transparent: ??? Good at keeping secrets. Not good at explaining actions. *"a Greenie": no. Turned Wasilla into a wasteland of big box stores and disconnected parking lots. Is pro-drilling off-shore and in ANWR. . . . *pro-tax relief: Lowered taxes for businesses, increased tax burden on residents *pro-small government: No. Oversaw greatest expansion of city government in Wasilla's history."

Also, if she read more books she might learn that at 43 years old and having (4) children already and having a full time demanding job as Governor of the state of Alaska that you don't let your husband screw you without a rubber on.

Odds that Palin WON'T be McCain's VP nominee by Election Day -- down to 8:1, They were 20:1 last week. The political days of anti-intellectual, back-biting Palin may be numbered. www.drudge.com

Shades of McGovern & Eagleton!

That's right Mr. Davis,

In our duopoly we are given a choice between two different personalities who obey the same Oligarchy. Elections serve to placate the public while the rich go on robbing everyone blind. Compound interest is always the fallback position. It guarantees a future for the Ford & Rockerfeller Foundations as well as the Mormon Church.

Only disaster can bring a leader out of their predetermined character role. Unless its Shrub, nothing phases him.

"Should libraries carry porn?

Absolutely. It should be displayed prominently right next to Weekly Reader and the Little House books.

If she has no problem with the idea ridding the library of some books with the evangelical definition of offensive language, she probably also wouldn't let a pesky little thing like the constitution get in her way. It should be fascinating to watch her speech at the Theocratic Party convention, tonight.

Big guy, I read the whole thing... its a week dedicated to books that have been banned or deemed contraversial and advocates increased freedoms in libraries and bookstores and such... what's the problem?

I was just pointing out to Danni that books do get banned from time to time, so her consititution comment didn't really fit.

I have to wonder....did the McCain camp even try vetting her before naming her as running mate?

#8 | Posted by Kinger at 2008-09-03 02:49 PM

Try "Vetting" or try "Bedding" like he did Cindy for her Millions.

Is the librarian still employed? Were the books, in fact, banned?

Maybe the conversation went like this.

"Hi, Barb, this is Sarah."

"Oh! Hi Sarah!"

"Look, a question came up in the council meeting yesterday about wanting certain books banned from the library. How does one go about that?"

"Well, I don't really know. It doesn't seem right, to ban books. Do I have any say about it?"

"I don't know. I mean, if it came down to it, I could probably have you fired if we decided to do it, and you refused. Don't worry about any of that, though--I just told them I would review the procedure, and get back to them."

"Oh."

* * * *

No books were banned. The librarian still has a job. But Time had an article to write, and magazines to sell, and now we're on a 'blog, discussing ANOTHER 'blog.

So, keep trying.

If you think McCain didn't "vet" Sarah thoroughly then check out this video.

If this is true and has legs, Palin has just fucked McCain. If the books were pornographic, one could make the case that she has the right to ask that books be prohibited from a public library. Also, If she threaten to fire a librarian that is another reason she just screwed McCain.

I just heard about 10 minutes ago that books she wnated to ban included The Wizard of Oz and Huckleberry Finn. If this is true, McCain has to ask this right wing nympho to go

Wasilla keeps librarian, but police chief is out (2/1/1997)

Reached at home, Stambaugh said he still doesn't understand why he's been fired. ''There never was an appropriate response,'' he said. ''How did we not support the administration?''

Now he's talking to an attorney. While both Stambaugh and Emmons serve at the mayor's pleasure, Stambaugh said he has a contract that prohibits the city from firing him without cause.

Both Stambaugh and Emmons publicly supported Palin's opponent, long-time mayor John Stein during the campaign last fall. When she was elected, Palin questioned their loyalty and initially asked for their resignations. But Stambaugh said he thought any questions had been resolved.

thinkprogress.org

The Washington Posts Matthew Mosk reports that Sarah Palin began building clout in her states political circles in part by serving as a director of an independent political group organized by the now embattled Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens:

Palins name is listed on 2003 incorporation papers of the Ted Stevens Excellence in Public Service, Inc.,-- a 527 group that could raise unlimited funds from corporate donors. The group was designed to serve as a political boot camp for Republican women in the state. She served as one of three directors until June 2005, when her name was replaced on state filings.

Last October on Fox News Sunday, John McCain said, The 527s need to be eliminated.--

Hahahahahaha. Oh the story with this dumb (c)hick gets better and better every day. I can see she has REAL experience!

It should be pretty obvious that the strategic choice was important, vetting....not so much.

I expect to see her in a college stripper video anyday now.

digbysblog.blogspot.com

The members of the Council for National Policy are the hidden hand behind McCain's Palin pick. With her selection, the Republican nominee is suddenly -- and unexpectedly -- assured of the support of a movement that once opposed his candidacy with all its might. Case in point: while Dobson once said he could "never" vote for McCain, he issued a statement last week hailing Palin as an "outstanding" choice. If Dobson's enthusiasm for Palin is any indication, he may soon emerge from his bunker in Colorado Springs to endorse McCain, providing the Republican nominee with the grassroots support of the Christian right's single most influential figure.

Last October on Fox News Sunday, John McCain said, The 527s need to be eliminated.--

Palin, a staunch supporter of the National Rifle Association, was unhappy that her police chief had spoken against a state bill to ease restrictions on Alaskans who carried concealed weapons, he said

Stambaugh said he did not regret speaking out against legislation that would make it possible to carry concealed weapons into domestic-violence shelters and other public buildings.

"It was an enormous common-sense issue," Stambaugh said. "I thought it [the bill] was just nuts."

It was books that someone had complained about that had "inappropriate" language in. What specific titles I don't know.

Clearly this woman is an idealogue and is the reason why she was selected to run for VP.

"If the English language was good enough for the Bible, it's good enough for me"

Ma Ferguson beat her to it.

I am just skeptical of info from a former mayor that she wumped.

lol

"So then under that rationale you agree with testing out your taser on 10 year old boys."

Nobody complained about that when it happened. Which means none of them cared that much. Nobody gets credit for bringing it up years later during an ugly divorce.

Plus I believe the kid was 11, he asked to feel what it was like and the taser was on the test setting. So what's the big deal? The kid learned a cheap lesson about letting curiousity get the better of you. When I was eight I asked to have tooth filled without novacaine. So the dentist obliged and it hurt like hell. The doc should have known better but I didn't blame him for it, although I did learn to hate that son of a bitch later.

"Sounds like she was just responding to the will of the voters in that podunk town?"

I am so sick of hearing about "the will of the people". We have a Constitution that provides a legal framework upon which this country is built. We have a Bill of Rights. We have (well, we're supposed to have) separation of church and state. If anyone - or any group - finds these things incompatible with their own personal "will", let them move to some other country where laws are different.

You want a country where the laws are different every regime change, I suggest Uganda.

Stein, who made a failed comeback bid in 1999, declined to speak for this story. ....

For Palin, her landslide re-election in 1999 answered the critics. It was the one election where her slogan changed from "new ideas" to "stay the course."

You know, I've asked this question on other threads (never been answered) but it applies here as well. Is this REALLY and TRULY the BEST the repulsicans could do in selecting a vice-presidential candidate? Even if they had narrowed their requirements to ONLY women - couldn't they have found someone who was actually qualified for the position? What about - oh- Kay Bailey Hutchinson, Olympia Snowe or even Condileeza Rice? There have to be other, intelligent and qualified women who could have been selected and who were NOT the nutjobs this woman appears to be!

My gosh - if half the stuff discovered about her so far had been discovered about a Dem VP pick the rightie tighties here and everywhere else would have been frothing at the mouth! Come on! Picture a Democratic VP candidate appearing on the stage to accept his or her nomination - along with a pregnant, unmarried teenage daughter and the daughter's boyfriend! Or alternately, a Dem VP candidate appearing on stage to accept the nomination along with a teenage son who had impregnanted a teenage girl - and the pregnant girl standing proudly beside him. You guys would be screaming about the moral decay of the Democratic party and for his OR her head on a pike! Be honest here! This is just too much! LOL!

"Two months ago I didn't even have an opinion on this election."

Perhaps you never specifically stated you preference but it was pretty obvious. You support the Bush Tax Cuts for the Rich, McCain supports them, not very hard to figure who you would be voting for.

But hey, in your world, government isn't big enough, and two trillion eight hundred billion dollars in federal spending isn't nearly what we need. I disagree. And that's what elections are for.

Maybe we can raise taxes on everyone, and we can all get rich. Or something.

LOL!

Actually, we don't really know that.

Here's what we do know. The girl is the daughter of a Republican, so it's perfectly okay for her to be splashed across 4 articles of the front page of the New York Times. And that the same paper would feature editorials from people usually sympathetic to women's rights, claiming that a mother has no place in politics--in fact, that she should quit work entirely to take care of her children.

You've come a long way, baby. I've been trying to find editorials calling for Michelle Obama to quit her job at the hospital, so she can stay home and raise her two young daughters. So far, nada. Go figure that out.

The longer this is in the news, the more it hurts Obama. After all, he's the only one on the ticket whose 17 year-old mother was impregnated by a 24 year-old married graduate student from Kenya. How d'ya like them apples?

"I'm sorry, but I just don't get why they are parading the girl and the boyfriend around."

Yeah, kinda knocks that whole "private family matter" thing down, doesn't it?

Your point about Rethug faux outrage over Clinton's hummer is well made. It's "any port in a storm" with these folks, every time; they'll use anything they can to get voters worked up, then wjhen they're caught doing something similar, everyone's supposed to overlook it.

What I cannot figure out is that so far, it's working the way they want it to. You'd think anyone with an I.Q. over 8 would see the difference between what they say and what they do.

we all know that Dems AND Reps try to ban books ALL the time.

can you support that statement?

Books do get banned all the time.

It is very difficult to determine the Political affiliation of those initiating the bans. However, it is easy to see that most are parents of Evangelical orientation.

Here is a recent list from Amazon of banned books.

Looks like some interesting reading!

RIR:

As you yourself have pointed out any number of times in reference to Hillary Clinton, being First Lady isn't a job. There are some duties and responsibilities that tradition has placed upon First Ladies, but considering that the First Lady has a secretarial staff, household staff, and every other resource of the White House but the red phone at her disposal, it should be possible for Michelle Obama to squeeze out enough time to give her daughters a little attention. Even if Michelle's time gets a little tight from time to time, neither of her daughters is a baby in arms with special needs.

What Caribou Barbie proposes to do is to take on the second most responsible job in the land, with the ever-present possibility that the Apoplectic in Chief will buy the farm, thereby leapfrogging her into the top slot. Neither option will leave her a whole bunch of family time, which is going to be a little rough on a Downs baby.

Stop talking out of both sides of your mouth.

I should have said Evangelical or Fundamental Religious Orientation. Don't want to lay ALL the blame on the Evangelicals though they do seem make most of the "noise".

It has been a long time since children have been been given any shit about the parental actions that led to their births.

Of course, in your case, we might be willing to make an exception.

Doesn't mean the ALA doesn't have that Banned Books Week and that books haven't been banned or challenged before...

So you bitch about other peoples links ( as in not linking to the Time story) but it's fine for you t link to a page that has a disclaimer front and center that it might not be factual?

Why am I not surprised?

I guess if you take the individual issues, two that I believe would be benchmarks showing whether youre a hard-core Republican conservative or not, would be: Im a lifetime member of the N.R.A.but this is Alaska, who isnt?and I am pro-life, absolutely.-- She continued, I guess that puts me in a box of being hard-core Republican.--
Sarah Palin - New Yorker Interview

When did being an NRA member and being pro-life become the major "benchmark" issues for being labeled a Republican? Neither of those things have ANYTHING to do with actually being "conservative" either.

What the hell happened to the belief of smaller government? What the hell happened to the belief of personal freedom and privacy? What the hell happened to less taxes and fiscal responsibility? What the hell happened to national security? And more than the belief what the hell happened to actually following through on ANY of those issues! Seriously... can anyone answer that without insult or sarcasm?

The Republican party no longer exists as it is written about in our history books. It's now a party of corporate lemmings and Jesus freaks. Maybe they should take off their Republican hats.

And before one of you neo-cons gets in the typical response, no... the Democrats are not much better, if at all.

DONNERBOY that list is mostly books that have been "challenged" for use in public schools. It is not a list of books actually banned from public libraries.

FREE BRISTOL PALIN!!!

No one is giving Bristol (or Barack) any shit on how they come to be here.

Shit should be dumped on Sarah Palin, who opposed any education or books that might have kept Bristol non-pregnant, who now forces the girl into a teen marriage that will ruin TWO lives. herm

The link is busted... it looks like some middle school HTML project so I suspect the server is toast from many hits, but if she did in fact call for banning books, then that is bad. Unless it was "The Paucity of Hope".

Read it and weep righties:

It's over."

Agreed, but how can they possibly spin this nut jobs views on banning books like the Wizard of Oz, seceding from the union, criminilizing birth control and campaigning with Ted Stevens and Don Young after they have been indicted.

oops, I forgot, ITS CLINTON'S FAULT

I'm reading from Palin keeps an enemy's list. "Enemy's List"---Holy Nixon, Batman.

DONNERBOY that list is mostly books that have been "challenged" for use in public schools. It is not a list of books actually banned from public libraries.

yeah they were not all banned I couldn't find a recent list of Banned books but it was amazing to learn how many books are still being banned and challenged. I was happy to see some books I had read on that list!

And thanks for keeping me "honest".

"How d'ya like them apples?"

Have I been one of the people who has said a word about the Palins personal situation? No, I don't think so. I have commented on Sarah Palin's notable lack of judgement when flying 12 hours home to deliver her child but all remarks I made on that score came from my personal experiences and the fact that I KNOW she risked serious infections to both herself and her unborn child. I have not said a word about her daughter. But hey - what kind of a parent deliberately exposes their child to this kind of attention? All I can do is compare it to what I know personally and personally, there is no way in the world I would expose any of my family to that kind of public scrutiny. Does that mean Sarah Palin is a bad mother? I did not say that. People are free to draw their own conclusions.

..and the hits just...keep...on...coming!

hey here is another good one ...

When politicians make statements in favor of "teaching the controversy", they appeal to Science's emphasis on considering of multiple explanations in light of the available evidence, but their obsession with evolutionary theory reveals that their true agenda is not to encourage critical thinking among students. Take for example the platform of Palin's Republican Party of Alaska which states We support giving Creation Science equal representation with other theories of the origin of life. If evolution is taught, it should be presented as only a theory.--

from- Does Sarah Palin believe in evolution?

"Q: The education section of the Republican Party of Alaskas platform states We support giving Creation Science equal representation with other theories of the origin of life. If evolution is taught, it should be presented as only a theory.-- Do you support this position? Why?

A: I support this plank in the Republican Partys platform. I believe society can have healthy debates on scientific theories, so equal representation of creation and evolution shouldnt be an offense."
