Our burgeoning world populations have so taxed arable land and water resources that we are living on the fringe of survivability without much of a buffer.
There are measures such as development of crops that thrive in extreme water deprived or saline water, hotter, or colder environments, and other efforts to ameliorate the situation.
But eventually, there will be a revision of our ethical standards, which are quite malleable, and efforts to control populations will make current Chinese efforts seem mild. Human life will be devalued, and "children of a lesser god," the impaired, will be destroyed as they often are now in a fetal stage, abortion will be mandated, number of offspring will be limited, and possibly also limited to people with certain attributes. Beware you older people, necessity may compel utilization of the pragmatic practices of the Inuits, who sent their elderly off to die drifting on ice floes, when food supplies became insufficient to support the entire community. Euthanasia will be justified, and the elderly dispatched, probably beginning with the improvident elderly. When these effots don't suffice, there'll be a move to eliminate less desirable groups. And then, who knows. This rational progression is, of course, if civil order is maintained during the course of worldwide starvation. Or the lines may be drawn nationally. The nuclear powers may be those that survive limiting polpulatioon survival on a national basis.
It augurs ill.
